termthatisusedwhenJesusrepeatedlysaystheword‘forgive’means:

us!”ButtheotherrebukedHim,saying,“DoyounotfearGod,sinceyouareunderthesamesentenceof
condemna$on?Andweindeedjustly,forwearereceivingtheduerewardofourdeeds;butthismanhas
donenothingwrong.”Andhesaid,“Jesus,remembermewhenyoucomeintoyourkingdom.”AndHe
saidtohim,“Truly,Isaytoyou,todayyouwillbewithmeinparadise.”

ThesecondstatementofJesus’lastwordsdemonstratesforusthetaleoftwothievesandadividing
lineforallofeternity.AsJ.D.Greearexplains,
“ThestoryofthetwothievesonthecrossesnexttoJesusinLuke23showsthedividinglinein
eternity—twomeninverysimilarlifesitua@onsfallonoppositesidesofthislineandendup
eterni@esapart.Yourlifewillberepresentedinoneofthem.Thesetwoguyshadquiteabitin
common.Theywereequallybad.Thetextdoesn’tsayonewasworsethantheother.Infact,
Ma\hewtellsusthatbothstartedoutcursingJesus.Andbothcriminalswouldhavebeenhappy
forJesustosavethemfromdeath.”10 Itisamazinghowsomuchoflife,andeternityforthatma\er,willhingeonspecificmomentsinour
story.Andthesemomentsendupdeterminingalltheothermomentsofourlives.Inotherwords,there
aremomentsthatbecomedefiningmomentsforallofourlives.Thiswasonesuchmomentforthe
criminalonthecross.Whiletheeventsprecedingthecriminals’crucifixionareconjecture,many
historianshavespeculatedthattheywerefollowingafalsemessiahinBarabbas.Barabbaswasa
prisoner,arobber,andrevolu@onarywhowantedtooverthrowtheRomangovernmentatanycost.He
hadmostlikelycommi\edmurderinthenameofrevolu@onandwouldhavehadfollowersthatviewed
BarabbasasthemessiahoronewhowouldsaveandliberatetheJewishpeople.GovernorPilateoffered
achoice,whichwasconsistentwithacustomduringPassover,toreleaseaprisonertothecrowd.The
choicewasbetweenJesusandBarabbas;andtheresponseresoundswithbloodthirstyignoranceand
depravity:
Nowatthefeastthegovernorwasaccustomedtoreleaseforthecrowdanyoneprisonerwhom
theywanted.16AndtheyhadthenanotoriousprisonercalledBarabbas.17Sowhentheyhad
gathered,Pilatesaidtothem,“Whomdoyouwantmetoreleaseforyou:Barabbas,orJesus
whoiscalledChrist?”18Forheknewthatitwasoutofenvythattheyhaddeliveredhimup…
NowthechiefpriestsandtheelderspersuadedthecrowdtoaskforBarabbasanddestroyJesus.
