Penny Weight

Penny Weight
Mathematical Goals
*Solve two-step problems using more than one
operation
*Convert dollars to pennies
*Use multiplication within 100 to solve word
problems.
Common Core Standards
OA.7: Multiply and divide within 100.
OA.1, OA.3: Represent and solve problems involving
multiplication and division.
OA.8, OA.9: Solve problems involving the four operations,
and identify and explain patterns in arithmetic.
NBT.3: Use place value understanding and properties of
operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.4
MD.2: Solve problems involving measurement and
estimation of interval of time, liquid volumes, and masses of
objects.

Vocabulary
Materials
Grams, multiplication, estimation
Grams, weight, admission, penny, dollar, scale
Roll of pennies (two if preferable), pencil, paper,
scale (with grams), Math book for extension, Math
Journal.
Launch
Time:
Pass a roll of pennies around and ask students to estimate the weight.
Explore
Time:
Task:
Rolls of coins are sometimes weighed to check how many are inside.
A penny weighs about 3g.
You are going to the movies tonight but you only have pennies to pay
for your ticket! How much will your admission weigh in penny weight?
Questions to ask:
What tools can you use?
What have you done?
Show me your thinking.
What does this mean?
Can you explain it to me.
How do you know?
Is there another way?
Is there another factor we are forgetting?
Debrief
Time:
Facilitators look for:
-Conversion between dollars and pennies
-Correct use of multiplication (instead of repeated addition)
-Understanding of grams
-Different ways to show correct thinking
Questions you could ask:
Compare your answer with those of the other students.
Does another person’s answer change your way of thinking?
Explain how you would help someone else understand your thinking.
Extensions
A: How much would it weigh in pennies for you to buy a carton of
chocolate milk at school?
B: How much would it weigh in pennies to buy a carton of chocolate
milk for your entire class?
C: Which weighs more, your math book, or the pennies it would cost
you to purchase your math book?
Assessment
Possible assessments to choose from:
-Observe student’s stamina, participation, and effort during
exploration.
-Have students write journal entry answering one of the Debrief
questions:
Compare your answer with those of the other students.
Does another person’s answer change your way of thinking?
Explain how you would help someone else understand your thinking.
-Grade using Math Task Rubric (will be on wiki soon)
