●This assignment is due on the
second day of school. Points
will be deducted for late
assignments - 15 points per day
Step 1: Create an Image and
caption
Draw, cut-out, or print a picture to
create an image that captures the story.
●
The image must be of
you doing something
connected with the the
newspaper article and
the central idea of the
book.
●
Step 2: Make sure to
have a catchy Headline
and a byline
Your headline MUST reflect the
central idea/theme of the story you
are writing.
If you do not know what a byline is,
please research to find out.
Step 3: Your news story
●
MUST BE AT LEAST 500 WORDS.
● Think about memories Jonas received and how
those memories encouraged him to take action.
● For your story you will need to interview a
family member. Possible topics to discuss in
your interview may include family life,
childhood/play time, work life, values, and
culture. You will be looking for what events
shaped his or her life. Include at least four
different events or memories from your
interview that detail how that memory
impacted the family member and how the
event encouraged them to take action or make
a change in his or her life.
Step 4: Include in your
interview:
Ask at least four thought
provoking, open-ended questions.
●Provide four thought provoking
answers. Answers should be indepth and include textual
evidence from the book - at least
three sentences in length.
●
Questions must relate to the
image and story you are
writing.
●
Step 5: REMEMBER!!!!
MAKE MEANINGFUL
CONNECTIONS TO THE
TEXT: ●In your story make a connection
to the central idea
or theme reflected in the book.
Remember to include textual
evidence (quotes from the book) for
the connections. All quotes should
be cited with author’s last name and
the page #. (Lowry 25)

When someone sees
your front page

they should be
interested and want
to read your article.

Guidelines
●Must be colorful and neat and in blue
or black ink
●Article must be at least 500 words.
●No lined paper 8 ½ x 11 or 11 x 17 paper.
●Use color pens, pencils, computer
clip-art, photos, pictures from
magazine, construction paper, etc.
●Be creative, even unusual

●1 Central Image with a caption - may be
a photo or drawing - must fit with the story
●Interview: Must include
4 Thought-Provoking Questions with
answers (Must be open-ended
questions - not yes or no, include
textual evidence from the book, at least
three sentences per answer)
REQUIREMENTS (CONTINUED):
●AT
LEAST 500 WORDS - you
may write more if you choose
●Your Newspaper Front Page may
be created on the computer OR by
hand - if created on paper, ALL
writing must be printed, legible and
in blue/black ink
Quality of work, creativity, and neatness
are very important. Your work should
be exemplary - points will be deducted
for work that is not creative or neat.
