Message from the President
Serving as President of the Library Board of Trustees has been a labor of love and a great honor for me.
I loved being part of the many ways the Library keeps bringing the community together. Often it’s been
at a program in the McManus Room, which I remember and enjoy long after. And, of course, I’ll never
forget those days of the storm in March when we camped out together enjoying the light, and the
warmth — of both the heating system and each other’s company. Sometimes, it has been all of us working
hand in hand, as when we took a stand for restoring the Library’s budget in order to stay open on Sundays.
I loved crossing paths with folks from our community organizations such as the Green Village Initiative,
the Arts Center and the Historical Society, the Playhouse, Staples High School, and others. All of us
together at the Library for the endless array of activities and services we put on with those groups.
I loved and appreciated the added opportunities that gifts of all sizes, from individuals, businesses, and
certainly the Friends of the Library, make possible. Thanks to their generosity we enjoy our “Community Conversations,” which bring leaders from business and government to the Library for updates on
crucial issues. We also can use the LexisNexis database, and have BluRay DVDs and Wii games for the
whole family.
But what I have loved most has been preparing for the future. This year as we developed the Library’s
new Strategic Plan, community members spoke up about what the Library offers now and helped us
plan the Library of the future. As we move toward tomorrow, we will continue to come together at the
Library, at the heart of our vital, committed community.
Martha Aasen, President, Board of Trustees

It’s been a year noted for its numbers and letters.

Numbers tell the story of how Westport is breaking records for Library use. More people have library cards.
More people are coming to the Library, checking out materials,
attending programs, and getting answers to

their questions. The Children’s Summer Reading program broke records for both readers and books. The

weekend of March 13-16 is when 12,000 people literally found shelter from the storm here.

Clue: Vinyl that breaks
Not the long-playing kind,
but the statistics the Library
keeps. And unlike LPs —
be proud that you broke
them all! This year was
record-breaking starting
with the number of items
you borrowed, the number
of times you turned to
Library staff to answer
your questions, as well
as for the number of
programs you attended.
Each of you listed in this
report made it possible for
the Westport Public Library
to respond without missing
a beat during a time that
Library use soared.

Philanthropist’s gift
Ann Eyes was a special
member of the Westport
community, and after she
passed away, her husband
Ray, and their children,
wanted Ann’s verve for life
and love of science to be
remembered. With this in
mind, the Eyes family has
established the Ann Eyes
Endowment for a Science
and Exploration lecture
which will begin in 2011.

Clue:
Turns over a new leaf?
For eight years now,
WestportREADS has
brought town residents
together to read the same
book and reflect on it in a
wide variety of ways.
When The Housekeeper
and the Professor was
selected, residents Doug
and Patti Brill graciously
chose to share with the
community their personal
knowledge of the kind
of memory loss the book
describes, which Doug has
experienced. This book
captured the hearts and
minds of thousands of
Westporters thanks to
the generosity of Jerry A.
Tishman, the 2010 sponsor.

Channel subject
During March, when most
of Westport had no power
for days, over 12,000 people
came to the Library to
seek warmth, shelter, food
(thank goodness for the
Library café!) and power
to recharge devices so we
could stay connected to
technology, and to each
other. Many people have
told us that the Library truly
is Westport’s community
center. As Dan Woog,
Westport’s community blogger said, “It’s our warming
hut, meeting place, town
square, movie theater, food
court, bathroom, and
comfort zone all at once.”

When the town budget cuts
threatened the Library hours
for 16 Sundays, the SOS brought
out supporters in force to let the
Representative Town Meeting
know how they felt.
Hundreds of emails, letters to
the editor, and statements-atthe-public-meeting later, the
funds were restored, making
the 1000+ visits each Sunday
possible. Thanks to all!

Many of the service clubs
sought out ways to help the
Library serve its citizens. The
Westport Young Woman’s

The Y’s Women showed
support for keeping the
Library open on Sundays
with a timely gift. The
Westport Woman’s Club
donated funds for a job

Sunrise Rotary gave funds
for books in honor of each

The teen years are often the
time when young people
strike out to discover new
things. The Library is one
of the safest places for that
to happen. We’re proud to
report that year after year,
the borrowing of teen books
increases, the number who
choose the Library as a place
to study and learn grows,
and the number of teen
volunteers rises. A big thank
you to Main Street Resources
for underwriting summer
internships for teens.
Teens interested in becoming
active in the Library should

Clue: Words of praise
Molly Fording requested that
her friends celebrate her 8th
birthday by giving a gift to her
favorite place — the Westport
Public Library.
T R I B U T E S
Several years ago, when Irma

a special anniversary, they asked
their friends to pay tribute with
a donation to the Library.
And when Ed Keehan passed
away, the first place the family
thought of to receive donations was Ed’s favorite place,
the Westport Public Library.

for the evening
At the Library’s 12th annual fundraising gala, held on May 27, Will Shortz
received the Westport Public Library Award which honors those whose work
reflects the mission of the Library, to nurture the love of learning and to enhance
our understanding of the world. Shortz has been The New York Times crossword
puzzle editor since 1993. He has also, since 2000, hosted the Library’s annual Crossword Puzzle Contest.
Phil Donahue served as emcee along with vocalist Susan Terry, and professional
puzzle maker, Patrick Merrill, who created a crossword puzzle based on Shortz’s
life that was solved through audience participation. Another treat of the evening
was a word challenge game Shortz played with the audience of more than 400.

Friends
of the Library
It’s hard to find a person in Westport who ISN’T a “friend” of the
Library, and in this annual report you’ll find the names of those
who have officially declared themselves Friends of the Library.
What does that mean? Each and every one has made a monetary
contribution because they want the Westport Public Library to
be as good as it possibly can be. But it’s more than simply writing a
check or making an online contribution. It’s about the potential
for involvement.
As a Friend, you have many ways to get involved....
