Personal Protective Equipment guidelines
Each workplace or site presents unique situations and potential hazards and thus Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) becomes imperative and in some cases a legal requirement when a hazard cannot be
removed from the workplace, or when engineering controls are insufficient to control the hazard. PPE does
create a barrier between the user and the hazard. Standards have been developed for hard hats, work
shoes, gloves, eyewear, and respirators.
Types of Personal Protection Equipment
• Eye protection: Operators are required to wear safety glasses or chemical splash goggles at all times
when they perform work involving hazardous materials. If an operator is performing any task such as
sawing, grinding, welding, or spray-painting, safety glasses/face shields specific to those tasks must be worn.
• Hand protection: Appropriate gloves are required to be worn when hands are exposed to potential
hazards. These hazards may arise from exposure to any item or substance that has the potential to damage
the skin or pass through the skin’s protective barrier.
• Hearing protection: Hearing protective devices are required in areas that experience elevated
noise levels.
• Respiratory protection: Operators involved with asbestos removal, chemical emergency response,
facilities maintenance, plant operations, and infectious materials require respirators.
• Foot protection: Operators and employees who work in the maintenance shops, plant operations areas,
construction sites and medical environments are required to wear SABS approved steel-toe cap footwear.
• Protective clothing: All persons involved in chemical/high fire risk environments are required to wear
SABS approved protective wear. Construction and engineering environments utilise generic “Conti suits “to
protect employees and create a company image with appropriate branding.
• Head protection: SABS approved hard hats must be worn when entering or working in a construction
sites or areas such as warehouses where there is a requirement to protect the head from falling objects,
bumps, and abrasions.
• Torso protection: Many hazards can threaten the torso such as heat, splashes from hot metal and liquids
impacts, cuts, acids, and radiation. Employees who are involved in such activities must wear the appropriate
protective PPE such as a vest, jacket, apron, coveralls, or full body suit as required by legislation.
