In 1883 US Army Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka led a small
expedition on a raft down the Yukon River 3,200 kilometers to
the Bering Sea. His most memorable moments were spent
near what is today Whitehorse. Here the crew was forced to
pole their primitive "corvette" through narrow Miles Canyon
and over infamous White Horse Rapids. Fifteen years later,
tens of thousands of gold rush stampeders, including the
famous novelist Jack London, would take all manner of hastily
built craft through the same obstacle course.
Now you too can heed "the call of
the wild" and retrace their passage,
experiencing all of the beauty with
none of the fear. The rapids have
been covered by gentle Schwatka
Lake, and Miles Canyon can be
safely navigated by our comfortable
cruise boat the MV Schwatka. Enjoy
