This week we want to practice the comprehension skill of identifying the main idea of a story and the details. Ask your child what the story is “mostly about”. We need to think about the character’s problem and how the main character solves the problem. Robust Vocabulary Develop your child’s vocabulary through discussing a story. These are the words we will focus on this week: blockades, soaked, misplaced, principles, deny, consider, opinionated, bulk Fluency We want to build fluency and increase comprehension by varying our reading rate. Read at a rate that sounds like natural speech when you see words and phrases you know well. Spend more time on unfamiliar or difficult words. Practice reading text several times to build fluency. W riting Good writers add details about how things look, feel, and sound when we describe. Words such as in, on and under also tell where things are. A good description has a beginning, middle, and an end that creates a clear image of what is being describes. This is our goal this week along with using capitals and periods in sentences. Grammar This week we will talk about commands and exclamations. Mr. Mark’s News Peek at the Week 3 M Week of September 26 Book Order athematics Addition Facts This week we will continue to develop strategies to add proficiently. Vocabulary addends- each number added doubles facts- when addends are the same doubles-plus-one facts- when addends are only one apart Addition Strategies When you know doubles facts automatically (2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 6+6, 7+7, 8+8, 9+9) then you can use this to quickly figure out double-plus one fact. For example, 7+7 =14 so then 7+8=15 or just one more! Doubles-plus-one works great for 3+4, 4+5, 5+6, 6+7, 7+8, and 8+9. However it only works when students quickly recognize doubles. Please help your child learn their double facts. I have found that 6+6, 7+7, 8+8, and 9+9 are the hardest for some kids to remember. Constantly asking a child the same addition problem over a short period of time (a whole day), like a game, helps them quickly recognize the sum. Thank for all you do! The “Educational Challenge” is designed to raise money directly through pledges. What is nice about it is that 100% goes to the PTO. You don’t need to sell anything or buy anything. Please read the information sent home with your child on Monday. Every pledge helps! Jenna Pederson/Jen Mellin Halloween Party Dominic, Cadance, Emma Halloween is coming! I am seeking a few parents willing to put together this year’s party. In the past, we have done games and crafts in the multipurpose room during the afternoon. Costumes are fun but optional. I have a box of resources, games, and craft ideas. We will be using the $10 party money donation sent this fall to cover expenses. If you would be willing to help out with this fun afternoon, let me know. Amy Rother/Stephanie Filler Book Groups Our first week of book groups seemed to go very well. I am developing a schedule with leaders and PTO volunteers to fill in as substitutes. Book groups are Fridays at 1:30-2:00. Plan to meet the buses at 11:00am at Engwalls. We will learn about farming food, go through the corn maze, and plan corn! Second graders will be learning about plants in the spring. This is a fun way to experience plants. We will be there about an hour.
