Ancestors of Gen. Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard
As the South's most experienced field general, Beauregard was sent to Charleston,
SC. Since the Yankees had twice missed mutually agreed deadlines to evacuate
Ft.Sumter in Charleston harbor, war had become a possibility. He was under
orders to take the fort by force, if the next withdrawal deadline was missed.
When the deadline neared, a Yankee fleet approached Sumter. at first spirits rose,
the Yankees were leaving. Then it was noticed that the ships rode low in the
water. They were bringing in supplies and reenforcements, not empty to
evacuate. On 12 Apr 1861, Beauregard reluctantly ordered the first shots of a war
that shoild never have been. Sumter surrendered the next day. Four years later,
after almost a million American's were killed, Robert E. Lee surrendered at
Appomatox. More Americans died in that war than all other wars from the
Revolution in 1776 to the War on Terror in 2009, combined.
Beauregard was transferred north after Sumter and won several battles in VA,
most notably Manasses Jct., VA aka Bull Run, thwarting the 1st Yankee invasion of
VA attempt. Jefferson Davis did not like Beauregard from their old association
before the War and replaced him as soon as possible with his 1st choice, Gen,
Robert E. Lee as commander of the Army of Northern VA. Davis kept Beauregard
in the "backwaters" of the war from that time forward.
Beauregard was called "Old Alphabet" by his troops, because "it took the whole
damn thing to spell his name." He was also called "Napoleon in Gray" by the
press.
The original family name was Toutant de Beauregard in France. The Louisiana
Creole family stressed just the Beauregard portion. General Beauregard was called
Gustave by family and friends, and often dropped the Pierre in correspondence.
