the newsletter of the W i n t e r 2 0 07 volume 7 issue 1 Healdsburg Jazz Festival 2007 Festival Sponsors Dig Deeper into Jazz Jazz Appreciation Course Starts in Healdsburg W hat is this “jazz” thing all about, anyway? Though we all know what we like – and we like jazz! – most of us don’t know as much about it as we wish. Whether you’re a novice or a fan, if you dig jazz this is your chance to dig it deeper. Three fun, informative and inexpensive mid-week Jazz Appreciation classes will begin February 28 at the Raven Film Center. The classes will mix live and recorded music with the expertise of the guest instructor to bring jazz history alive. official sponsors “Adult education has always been a missing component in the Healdsburg Jazz Festival,” said artistic director Jessica Felix as she announced a new grant from the Healdsburg Area Affiliate of the Community Foundation Sonoma County. The grant makes it possible to offer this three-part series on the history of jazz for area adults, extending the reach of the Festival’s Jazz Education Program out of the schools and into the community at large. “As always we strive to have the highest quality musicians and educators, and this class will keep in that tradition,” said Jessica. “I wanted not scholarly teachers, but passionate, articulate, and the most knowledge experts in their field.” The class dates are Feb. 28, March 28 and May 9. Tickets are just $10 each, or $25 for the series, halfprice for senior citizens (65 and older) and students. The classes will be held at the Raven Film Center (Theater 2) in Healdsburg, from 6:30-9:30 in the evening. The first course will be led by percussionist Ali Jackson, a featured member of the celebrated Wynton Marsalis Quintet. The next two sessions will bring back Dr. James Newton, one of the world’s top classical and jazz flute players who is familiar to Healdsburg jazz fans from earlier Festival appearances. business sponsors The series will begin with Jazz History and Styles (Feb. 28) with Ali Jackson leading participants in what he calls “a sensory voyage” from the deep South to the industrial Midwest to the New York City nightclub scene and the eventual world popularity of jazz. Special attention will be given to the many ethnic influences in jazz, from West Africa to Cuba and Puerto Rico and Brazil, which enrich the texture and resonance of the music. In The Music Making Process (March 28) James Newton will explore the essential concepts of interaction within a jazz ensemble. The class will discover in detail how a jazz group approaches the interpretation of a composition, and how improvisation is built from the composition itself. Recorded music on CDs and musical performances on DVDs, as well as Newton’s own performances with other guest musicians, will demonstrate the interplay that is central to jazz. James Newton will be the perfect teacher to take us into the third part of this series, Artists and Music of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival (May 9). For fans of the Festival, this one is a must: we’ll explore the very musicians we’ll be enjoying live at the Festival a short month later, beginning June 1. (See Director’s Letter, page 3, for some of this year’s headliners.) “The goal of this series is to bring all us closer to understanding the depth and history of an art form that has grown out of the American experience,” Jessica Felix explained. And, notes Jessica, “There are no grades. Everyone gets an A!” Take three giant steps toward jazz enjoyment with our first-ever Jazz Appreciation Series, starting the last day of February. Class 1, February 28: Jazz History and Jazz Styles Jazz Educator, Ali Jackson explores the origins of jazz music with his celebrated What is Jazz? A class, designed to make “America’s Classical Music” accessible to a wide audience. What is jazz? Where did jazz come from? Who are the true pioneers and innovators of jazz? If you or a friend have asked these questions, What is Jazz? will provide the answers. This lecture will take participants on a sensory voyage from the plantations of the late 1800s, to the booming industrial Midwest of the thirties to the New York City nightclub scene of the Be-Boppin’ fifties and beyond. Prepare for an exhilarating experience. Ali’s credits include Drum chair of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, music director for jazz educations programs at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis, band member in groups led by Wynton Marsalis and Joshua Redman. Class will use include audio (CD’s) and visual materials (DVD). Ali Jack son Class 2, March 28: The Music Making Process Dr. James Newton, internationally acclaimed musician, composer, educator and jazz historian, will introduce the class to the essential concepts of interaction within a jazz ensemble. The class will explore and examine examples of call-and-response, motific development, emotional shape, use of different areas of the beat to convey specific emotions, and the way these concepts evolved through the history of jazz. The class will also demonstrate how a jazz combo approaches the interpretation of a composition, and Newton will be joined by a rhythm section to illustrate these concepts. CDs, DVDs and live music will be used as part of this class. Class 3, May 9: Artists and Music of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival Also taught by Dr. James Newton, this class will give participants a more informed perspective on the bands appearing at the 2007 Healdsburg Jazz Festival. This approach is often used within the context of a classical music festival but rarely applied in the context of a jazz festival. The class will cover the stylistic practices of the artists and highlights of their careers, and explore the use of different size ensembles particularly as they relate to the jazz repertoire. I’m working harder than ever this year, since I believe the Festival should keep getting better – 2007 will mark the 9th year of our contribution to the cultural life of the North Bay, and I’m excited about the people we’re able to bring to our audience. Other names will be added, but you can look forward to seeing – and hearing – great musicians including George Cables with Gary Bartz and “Tain” Watts, Jim Hall and Dave Holland, Roy Hargrove, Roberta Gamberini, Charles Tolliver and Billy Harper, and a special New Orleans event with Delfeayo Marsalis and the Rebirth Brass Band. Festival favorites like Craig Handy and Billy Hart will join us too, and Julian Lage will be back in a duet with Taylor Eigsti. What a line-up! And there’ll be others announced soon. As we grow, we can thank several granting agencies for their support in 2007. These include the Healdsburg Affiliate of the Sonoma County Foundation (see page 1 of this newsletter), Performance Sonoma for underwriting a special fall concert, and the National Endowment for the Arts for their continued and valuable support.
