About Lent
The word ‘lent’ is an old English word that means ‘lengthen’ and also
‘spring’.
Religious beliefs are always influenced by the world around them. So then, in the
northern hemisphere, where many core Chris an tradi ons developed over the centuries,
lent happens at the me of year when days are lengthening towards spring, and for its new
life.
Spring in the natural world is a me to get ready for growth by cleaning out what has
died, preparing the ground and plan ng. Lent for believers is a me to prepare for new
growth and new life.
Just as there are certain things gardeners in all mes and places do for new growth,
believers in all mes and places do certain things for that bring new growth: Studying
scripture, praying, shedding things and habits that have lost their purpose because we no
longer need them, and giving and serving in ways that will grow into more good for people

Quotes from Mar&n Luther:
•
“Cannons and fire-arms are cruel and damnable machines; I believe them to have been
the direct sugges on of the Devil. If Adam had seen in a vision the horrible instruments
his children were to invent, he would have died of grief.”
•
“Forgiveness is God's command.”
•
“Every man must do two things alone; he must do his own believing and his own dying.”
•
“The human heart is like a ship on a stormy sea driven about by winds blowing from all
four corners of heaven.”
•
“Chris ans are rare people on earth.”
•
“Our Lord has wriCen the promise of resurrec on, not in books alone, but in every leaf in

•
“I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor
safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen.”

Weekly Parking at Pilgrim
F S
We would like to remind everyone who comes to the church during weekly business hours to park in the
blue parking spaces if at all possible. The yellow striped spaces are contracted with UWS for their use. UWS
Parking Services monitors the lot and will ticket those who park improperly. In exchange for permitting the
university partial use of Pilgrim’s lot, the university helps to maintain it by plowing in the winter which saves the
church quite a bit of money.
There are five blue spaces designated for Pilgrim use only on the south side of the church next to the old
elevator door. There are about 20 blue spaces in the main lot area closest to the portico. (Of course they are
hard to see in the winter.) The signs in the middle of the lot show where the designations begin and end. For
major events such as funerals, and for groups who regularly meet at the church, we notify the university and
Pilgrim patrons are permitted to park anywhere in our lot. Parking configurations may change next year with
the coming Belknap Street project.
Attendance
Our records show the average weekly attendance in February as follows:
2014 ~ 117
Pilgrim’s annual Rummage/ and Bake Sale will be Saturday, May 13th from 8 to 3 in conjunction with Our
Savior’s and Concordia. All three churches will be advertising for each other. Donations accepted through May
12th. Items not accepted: electronics, large furniture, beds and mattresses, medical equipment, etc. Any questions, please contact Tanya Haugland.
CASDA to Visit and Share Information with Pilgrim Sunday, March 12th
If you or someone you know is experiencing the trauma of domestic violence, sexual assault or child abuse,
the Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse, Inc. (CASDA), can help.
Located in Superior’s East End, CASDA provides supportive services to adult and child victims and survivors — whether they are facing violence in the present or struggling in the aftermath of past abuse.
CASDA’s phone (715-392-3136 or 1-800-649-2921) is answered by a staff person 24 hours a day, and its
advocates help connect callers with the services that best fit their immediate needs. CASDA offers short-term
crisis counseling and emotional support; an emergency shelter for women and children needing to escape a
violent home; a children’s program for youth who have been abused or witnessed violence; and legal advocacy for individuals needing assistance with restraining orders or other court proceedings related to the abuse
they have suffered. CASDA also offers referrals to other valuable community resources, and gladly provides
speakers on topics related to domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.
Finally, CASDA invites individuals and groups to help carry out its mission! Volunteers assist in many areas,
including transportation, childcare, office support, fundraising and public education. CASDA’s Board of Directors also welcomes new members who contribute time, talent, financial support and business expertise to help
ensure the agency’s effectiveness.
For more information about CASDA’s services, volunteer opportunities or public education program, you are
invited to meet members of its staff before, between and after Pilgrim’s March 12th Sunday services. You may
also call 715-392-3136 or visit www.casda.org.

Consider Giving For the Long Term
Pilgrim’s Endowment Funds provide ongoing, long term support for bringing Pilgrim’s ministry deeper into
our church, community and world. The funds secure this future ministry by giving for it now.
When making gifts to the endowment, donors can designate if their gifts should be used for a particular
purpose. Or donors may decide that the congregation’s leaders should decide how and when to use it. Most
endowment funds use only their interest income, leaving the principal to keep on generating income.
Many kinds of gifts can be given, including cash, life insurance and assets that can be easily converted to
cash such as publicly traded securities and

The 95 Theses
Disputations of Doctor Martin Luther
on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences (1517)
The Progress will print Luther’s
95 Theses through October 2017.
These are numbers 41-50.
___________________________________________________________________________
Out of love for the truth and from desire to elucidate it, the Reverend Father Martin Luther, Master of
Arts and Sacred Theology, and ordinary lecturer therein at Wittenberg, intends to defend the following
statements and to dispute on them in that place. Therefore he asks that those who cannot be present and
dispute with him orally shall do so in their absence by letter. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
___________________________________________________________________________
Disputations 41-50
41. Papal indulgences must be preached with caution, lest
people erroneously think that they are preferable to other good works of love.
42. Christians are to be taught that the pope does not intend
that the buying of indulgences should in any way be
compared with works of mercy.
43. Christians are to be taught that he who gives to the poor
or lends to the needy does a better deed than he who
buys indulgences.
44. Because love grows by works of love, man thereby becomes better. Man does not, however, become better by Unless I am convinced by proofs from
means of indulgences but is merely freed from penalties. Scriptures or by plain and clear reasons
and arguments, I can and will not retract,
45. Christians are to be taught that he who sees a needy man for it is neither safe nor wise to do anyand passes him by, yet gives his money for indulgences, thing against conscience. Here I stand. I
does not buy papal indulgences but God's wrath.
can do no other. God help me. Amen.
Martin Luther (1483-1546)
46. Christians are to be taught that, unless they have more
than they need, they must reserve enough for their family needs and by no means squander it on indulgences.
47. Christians are to be taught that the buying of indulgences is a matter of free choice, not
commanded.
48. Christians are to be taught that the pope, in granting indulgences, needs and thus desires
their devout prayer more than their money.
49. Christians are to be taught that papal indulgences are useful only if they do not put their
trust in them, but very harmful if they lose their fear of God because of them.
50. Christians are to be taught that if the pope knew the exactions of the indulgence preachers, he would rather that the basilica of St. Peter were burned to ashes than built up with
the skin, flesh, and bones of his sheep.

Reformation Observance at Pilgrim during Lent
(submitted by David Tryggestad)
Our year-long observance of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation continues through the season of Lent, which begins with Ash Wednesday, March
1. The order of service for worship at 10 a.m. starting March 12 will feature
Reformation hymns substituting for elements of the Ordinary of the liturgy —
those parts of the liturgy that are sung or said every Sunday, or “Ordinary.”
As the Kyrie — “Lord, have mercy” — we will sing “Your Heart, O God, Is
Grieved” (ELW 602), a three-stanza Trinitarian hymn, each stanza invoking a
Person of the Holy Trinity. The author of the lyrics was Jiří Třanovský, a Lutheran pastor and
hymn writer from Cieszyn Silesia. Sometimes called the father of Slovak hymnody and the
"Luther of the Slavs," Třanovský's name is sometimes anglicized to George Tranoscius.
Our Gospel Acclamation will be “Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word” (ELW 517), again a
Trinitarian hymn. Martin Luther penned the lyrics, and the tune comes from 1543. We will sing
two stanzas before and one following the reading of the Gospel.
In response to the prayer petitions, we will sing the first phrase of “Grant Peace, We Pray, in
Mercy, Lord” (ELW 784), adapted from the plainsong by Luther. As in the season of Advent, a
handbell will intone our pitch and signal us to sing.
“O Christ, Lamb of God” (ELW 196), one of the earliest hymns of the Reformation, will be
sung during distribution of the Lord’s Supper.
