GRANT WRITER
New York City Mission Society helps children, youth, and families in New York City’s poorest
neighborhoods transcend the ills of poverty and create a cycle of success for generations to come. We

Title: Grant Writer
Reports to: Senior Vice President of Advancement
Position: Full-Time Non-exempt; 35 hours/week
Location: Minisink Townhouse, 646 Malcolm X Blvd., New York, NY 10037
Position Description: NYC Mission is seeking an experienced and creative Grant Writer to join the fiveperson Advancement Department. As a member of the Advancement Department, the grant writer
is responsible for maintaining and developing a portfolio of private funders; conducting prospect and
grant research; managing donor relationships and the proposal development process from beginning
to end. The grant writer is a part of the team responsible for requesting all of the Mission Society’s
foundation and corporation funding and in-kind donations.
Responsibilities:
• Lead the writing and submission process of all foundation grant proposals in conjunction with
program and finance staff;
• Write and submit grant proposals, cover letters, follow-up correspondence and related interim and
final reports;
• Manage tracking systems for grant submission and reporting deadlines;
• Assist in drafting and preparing budgets for proposal submissions in conjunction with program and
finance staff;
• Monitor fulfillment of grant deliverables in conjunction with program staff;
• Stay abreast with grant making trends and best practices;
• Participate and support annual fundraiser planning process;
• Assist with special events.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have 5 or more years’ experience working as a grant writer in a nonprofit
fundraising department and a record of successfully funded foundation grants. The Grant Writer will
have a willingness to engage and develop relationships with prospective funders and a demonstrated
proficiency in researching and analyzing complex information and statistics while managing multiple
grant deadlines.
BA required, MA preferred.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office products, online grant submissions systems and Raisers Edge or a
similar database is required. Knowledge of NYC HHS Accelerator system and RFP submissions is a
plus.
