Cut Your Energy Costs: Plant a Tree
The US Forest Service
says that trees properly placed around
buildings can reduce
air conditioning needs
by 30 percent and
can save 20-50 percent in energy used
for heating.
Looking for an easy
way to increase your
home’s appeal,
energy efficiency and
value? Plant a tree.
Trees improve air
quality, prevent soil
erosion and provide a
safe harbor for birds.
Trees have also been
shown to reduce tension and create feelings of relaxation.
Always consider the
amount of sun your
yard gets throughout
the day and the tree’s
size and life expectancy.
Ask our business
sponsors at Nicholson
-Hardie for
help in finding the right
tree for your
yard.
Be A Sudie Williams School “Angel”
The Williams family
of Bluffview decided
to adopt the Sudie
Williams Elementary
School on Pomona.
They are working
with landscapers
to help improve
the school’s “curb
appeal”.
Reading just one hour a
week with a child, helps
the child progress faster
than they otherwise
might.
They are also looking
for more volunteers to
work with students as
part of DISD’s “Reading
Partners” program.
If you would like to
help with either of these
projects, email the
Williams’, at

Reduce Crime: Wave!
Did you know that something as simple
as a casual wave to friends and
neighbors while you are walking or
driving can reduce crime? It’s true.
The reasons make perfect sense
when you think about it.
The last thing a burglar, or any one
else up to no good, wants is to get
caught. If they think that you saw
them, and might identify them or their
car, they are less likely to commit a
crime in that area.
Also, a casual wave is a sign of
friendliness that creates a sense of
community. It has the added effect
of improving the mood of everyone
involved. So next time you are out and
about...wave!

Crime Statistics: Still Looking
Good for 2013
While various businesses on Lovers Lane
have endured plant thefts and car break ins,
Briarwood continues to have few incidents
reported to police.
Since June there was one report of yard
furniture stolen and two car side mirrors
taken and another car broken into and items
removed. There was also one instance of
identity theft and one domestic violence call.
BCW sometimes hears stories of unreported
thefts and incidents. Remember if the police
aren’t notified, then no one knows it
happened and no one is looking for the
perpetrator or your stuff!
Enhanced police patrols certainly play a vital
role in keeping crime at bay in Briarwood,
but an alert citizenry is our best line of
defense. See something? Say something!
