This program is a great way to get your students engaged and excited about studying their sight words and learning with their friends. The overall value of this program is that it can change the way you teach sight words and the way your students learn sight words. Your students will go from learning with flash cards and word wall lists to playing games. They will look forward to and want to “practice” their words while playing Twister or any of the other games. We Aren’t BOGGLED By Words! uses games like Twister, Candy Land, Boggle, Scrabble, and Bananagrams to review sight words. The students play these games and help each other with the words they are currently learning and review words that have already been taught. The teacher is in complete control over which words are included in each game. This program was created for a first grade classroom with eighteen students. It can easily be adapted to any grade level. Simply use the words that are appropriate for your age group. Not only will your students be having fun but they will be learning! They will be challenging themselves and helping each other to learn their words and learn them quickly. They are not just memorizing them for a short time but they are remembering them forever. When they see these words in their reading books they will have no problem recalling them and even say things like, “Hey! I saw this word in Candy Word Land yesterday!” It’s exciting to see students excited to learn and having so much fun while they are learning. The time spent implementing this program will pay huge dividends in your students fluency skills. This can easily be adapted for any grade level by using different word lists. You could also use vocabulary words from Science, Social Studies, and Math units. It is also easy to differentiate instruction with these games since changing levels is as easy as changing the words used. n LESSON PLAN TITLES 1 Sight Word Journals 2 Word Twister 3 Candy Word Land 4 Boggle 5 Scrabble Points 6 Bananagrams n MATERIALS Materials for each lesson are listed with each lesson plan. The students will need to work as a team to see how many sight words they can build and keep connected like a crossword puzzle. Start with this week’s words and see how you do. Then, add more words from your Sight Word Journal. You can make different lists of words for your students to try to connect or you can stick with your weekly lists. Any Additional Information (where to find resources, etc.): This can be challenging for some students. If the students are having trouble making the words into a crossword puzzle, they can try to connect just 2 or 3 words in groups instead of connecting all of the words. The more they play this game the better they get! n GR ADES First n OBJECTIVES Students will recognize and increase their number of sight words quickly and accurately through playing games. n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS RF.1.3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. n MATERIALS • Appropriate grade level sight word list • Bannagrams Game • Blank White Book Marks • Assorted Fun Pencils INFORMATION n EVALUATION/ ASSESSMENT The assessment for We Aren’t BOGGLED By Words! is a simple sight word check sheet which has been attached.
