INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF ORAL IMPLANTOLOGISTS
DECEMBER 2015
Results of Berlin World
Congress...Wunderbar!
The ICOI celebrated its 32nd World Congress
this past October in the German capital
of Berlin with over 600 attendees from 40
countries around the world. As reported earlier,
this World Congress was co-hosted by ICOI’s
German Component Society, the DGOI, and
the BDIZ EDI, the German society which
excels in the business and regulatory aspects
of dentistry. The weather in Berlin over our
Congress dates, October 15-17, 2015 was
reminiscent of a spring in London, i.e. cloudy
and rainy, but the atmosphere in the lecture
and exhibit halls was anything but gloomy.
ICOI World
Congress XXXII
in Berlin, Germany 1, 3-6
Dr. Filipa Braga from Portugal discussed
Digital Dentistry in Complex Cases.
The Congress got off with a bang when
Dr. Kostantinos Valavanis presented his
fabulous program of international Young
Implantologists. This author was concerned
that there would be limited interest in the
Young Implantologist concept. Happily, I was
very wrong. The four-hour program attracted a
standing-room-only crowd of some young, but
mostly more experienced delegates who filled
the hall to learn from these speakers. Spreading
the word of our next generation leaders were
the following speakers:
Dr. Paolo Nuzzolo from Italy showed how to
achieve Platform Switching: “Con Morse” and
Implant Morphology to Optimize Function
and Aesthetics.
Dr. Roberta Gasparro from Italy who opened
the program with Ultra-short Implants: A
Novel Mini Invasive Treatment Opportunity.
Greece’s Dr. Nicolaos Mallios questioned
the audience on Optimum
Graft for Reconstruction of
Absorbed Ridges: Autogenous
Bone, Allografts, Xenografts or
Alloplastic Materials?
Dr. Teruaki Homma from Japan who spoke
on One Abutment One Change, Digital
Prosthetic Protocol.
Dr. Elisa Choukroun from France (whose
proud father, Joseph, was a Main Podium
speaker) lectured on Socket Management for
Secondary Implantation-A Biological Approach.
INSIDE THIS
ISSUE
Dr. Daniel Grubeanu from Germany
addressed Predictable Implant Aesthetics in
the Esthetic Zone by Intelligent Abutment
Selection. The Concept “Atlantis”.
Dr. Giuseppe Pantaleo from Italy focused
on Different Indication of Regenerative
Biomaterials: Our Clinical Experience.
Dr. Tom Giblin from
Australia focused his lecture on
Incorporating Digital Dentistry
into the Modern Implant
Practice.

Drs. Fred Bergmann, Ady Palti and Konstantinos Valavanis composed a marvelous Main
Podium program which ran Friday and Saturday. The topical theme for this Congress
was, “Evidence Based Innovation in Oral Implantology”. Dr. Ralf Smeets from Hamburg,
Germany opened the program with his examination of alternatives to autogenous bone
grafts. Dr. Galip Gurel from Istanbul, Turkey focused on digital communication skills
necessary for minimally invasive dentistry. Dr. Ilia Roussou from Athens, Greece featured
a lecture on occlusal considerations in implant restoration when bruxism is an issue.
Dr. Konstantinos Valavanis, also from Athens, Greece shared his views on implant
therapy strategies for the aesthetic zone.
Following the lunch break on Friday, Dr. Pascal Marquardt of Cologne, Germany
Dr. Werner Stermann, Poster Presentation Chair
provided another lecture on implant placement in the aesthetic zone, this focused on
(right), with Dr. Leonidas Podaropoulos (left)
advanced and approved techniques for predictable single implant placement. Dr. Paolo
during the tabletop and poster competition.
Trisi, from Pescara, Italy provided an interesting report on where we are in implant
stability. Dr. Fouad Khoury of Olsberg, Germany dealt with oral rehabilitation in patients with severe bone loss showing the long term
results of the surgical approach with autogenous bone grafts. Dr. Ady Palti, from Baden Baden, Germany concluded the afternoon
session with a lecture on new techniques and materials for sinus elevation.
Saturday’s Main Podium got off to a rousing start with Dr. Eric Rompen from Liege, Belgium and his interesting statistical report on
extraction socket management with immediate or delay implant placement. Dr. Gerard Scortecci, Nice, France showed how we are
now breaking the limits with new technologies including distraction osteogenesis and immediate full mouth rehabilitation using full
zirconium screw-secured-to-implant for fixed prostheses. Dr. Joseph Choukroun from Nice, France provided a course on platelet rich
fibrin and advanced PRF showing the healing improvement in soft and hard tissue. He closed with biological and pharmacological
factor for success in implantology.
The afternoon session began with Dr. Jaafar Mouhyi, from Casablanca, Morocco who answered the question of whether or not there
is any treatment for the implant specific pathology, peri-implantitis. Dr. Marius Steigmann from Neckargemund, Germany lectured
on new incision flap design and sutures in implant dentistry. Dr. Mariusz Duda of Katowice, Poland, in spite of technical audio
problems, gave an impressive presentation on implant cases with complications compared with successful cases. Dr. Richard Leesungbok

ICD 60th Annual European Meeting and
International Council Meeting in Dublin, Ireland
Immediately prior to our Berlin World Congress, on October
7-11, the European Section of the International College of
Denists (ICD) held its 60th Annual Meeting in conjunction
with an ICD International Council Meeting in Dublin,
Ireland. At the Induction Ceremony over 40 Candidates were
present from Europe including three from Kenya. An Honorary
Fellowship was presented to Simon Gambold from the United
Kingdom and a Master of the ICD was presented to Kenneth
Judy from the United States. During the Induction each new
inductee’s curriculum vitae is read aloud prior to acceptance
into the ICD. This event in the Examination Hall of Trinity
College in Dublin was impressive as usual and was followed
by a formal seated dinner for over 300 at the Royal Hospital
at Killmainham. Of note, over 50% of the inductees had
substantial commitments to practicing or teaching oral
implantology/implant dentistry. A very promising future
for our special area of practice.
