Rounding
You have to remember when to round your number up and when to round your number down.
When you are looking at the deciding digit (the digit which helps you round up or down) you have to note the following:
I
If the number is 1-4 you round down
I
If the number is 5-9 you round up
Here is some help rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand and million.

Units
Rounding to the nearest 10
Look at the digit in the Units place
–
i.e 63
The number in the units place is 3 so we have to round down
The new figure rounded to the nearest 10 is 60
Hundreds Tens
Rounding to the nearest 100
Look at the digit in the Tens place
Units
–
The new figure rounded to the nearest 100 is 600
i.e 560
The number in the tens place is 6 so we have to round up

Look at the digit in the Hundreds place

The number in the hundreds place is 9 so we have to round up
The new figure rounded to the nearest 1000 is 4000

Look at the digit in the Thousands place

The number in the thousands place is 2 so we have to round down
The new figure rounded to the nearest 10000 is 80000
Rounding to the nearest 1000000
Look at the digit in the hundred Thousands place

The new figure rounded to the nearest 1000000 is 3000000
The hundred thousands place is 4 so we have to round down
Now have a try at the activity – Place the rounded figures in the outer circle.
The figures in the middle section are the numbers that need rounding.
The figure in the centre tells you what nearest number to round the figures given to.
