Circumference Review
Jim Hebeisen
Plymouth, MN
3 to 5
Math, Vocabulary, Science
Students will pretend to be employees of the
Temperate Tree Service company and determine the
Diameter at Breast Height of a variety of trees.
30 minutes
Classroom
Students will REVIEW how to find diameter of a
circle when the circumference is known. Students
will be given exposure to terms used in forestry.
Copies of the Circumference Review pdf for each
student and calculators
Use this activity as a review after students understand
the relationship between circumference and diameter.
You may have the students do the activity alone or in
small groups. Students should also understand how to
round numbers to the nearest tenth and how to use a
calculator in order to be successful with the activity.

Forest Management
Professionals
Dear EmployeesOur company has been hired to to use our BEST MANAGEMENT
PRACTICES to THIN some trees from the Andrews’ Forest using
SELECTIVE CUTTING. Since this is an UNEVEN-AGED STAND, we need
to make sure we plan carefully to maintain the BIOLOGICAL
DIVERSITY of the area while at the same time assuring that we make
a profit from our work.
I don’t need to tell you that economic times are tough right now, and
we need to do all we can to contain our costs. Therefore, it is
extremely important that we measure each tree as acurately as possible
so that we do not HARVEST trees using inappropriate equipment (which
would raise our fuel and labor costs) or harvest trees that will not yeild
the most wood which we will sell to our local sawmill.
I have measured the circumference of the group of trees we will be
harvesting which will create the most profit for us and create a
healthier forest for years to come for the Andrews’ family. Your job is
to compute the DIAMETER AT BREAST HEIGHT. Compute twice, cut once!
Your Boss,
Remember:
Pi = 3.14
Diameter = Circumference ÷ Pi
(Special thanks to the Temperate Forest
Foundation for providing the bases
for the definitions.)
o Best Management Practices: Doing all we can to protect and
maintain water and stream quality, prevent and reduce the amount
of pollution, and maintain wildlife habitat while we conduct forestry
activities.
o Biological Diversity: The variety of life forms in a given area
including plants, mammals, birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles, etc.
o Diameter at Breast Height: The diameter of a tree measured in
inches at breast height – a standard 4.5 feet above the ground.
o Harvest: Cutting down trees so that the wood can be used in a
variety of ways including construction and making furniture.
o Selective Cutting: Removing individual trees or groups of trees to
improve the quality of the forest left behind.
o Thin: Cutting a few trees from a forest for a variety of reasons,
including helping smaller high-quality trees to grow, enhancing tree
health, and benefiting wildlife due to the increase in ground
vegecation after thinning occurs.
o Uneven-Aged Stand: A forest area composed of trees of different
ages and sizes.
