Why is Angie’s List requiring a criminal
background check?
Because it just makes sense:

healthcare services.
• Our members expect the best from the highly rated service providers on Angie’s List and demand
increasingly more information, including criminal background checks, on the service providers with
whom they do business.
• Service providers have long requested more ways to differentiate themselves from their competitors.
By showing that you passed a criminal background check, you will enter into a more exclusive group
from which members can choose.
Who is running the background check?
The background check currently is performed by American Business Services (ABS), a third-party screening
company. Upon processing the check, ABS will provide Angie’s List with a simple “pass” or “fail” designation.
Angie’s List and its members will never see any content from background check results.

How does an individual fail the background check?
A failed background check is one that finds one or more of the following:
• Any violent or theft conviction at a felony level in the last 7 years
• Any sexual felony conviction or on a sexual offender registry at any time (no time limit)
• Any pending felony charges involving any of the two types above
Remember, ABS will provide Angie’s List with only a pass or fail designation. Any individual that fails a
background check will be notified by email from a representative at Angie’s List.
Who is required to complete a background check?
Angie’s List will require a background check on the owner, relevant manager or principal of the business
organization appearing on Angie’s List. Service providers will not be eligible to advertise, promote ecommerce
deals, or become eligible for the 2013 Super Service Award unless they authorize and pass a background check.
Remember, Angie’s List will not receive this specific information, as the results only communicate a pass or fail
status of the individual. Any individual that fails a background check will be notified by email from a
representative at Angie’s List.
