Residents Provide Valuable Insight
on Life at Glen Arden
What better way to get the inside scoop on a community
than talking to the residents who live there? That’s just what
a group of prospective Glen Arden residents did on October
1 when they attended a discussion hosted by Glen Arden.
During the afternoon’s event which included bistro-style
desserts, coffee and tea, the attendees heard from five current
Glen Arden residents about their personal experiences, and
why Glen Arden is such a great place to live.
“When we retired, it suddenly occurred to us that we were
alone,” said Glen Arden resident Clare Madigan. “Suddenly,
I had some health problems. I had my husband to help, but in
due time he passed away. One day, a friend said to me, ‘Why
don’t you consider Glen Arden?’”
The Boyles’ home was just getting to be too big for them
to manage.“We wanted to remain in Goshen, where we’ve
always lived,” said Helen Marie Boyle. “All my children and
grandchildren live here. I just love it here.”
Maureen Torelli, Glen Arden vice president and executive
director, speaks to prospective residents as the panelists await
their turn to speak.
Maureen Torelli, Glen Arden vice president and executive director, thanks the five Glen Arden residents who took part in the
Oct. 1 program for prospective residents.
Seated: Clare Madigan, left, Jody Tournoux and Patrick Boyle.
Standing: Sibylle Reuschenbach, left, and Helen Marie Boyle.
Glen Arden, a continuing care retirement community,
offers seniors age 62 and older an active and independent
lifestyle, with a comprehensive program of independent living,
assisted living and skilled nursing all on one campus.
Madigan, who has lived at Glen Arden for the past two
years, loves her home. She told guests how she values the
availability of the vast array of amenities and services available
to residents, and why the transportation services are so
personally important to her. “I came here with a car,” she said.
“To give up a car after you’ve had it for a lifetime is a difficult
decision. I’m very comfortable to have a capable driver like
Ray, who takes us everywhere. I’m okay now without a car.”
Jody Tournoux, who has lived at Glen Arden for more
than 10 years, also spoke about the community’s amenities.
“The food is great,” said Tournoux, who also volunteers her
time in the gift shop. “I don’t have to do housework anymore
either. They come every two weeks. The housekeeping girls
are just wonderful. That’s the best thing here.”
Sibylle Reuschenbach has lived at Glen Arden for 18
years, and spoke glowingly about amenities. “I make lunch
a mealtime experience,” she said. “And, there are a lot of
exercise possibilities, like swimming. There are a lot of things
to keep us busy here.”
Reuschenbach also spoke eloquently about how Glen
Arden provides peace of mind for families. “There came a
time when we couldn’t be in our home anymore,” she said.
“My daughter tells me, ‘You don’t know what a relief it is
that you’re close by.’ If you want to make a decision, make it
before you’re too old to know what you really want. You’ll
be doing your family a favor.”
The newest residents to speak were Helen Marie and
Patrick Boyle, who just moved in this past April.
“There’s all kinds of services here,” said Helen Marie
Boyle, adding that their children were tremendously supportive
of their decision to move to Glen Arden. “Pharmacy, library,
they pick up and deliver. There’s also a bank. And I must tell
you, the service in the dining room is wonderful.”
Patrick Boyle spoke about the challenges of downsizing
after living in the same home for 50 years. But, he’s getting
used to his new environment and reinforced it was the best
decision they could have made. “I have enjoyed it very much,”
he added.
The five panelists spent time fielding questions from
guests, focusing on food, transportation, pets, storage, crafts,
onsite services, family issues and even family involvement in
the decision making process to relocate to Glen Arden. But
one common theme consistently emerged: They’re all happy
they made the decision to move to this independent living
community. “I’m content here,” said Madigan. “I feel safe
and protected. I’m glad I’m here. This is a fine community.”
