Strengths • Land Ordinance of 1785: A law that divided western land into sections for new settlers. • Northwest Ordinance of 1787: A law that set up how a territory would become a state. (a way to admit new states) 1. Inhabitants would not have many rights at first. 2. Once there were 60,000 people the territory could apply to become a state. 3. New states would be equal to all other states. Depression falls on the new nation. Shays’ Rebellion • Daniel Shays was a Revolutionary War veteran and farmer from Massachusetts. • He had not yet been paid for his services. • Massachusetts was in debt and began to levy high taxes on landowners. • Massachusetts Government threatened to take away land from any landowner who did not pay their taxes. Besides the loss of land and money, why else would farmers be upset for losing their land? Because, only landowning white men had the right to vote. Shays’ Rebellion • Daniel Shays led a group of farmers to rebel against high taxes in Massachusetts. • When Massachusetts turned to the National Government fro help, none came. • The National Government was powerless • Massachusetts formed a state militia to put down the rebellion. Why is Shays’ Rebellion significant? • It proved the National Government was not strong enough to protect it’s citizens. • It resulted in the Constitutional Convention, 1787 • Leaders from all states would create a new and stronger government.
