School Information

School Information
Welcome From The Headteacher – September 2009
The school is proud of its superb building and state-of-the-art facilities. There are over 1340 students on roll,
with a large and dynamic sixth form of 350. The school is resourced to a high standard and has a highly qualified
and dedicated staff. South Bromsgrove High School is a County, co-educational, comprehensive secondary school.
We strive to make the school a challenging and caring community in which the individual student is expected to
develop his/her potential to the full. High standards of work, appearance and behaviour are required at all times.
The school has a number of national awards. South Bromsgrove High School (SBHS) holds the Successful Schools
Project award, the Investor in People award, is one of the lead participants in the Duke of Edinburgh's award and
is listed in the "Good State School " guide. Naturally we are very honoured by these accolades and feel extremely
proud of the school's academic, sporting and cultural achievements. Please come and see us, we would be pleased
to show you around.
A Welcome to New Students
Entering a new school is a big step in the life of any young person and the increasing opportunities and extended
facilities available will be an exciting prospect. We strive for a partnership in learning – including staff, parents and
students. We aim to be a caring and happy school which strives for the highest standards, whether it be for
academic excellence, for concern and care for each pupil as an individual, or for proper order and discipline.
Students who join us should be aware of the school’s reputation for strong traditions of hard work and success.
Whether it be in the classroom or the laboratory, in the Resource Centre or the technology centre, on the
games field or involved in social or extra-curricular activity, we hope that our new students will likewise feel a
proper sense of fulfillment. This will give increasing confidence and pleasure in all aspects of school life, constantly
reinforced by success.

Headteacher
Southern Edge
In today’s fast moving and competitive world of industry we believe at South Bromsgrove it
is important to develop creativity in our students, both inside the classroom by offering
challenging tasks and opportunities for autonomy, self directed learning and critical thinking
and also through our curricular and extracurricular Arts programme. Our extensive and
excellent provision has been recognised by three times being awarded Artsmark Gold.
Music
Music plays an important part in the life of the school and within our new build we have a
new Music Technology Centre of which we are very proud.
Instrumental tuition is offered by visiting teachers and the school runs many extra curricular
musical opportunities such as choirs, orchestra, dance band, brass band, string ensemble,
recorder group and rock band.
Regular music concerts take place allowing students opportunities to perform in front of the
community and informal concerts are held on a regular basis.
Drama
The superb facilities in the school have been put to excellent use in annual productions
ranging from Romeo and Juliet and Amadeus to musicals such as Cabaret and Grease. These
performances have involved students in after school activities for much of the school year
and given opportunities for experts in lighting, technical effects, stage management,
wardrobe and set design.
Dance
Dance takes place as part of the PE curriculum. There are also many opportunities to
develop skills in this area through the dance club which performs at local and county
festivals and at the very successful school dance evening at which students perform dances
ranging from ballet to line dancing. Cheer Leading has become a very popular form of dance
and catches the imagination of many of our students.
Eisteddfod
The annual Eisteddfod (introduced in 1996) is a superb celebration of student involvement
in Music, Drama and Sport. It encourages participation from some 500+ students. It is
competitive on a House basis and there is an appreciation of every contribution. It
culminates in public performances over two evenings ...not to be missed!
Trips and Visits
Trips and visits enhance the learning experience in many curriculum areas such as annual
foreign exchange visits to France and Germany, a music trip to countries such as Poland,
Hungary, The Czech Republic and Italy. Annual ski and snowboarding trips are organised
and well supported and recently we had a sport tour to Ireland. Artists have also visited the
Tate Gallery in Cornwall to work amongst the experts.
The school is committed to providing free education for all students and to offering
activities during normal teaching time which are available to students regardless of the
parents’ ability to pay. Full guidance is contained in section 457 of the Education Act 1996
Duke of Edinburgh Award
The Award scheme at bronze, silver and gold is extremely popular at South. In excess of
5,000 Awards with more than 500 at Gold have been achieved over the past fifteen years or
so.
Annual camp in Wales is something that many students look forward to and remember
when they have moved on from South.
Huge numbers of students are engaged with the Award and we are thankful to the entire
staff for voluntary contributions to this extra part of school life.
Home School Community
The success of South is based on excellent teaching, hard working students and supportive parents.
We also strive to be at the heart of the community.
Home School Partnership
For students to achieve success in school we believe it is essential that parents, students and the
school work together.
Each student is given an organiser which serves as a homework diary and planner . This also contains
the parent partnership agreement and acts as a two- way means of communication.
We believe we have an innovative parent consultation system. Parents can elect to see teachers at
consultation sessions held each half term . This allows students, parents and teachers to target
particular subject areas where students may need further support or guidance. An annual review day
is held each Spring to provide an opportunity for students and parents to meet with their child’s
tutor to discuss overall progress and set personal targets.
Each term parents are given a report of their son or daughter’s progress based on attainment and
effort . Students will also be set targets based on teacher assessment and a sophisticated tracking
process of student potential. Parents will receive an annual report which also relates to the student’s
personal and social development and extra curricular involvement.
Parents are encouraged to contact the school at any time if they have a problem or query, in the
first place through their son or daughter’s tutor.
Throughout the year a number of informal , interactive evenings are held to help parents support
students with homework, revision, learning strategies , choosing Key stage 4 options and provision
at post 16.
The Governors
The Governing Body at South plays an important role in ensuring the best possible education for
your sons and daughters. The governors are drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds- parents,
teachers, support staff, local business people and LEA representatives. These volunteers are either
elected or appointed to work closely with the Headteacher and staff to support and oversee their
work.
The Parents Group
South has a committed parents group who meet regularly to discuss fund raising opportunities. They
have also formed a consultation group to give advice to the school on wider education issues. We
are presently reforming the Parents group and Mr Farr (Deputy Head) would welcome any
willingness from parents to get involved.
The Community
The school has forged strong links with the local community and beyond and this has been
recognised in the awarding of the Schools Curriculum Award 2000 and Technology College Status.
The school has partnerships with a number of local businesses through technology college status and
the careers and work experience programme has led to excellent links with local employers
businesses and services. Close links exist with our pyramid schools, special schools , Bromsgrove
Private School and North East Worcestershire and other local colleges.
The school also offers a facility for extensive community use for local arts events, meetings and a
sports venue. The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme which thrives in the school has also involved
strong links with such organisations as the Police and St. Johns Ambulance , local community centres
, rest homes, hospitals, charity shops, and children’s nurseries. Extensive use is also made of local
sports and leisure facilities , such as Upton Warren Sailing Centre, the Ryland Centre and Dolphin
Centre, both inside and outside the curriculum.
All members of the School are expected to behave in a manner which will allow the work of
the School to proceed smoothly and which will encourage all to achieve their potential in
educational and social aspects of their development.
A CODE OF CONDUCT
A large and varied community can best function in an atmosphere of good order. This
comes from good organisation, mutual understanding and respect aimed at ensuring the
welfare and well-being of all members of the organisation. The School believes that these
conditions are best achieved when all members' positive attitudes are regularly praised and
appropriately rewarded.
A very high standard is expected of all students who must exercise self-discipline in behaving
sensibly and showing courtesy and consideration to all other members of the school. The
School aims to enhance self-esteem and to develop self-discipline rather than to apply
control or repression.
All parents have a responsibility with regard to the attendance of their children and the
behaviour of their children both at School and on journeys to and from School. If a student
is unsuccessful in exercising such self-discipline, resulting in unacceptable behaviour,
sanctions may be imposed as a corrective measure. In appropriate cases parents will be
contacted either to keep them informed or to seek further support. We ask all parents to
recognise their influence and responsibility in helping the School to develop this selfdiscipline in their sons and daughters.
From the general Code of Conduct above, these expectations follow:
All pupils will attend school regularly and punctually and will wear full correct school
uniform neatly.
In the classroom all pupils are expected to:• arrive on time, prepared for the lesson, with the equipment and homework needed
• settle quickly to work and follow the instructions of the teacher
• co-operate in such a way that the lesson planned by the teacher can proceed smoothly
• respect all others in the classroom, their work and their property
• complete all tasks given to the best of their ability
Outside the classroom all pupils are expected to:• remain on the School premises unless they have special permission
• use the areas made available to them in a sensible way, following any rules laid down for
their use
• respect the environment and avoid any action which would be to the detriment of the
buildings or School grounds
• behave in such a way in School, and to and from School, as to be a credit to the School at
all times.
The following paragraph is taken from a Department for Education publication on School
Attendance.
THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN PARENTS AND SCHOOLS
Parental responsibility extends beyond securing regular school attendance. Parents should
ensure that their children arrive at school on time, properly attired and in a condition to
learn. Furthermore, they need to see themselves as partners with schools in the education
of their children. This means instilling in their children a respect for education - and for
those who deliver it - and ensuring that pupils complete homework on time. Parents should
also impress upon their children the need to observe schools' codes of conduct and
reinforce this through discipline in the home.

School Special Education Needs (SEN) Policy
At South we believe that all students should achieve their potential and have
access to the support and enrichment, which allows them to do this.
Transitions Arrangements
Regular meetings are held with feeder middle schools concerning SEN issues and students’
needs. Teaching and support staff are issued with a copy of the new special needs database
at the start of the Autumn Term.
Individual Education Plans are available to all colleagues via the school intranet system.
These outline differentiation strategies, curriculum enrichment activities, support offered in
lessons or via discreet withdrawal and student targets. Information and targets can be
regularly updated and all staff can access this via the laptop programme.
Code Of Practice
The school now operates the new code of practice stages, which are as follows:
Action – School offers differentiation strategies and support.
Action Plus – Outside agencies and the school are involved in offering appropriate support.
Statement of Special Educational Needs – Local Authority offers and funds appropriate
support and resources to meet students’ needs.
Students with a Statement of Special Educational Needs
Students with statements are encouraged to follow a broad and balanced curriculum
alongside other students. Support and curriculum enrichment is carefully planned and
resources are used to support students so they are able to fulfil their potential.
Teaching Assistants are developing specific areas of expertise and attend appropriate
training opportunities.
Students with physical, sensory, medical and emotional needs are all offered the appropriate
level of support.
Annual Reviews are held for students during the appropriate term. Parents, students,
teaching assistants and appropriate outside agencies are invited to the review. Parents are
also invited to review their son or daughter’s progress at the many parent consultation
opportunities and at Annual Review Day.
Students on the Special Needs Register
The school has an SEN team of teachers with specific roles and our aim is to meet all
students’ needs as effectively as possible with the resources available to us.
At the present time the following support is offered to appropriate students in the school.
Movement and Listening programmes
Handwriting programmes
Discreet literacy support at Key Stage 3
Teaching Assistants working in lessons across the curriculum
Self esteem building activities such as sailing
Support in practical lessons for students with physical and sensory needs
Study skills support option at Key Stage 4
Vocational and alternative curriculum opportunities at Key Stage 4
Adult other than teacher mentoring scheme
Learning Support Centre for a range of needs
A range of alternative assessment opportunities such as Certificate of Achievement
and Unit Award schemes
Standard Attainment Test and external examination dispensations
All students on the SEN register are encouraged to participate in the extensive extra
curricular programme in the school.
