Message from our Principal - Mrs. Grant
Welcome back to another wonderful school year at Manz Elementary School! These first
two weeks have been filled with students and staff getting to know each other and learning
lots of new things together. With the new year comes some new faces at Manz. One of
those new faces will be in our office, so I’d like to introduce you all to Kristin Holtman-Funk
who will be our new secretary. Mrs. Miske is moving to a new position at our central office.
Her last day here will be this Friday, September 9. Thank you to Mrs. Miske for all she has
done to support our school. We appreciate all she has done and will miss her.
Please join me in welcoming Ms. Holtman-Funk to our Manz community. Ms. Holtman-Funk wanted to
make her name easy for students, so at school she will go by Ms. Funk.
Ms. Funk and I are committed to making this transition goes as smooth as possible for our Manz
community. We know it will take some time for her to learn everything she needs to know about our
school and how we operate. One thing that we know will take some time is getting to
know our Manz parents and students. When you come to buzz in at the front door or
call on the phone, please make sure to introduce yourself and understand that she will
need to ask for identification since everyone will be unfamiliar to her these first few
weeks. Ms. Funk would love to meet our families, so feel free to stop in and
introduce yourself. You can reach Ms. Funk at 852-3901 or [email protected]
Please join me in extending a warm Manz Mustang WELCOME to Ms. Funk!

Manz School Family Night Scavenger Hunt - Tuesday, September 20
You are invited to our second annual Manz Family Night Scavenger Hunt! Stop in between
6:00-7:00pm for a family scavenger hunt, parent/teacher meet & greet, a treat provided by
PTA, and playground fun. All children attending the event must be accompanied by an adult.
Manz Bulletin
We will be e-mailing the newsletter to all parents/guardians who we have e-mail addresses for in our
student database. Each bulletin is also posted on the Manz website and hard copies will be sent home to
those of you who requested that on Orientation Day. Today’s bulletin will be much longer than usual
due to the need to share important beginning of the year information. Please make sure to read
through this entire newsletter. Also, please note that other school notices will be sent home with the
oldest child in your family. This helps us to save paper by sending only one copy per family. Please
remember to check with your oldest child for these papers.
School safety and security- all visitors must sign in
Safety at school is our utmost concern. For that reason, all of our doors are locked during the school day.
Visitors and parents are only allowed to enter the building through the front door at all times of the day
and will need to ring the buzzer and show identification to be buzzed into the building. We require all
people that enter the building to sign-in in the office where you will pick up a visitor badge to wear
during your visit. If you are picking your child up from school during the school day for an
appointment, please come to the office and we will call the classroom teacher to send your child down to
the lobby to meet you. Please help us to keep our school secure by following these rules at all times.
District Policies
You can find information about district policies and procedures in the District Parent/Student Handbook
at: http://www.ecasd.us/ECASD/media/District-Site/PDFs/Board/Parent-Student-Handbook-2016final.pdf
Directory Information
The School District may release student directory information unless the adult student, parent, legal
guardian, or guardian ad litem issues a written exception. Directory information, which is information that
is generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if released, can be disclosed to outside
organizations without a parent’s prior written consent. Parents/guardians have until September 15 to
inform the school that all or part of any directory data may not be released without their prior
consent. An “Opt Out Form” must be filled out to make this request. Forms are available at each school
building or at the link below. The completed form should be returned to the building secretary by
September 15 if you so desire. Please note that this form will be in effect on the date it is signed and will
be valid indefinitely unless you notify the school in writing that directory data can again be released.
We publish a Manz School Directory each year with each student’s name, address, and home phone
number. The reason we publish a directory is to help families and students connect with each other
outside of school. This directory will be published shortly after the September 15 deadline. You must
complete the Opt Out form if you do not want your directory information published. Unless you
complete this Opt Out Form, your student’s name, address, and phone number will be printed in our
school directory that is distributed to all families this fall.
Click here to find the “Opt Out” form: http://www.ecasd.us/ECASD/media/District-Site/PDFs/Opt_Out_Form.pdf

Student Drop Off / Pick Up on Eisenhower Street
The school side of Eisenhower Street is designated for student drop off and pick up
only. If you are using this designated area, please make sure your child is ready to exit
your vehicle by themselves. Once your child is out of the vehicle please continue to
exit to avoid a traffic back up. If you need additional time with your child or if your
child needs assistance, please choose a different location a short distance from the
school and have them walk in. Safety Patrollers will get them safely across
intersections.
Photographing and Filming
If you do not want your child to be photographed or videotaped during the school year, please contact the
office to receive the appropriate form to document this request or click on the following link to find the
“Opt Out” form: http://www.ecasd.us/ECASD/media/District-Site/PDFs/Opt_Out_Form.pdf
Behavior Expectations
At Orientation day, you received a document outlining our behavior expectations and procedures at Manz.
Please take some time to read that document. Our focus these first few weeks at school is on teaching
Manz students our expectations. All students have participated in lessons that we call “cool tools.” These
“cool tools” teach our behavior expectations and allow students to practice those expectations right away.
Our school-wide expectation statement is:
“At Manz School we will be kind, respectful, responsible, and safe.
We will do our best and have fun!”
Acknowledging our students at Manz…
At Manz, we believe it’s important to acknowledge and recognize students when they are following our
school-wide beliefs. We are making a special effort to take note when a student displays kindness,
respect, responsibility, and safe behaviors. If you hear from us that your child has been displaying our
school-wide beliefs, please thank your child for helping us to reach our school goals!
There are several different ways we acknowledge students for following our school-wide expectations. A
few things you may notice this year:
 We will have a daily morning announcement. This announcement sets the stage for a day of doing
our best and having fun together at school. Ask your child to tell you more about these morning
announcements. He/she might even have some facts, trivia, or jokes to share with
you. 
 Staff members will be sending postcards in the mail to thank students for following
our school-wide expectations.
 Teachers nominate students to get special recognition from Mrs. Grant. Mrs. Grant
writes a letter and mails it home to the family explaining why we are proud of the student.
 Your child may come home with a sticker that says, “Ask me why I got
this sticker!” When that happens, be sure to ask your child about it. Staff
will give these stickers out to students who are observed following our
school-wide expectations.

pregnancy, marital status or parental status, sexual orientation or disability.
Manz Cafeteria
We want our cafeteria to be a warm and welcoming place. However, we don’t have a lot of
space in the cafeteria once the students are seated. For that reason, we ask that families do
not come to eat breakfast or lunch together in the cafeteria. If one parent/visitor wants to
come to school to eat lunch occasionally, we can accommodate that. We ask that lunch
time visitors bring a cold lunch from home or eat a school lunch. When families bring
in McDonalds, Subway, Culvers, and other restaurant foods, the other children feel left out.
Thank you for your understanding.
Allergy Issues at School
We have several students at Manz who have life threatening allergies. Because of these life-threatening
allergies, we have put certain policies and procedures in place. Most of our classrooms are now “nutfree.” Our number one obligation to all students is to provide a safe environment at school. These
policies and procedures are in place to help us provide that safe environment. Your child may bring a
peanut butter sandwich from home to eat in the lunchroom as long as he/she does not eat at the “nut free”
table. In addition, this lunch must stay in your child’s backpack to reduce the risk of cross contamination.
To ensure safety for all, parents are also asked not to bring pets/animals on to the school grounds or in to
our building.
Special Observance Days at School
You may have noticed that in the next two weeks we are observing several special days
at school- Mildred Fish Harnack Day, US Constitution Day, Wisconsin Day, POW-MIA
Day, and Bullying Awareness Day. Why do we do this? Wisconsin state law requires
schools to observe these specials days throughout the school-year. Observing these days
at school may be as simple as announcing to the class that the day is a special day or it
may be a more involved learning activity depending on the observance day and age level
of the students. For more information, go to this link: http://dpi.wi.gov/news/observance-days
Crisis Plan
We have a crisis plan at school and review that plan on a yearly basis in addition to holding monthly
drills. In the event of an evacuation that requires us to leave school property, we will evacuate to Peace
Lutheran Church, 501 E. Fillmore Ave. If there is an emergency that requires us to leave the school
grounds, parents should check email and the news for directions on where to pick up their children.
Students who ride the bus will be transported home on the bus after the media has notified the public of
the emergency evacuation.
Community Events
The Eau Claire Area School District offers a Community Events section on its web site. Families and
students may go to this Community Events page to view flyers for upcoming events in our community
that apply to school-age students and families. If provided by the organization, paper copies for events
may also be available in common areas of our buildings, but will not be sent home in students’ folders
any longer.
