The Ship Inn extends a warm welcome to today’s opposition, ably led by their
Captain, Callum D’Ath, who introduces Obolensky’s Heroes:
The Heroes are inspired by the legendary Prince Alexander Sergeevich “Obo” Obolensky, a ‘white
Russian’ who fled Russia after the revolution in 1917 and went on to score 2 brilliant tries as a dashing
winger for England, helping them defeat the All Blacks 13-0 at Twickenham in 1936. His first try, whereby
he ran three-quarters the length of the field to score, has been hailed as one of the greatest tries ever scored
by England. Obolensky’s Heroes were established in 1994 ostensibly as a touring rugby team playing in
competitions like the St Andrews University Rugby 7s and the Heineken Rugby 7s in Holland.
Since 2007 the Heroes have been playing cricket against the Ship Inn CC and the score between the two
teams is played 8; Ship Inn won 4, Obolenksy’s Heroes won 2, with 2 tied matches! In July 2012, we were
all hugely honoured when Princess Alexandra Obolensky visited the Ship Inn, Elie to watch the match
and present the Obolensky Cup to the victorious team - The Ship Inn. The Obolensky Cup is currently
held by Obolensky’s Heroes.
In the words of Daily Telegraph rugby correspondent Brendan Gallagher “Obolensky remains an
enduringly exotic figure, part David Duckham with a title, part James Dean in rugby boots.” While
Obolensky is justly famous for his rugby he did also play cricket. On the cricket pitch, or rather on Elie
beach, we, as players, aspire to be part Denis Compton, part Brian Lara, and quite like the James Dean
bit: in essence Prince Alexander Obolensky with a cricket bat & ball! It’s time for of us as Obolensky’s
Heroes to dig out our Brylcream and stiff upper lips, old fashioned values and bonne humeur as the Heroes
take on the Ship Inn XI in Elie for the much-coveted Obolensky Cup.
A message from today’s Match Sponsor – Aspall Cider
Eight generations of the Chevallier family have been producing Aspall cider since 1728. The
Chevallier family still live and work among the Clement orchards and today, Aspall is still run by the
same family. The orchards are in a tiny hamlet north of the small market town of Debenham in midSuffolk. We are honoured to be the main sponsor of today’s cricket match between the Ship Inn CC
and Obolensky’s Heroes. We hope that you all have a wonderful day and enjoy a refreshing glass of
Aspall Cider.
