give financial tips to students

Sudbury, June 11 , 2007 – Two employees of Caisse populaire Lasalle facilitated
information workshops to high school students on different subjects related to the
financial domain. These workshops focused on the importance of having a budget, of
saving money and how to avoid fraud on the internet. More than 20 students of École
secondaire Macdonald-Cartier participated in these workshops.
Josée Ruddy, Team leader of Member Services, and Eric Pharand, an intern from Laurentian
University, visited this high school twice in order to enlighten students on subjects such as the
importance of planning retirement early and having good credit.
«Students need to know what the consequences are if they miss a payment and how that effects
their credit», says Mrs. Ruddy. «We also emphasized the importance of having a budget and how
that can help them maintain control of their financial situation. We were pleased that the students
we facilitated had many questions and that our workshop had a good level of interaction and
participation.»
Both employees of Caisse populaire Lasalle also gave students tips on how to save money, how
to avoid purchasing as a result of emotions, and how to review the balance of one’s account. «If
an adolescent foresees making a big purchase, they should compare prices. When buying
clothes, one should question themselves on the consequence of buying brand names», added
Mrs. Ruddy.
She also points out that her workshop dealt with Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs)
and the necessity to think ahead. «We even spoke about Internet fraud because we know that
youth are very active on the web and are therefore very susceptible to fraud», said Mrs. Ruddy.
