Dynamic security
8
The security requirements placed upon contactless systems are
increasing incessantly. In this regard, security is a dynamic process, not a product or system feature. Our aim is to constantly
enhance our technology to provide clients with a holistic security philosophy, built on the basic principles of evolution, isolation
and combination.
As part of this process we recently launched new Master-Token
types based on transponders certified under the internationally
recognised «Common Criteria» standard. Each of them establishes a new Master-Token Zone isolated from the other Zones by
a sort of «Firewall». In this way, where necessary, older MasterToken Zones can be excluded, thus increasing security. Learn
more about this completely new and unique concept in the
article on page 22.

It was decided to implement a
certified SAP sub-system from
Kaba for time & attendance and
access control. At the same time,
a company-wide card system was
introduced. The areas for which
employees use the new LEGIC
ID are: time & attendance, access control, in the canteen, at
food and clothing distributors.
Kaba time & attendance terminals
were installed everywhere and
then 10,000 old cards were ex
changed for the new LEGIC ID
card. A further 10,000 cards were
then given to sub-contractors and
visitors.
With around 3500 beds, 260 day
clinic places and 9500 employees,
the Klinikum Munich, resulting
from the merger of five clinics, is
the biggest health service provider in southern Germany, today.
As part of the centralisation operation of the five hospitals, a central SAP system was implemented.

At the same time, new regula
tions were put in place regarding
the use and payment of the catering facilities in the entire hospital. The Munich-based company
Automaten Seitz implemented a
cashless payment system (EC
machine). Old cash register PCs
and distributors were replaced.
Now, employees, outside staff,
visitors, interns, etc., can eat in
any of the hospital’s five canteens without using cash.

Daniel Wolf from the Städtischen Klinikum,
adds: «We have a certified sub-system for
time & attendance and access control
which is fully integrated in SAP and very
stable. Overall, we are very satisfied with
the system.»

Access control was also extended. In order to be able to cover
new requirements for flexible
access profiles, the Kaba Attendance Management module was
implemented. All employee authorisations will be taken care of
centrally with this module. Central access control regulates, on
all premises, access to underground garages or open parking
spaces, canteen entry and entry
to particularly sensitive areas (laboratories, computer rooms, etc.).
The data centre, which requires
particular protection, is secured

Rondo Ganahl, international specialist in paper,
recycling and cardboard packaging, relies on LEGIC.
A new access solution using LEGIC technology was inst

The entire access control concept included the cardboard
factory and paper factory in Frastanz, as well as the plant
in St. Ruprecht and the operation in Romania.

At the headquarters in Frastanz
(Austria), Rondo Ganahl AG
produces around 110,000 tonnes of paper and 150 million
square metres of cardboard
per year. A new access solution using LEGIC technology was
installed by Gantner for around
300 employees on the Frastanz
site. The access control concept
includes the cardboard factory
and the paper factory in Frastanz, as well as the cardboard
plant in St. Ruprecht, which has
around 200 employees. To allow access rights to be managed centrally, the system was
converted to Gantner software.

The Romanian operation was
equipped with a Gantner system by a local partner. The individual premises can mostly administrate the system themselves; for certain requirements,
central multi-site authorisations
are possible. In Frastanz, St. Rup
recht and Romania, staff time &
attendance is recorded with
Gantner terminals.
1

In order to be able to cover
the individual sites, Gantner
established a multi GAT manager system, whereby each site
has its own software, which is
interconnected. In this way,
central authorisations are possible, but in the event of network failures, local functions
are all secured.
Access to the premises in Frastanz has been secured with a
barrier or turnstile, which is con
trolled with LEGIC cards. To
provide a quicker entrance and
exit for trucks, fork-lift trucks
10
and personal vehicles, an RFID
long-range solution was developed, with which authorised
vehicles are recognised on their
approach and the barriers or
entrance door are then automatically opened.
The building control system is
also new. It controls all doors
and barriers at a glance, and it is
also connected to the alarm
system. With a push of a button, an analysis of all employees on the premises can be
made.

A Smartcard Booster at the Swiss Post Office makes
access control more efficient
LEGIC employee cards play a central role in the new security solution of the Swiss Post Office. By means of vehicle
identification systems from Nedap and thanks to Smartcard

also used to control vehicles in the goods-in bay.
With a turnover of 721 million
CHF (2009) and 44,803 employees, the Swiss Post Office is
the biggest services company in
Switzerland. In recent years, the
company has invested a lot in
modernising the way it proces

and access is of the utmost importance. In the centre of the
new security solution, which was
tested with different testing systems and pilot projects, is the

Especially for LEGIC users, the M3 Orange MDE terminal is now also available with LEGIC technology.
This new iDTRONIC development is based on the new
LEGIC SM-4200 reader module and supports all LEGIC

writing/reading range, the M3 Orange MDE terminal is
very comfortable to use. Thanks to this iDTRONIC
development, many LEGIC users now have the option
of extending their use into the area of mobile data
acquisition.
These terminals can now also be used for biometric
checks (combination ID card and finger print). Thus
companies can benefit from these checks' advantages: enhanced security and unlimited user numbers.
Additionally, there is no conflict with data protection
requirements as each user takes «their identity» with
them and the fingerprint templates are not stored centrally. These terminals can be easily added to existing
LEGIC systems.

The security requirements placed on contactless systems
are constantly increasing. That is why we have a permanent
obligation to enhance the security of the LEGIC advant
platform through new characteristics. For years, existing
LEGIC advant technology has been fitted with advanced
and pioneering security mechanisms. It is now being enhanced with further security elements. LEGIC is introducing
new Master-Token types based on certified transponders
under the internationally recognised «Common Criteria»
standard. These new Master-Token types define individual
new Master-Token Zones that are isolated from other
zones using «firewalls».

forms its own Master-Token Zone.
LEGIC Master-Token System Control
The patented LEGIC Master-Token System Control, unique in the
industry to date, is the most important security element in the
LEGIC advant platform. It makes it possible to control the security
and contactless smart card applications without passwords. This is
where the strength of the Master-Token System becomes apparent.
There is a security facility operating authority that conducts actual
controls on cards, readers and the security of the smart card system.
No passwords are needed for the Master-Token System Control.
The LEGIC Master-Token is a special contactless smart card which,
instead of a password, contains a specific genetic code. This code
ensures a secure link between the cards and the readers.

Certified Hardware
In addition to the long-standing
Master-Token type there will now
be two further types using certified hardware. Each of these
three Master-Token types forms
an independent, closed MasterToken Zone: Zones A, B and C.
Zone B's Master-Token is based
on EAL5+, while Zone C’s is
based on EAL4+ certified hardware, in line with the Common
Criteria.

Compatible with All User
Credentials
As has been the case until now,
new Master-Tokens can also be
used to create applications on all
LEGIC advant based user credentials. This enables speedy and
straight-forward conversion to the
latest generation of technology.
The forward-looking use of new
Master-Tokens and the innovative Zone Concept have set new
standards in the technological
leadership of LEGIC advant tech
nology.
Master-Token Zones
A Master-Token Zone contains a
Master-Token and its Sub Master-Token, application data on the
user credentials and access
rights in the reader. The zone’s
origin can be read from any of
these elements and, thus, traced
back to the Master-Token. Using
a simple reader configuration it is
possible to authorise or exclude
individual Master-Token Zones.
In this way, for example, older
Master-Token Zones can be excluded, further increasing system security.
