n PROGR AM OVERVIEW
n OVER ALL VALUE
We Aren’t BOGGLED By Words!
is a program designed to help students
learn and review their sight words while
using games they are already familiar
with playing. This program is a great
way to get your students engaged and
excited about studying their sight words
and learning with their friends.
The overall value of this program
is that it can change the way you teach
sight words and the way your students
learn sight words. Your students will go
from learning with flash cards and word
wall lists to playing games. They will
look forward to and want to “practice”
their words while playing Twister or any
of the other games.
We Aren’t BOGGLED By Words!
uses games like Twister, Candy Land,
Boggle, Scrabble, and Bananagrams
to review sight words. The students play
these games and help each other with
the words they are currently learning
and review words that have already
been taught. The teacher is in complete
control over which words are included in
each game.
This program was created for a first
grade classroom with eighteen students.
It can easily be adapted to any grade
level. Simply use the words that are
appropriate for your age group.
Not only will your students be having
fun but they will be learning! They will
be challenging themselves and helping
each other to learn their words and
learn them quickly. They are not just
memorizing them for a short time but
they are remembering them forever.
When they see these words in their
reading books they will have no problem
recalling them and even say things like,
“Hey! I saw this word in Candy Word
Land yesterday!” It’s exciting to see
students excited to learn and having so
much fun while they are learning.
The time spent implementing this
program will pay huge dividends in your
students fluency skills. This can easily
be adapted for any grade level by using
different word lists. You could also use
vocabulary words from Science, Social
Studies, and Math units. It is also easy
to differentiate instruction with these
games since changing levels is as easy
as changing the words used.

dot so you can slide your word cards
inside and change them easily. Print all

them out. Then fill each baggie with one
of the sight word cards. These words can
be changed as you learn new words or
need to review old words.

n DIRECTIONS
Reading (sight words)
To prepare the materials, print the
sight words onto address labels, cut
them out, and place one word on each
colored square on your Candy Land
playing cards. Then, play the Candy
Word Land game just like the Candy
Land instructions state (in the Candy
Land box). However, you cannot move
to the colored box that it shows unless
you say the word(s) correctly. If you say
the word incorrectly, your team will tell
you the correct way to say it and you will
lose that turn. The first person to reach
the finish line wins!

n DIRECTIONS
Reading (sight words)
n OBJECTIVES
Shake up the boggle tiles and see
how they fall. Now each student tries
to see how many sight words they can
find using just the letters they can see.
The person who can find the most sight
words before the timer goes off wins that
round! Everyone must share their words
with their team and check their friend’s
words to make sure they are correct.
Students will recognize and increase
their number of sight words quickly
and accurately through playing
games.
When they are finished with the
first round they can shake it up and play
again! Everyone can write their words in
their Sight Word Journals.

n DIRECTIONS
Reading (sight words), Math (addition)
Students will write the sight words
down in his/her Sight Word Journal.
Then, they will need to spell each sight
word for that week with the Scrabble
Tiles. Add up how many “points” each
word equals. Last, write each sight
word in a sentence starting with the
word that is worth the most points first
and ending with the word that is worth
the least amount of points. If students
have extra time they can find other sight
words and see how many “points” those
words are worth.

Lesson Plan No 6: Bananagrams
n SUBJECTS COVERED
n DIRECTIONS
n ADDITIONAL
Reading (sight words)
Put all of the Bananagram tiles out
on the table or floor. The students will
need to work as a team to see how
many sight words they can build and
keep connected like a crossword puzzle.
Start with this week’s words and see
how you do. Then, add more words from
your Sight Word Journal. You can make
different lists of words for your students
to try to connect or you can stick with
your weekly lists.
Any Additional Information (where
to find resources, etc.): This can be
challenging for some students. If the
students are having trouble making the
words into a crossword puzzle, they can
try to connect just 2 or 3 words in groups
instead of connecting all of the words.
The more they play this game the better
they get!
