Bullfrog Bytes (small bits of information, in an electronic format, about what’s been happening in Lake Worth ISD) Volume 1, Special Edition Homecoming 2013 Homecoming Celebrations Lake Worth High School celebrated Homecoming the week of September 16-20, 2013. The week kicked-off with a Parade that started in front of the district’s administration building, then made its way through the adjoining Indian Oaks neighborhood to end in front of Effie Morris Elementary School – almost back where it started. The district has not held a Homecoming Parade for several years, and the last few parades that did occur traveled the very short distance from the Kohl’s parking lot to the parking lot of Lake Worth High School. The chief organizer of this year’s parade was Mary Coker, a counselor at Lake Worth High School. Mrs. Coker made the following statement about the parade: “I thought the parade was a great success, especially for the first year to return to a large scale parade. Someone said it had been about 9 years since they had a parade other than the Kohl’s route. There was such a high level of interest from the community that we felt it was important to try to put it back into place. I graduated from LWHS back in 1983 and I can still remember participating in parades from school. This event was a way to carry on a local tradition and to involve the entire community. We actually started meeting and talking about the parade back in July and met with the city representatives several times. Dr. Fitts was extremely supportive, and was present at each and every meeting even though he was starting a brand new job and had many other irons in the fire. Jeff Thomas and his department were amazing. They supplied the manpower for much of the logistical details. Several of the floats were really cute. I am looking forward to next year’s parade.” Page 2 Other Lake Bullfrog Bytes Worth ISD “campuses” participated in the parade from Tadpole Learning Center, which offers care for preschool-aged children of staff and students, through the traditionally graded campuses (elementary, intermediate, and middle schools) to Marine Creek Collegiate High School, where students can earn high school diplomas and an Associate’s Degree simultaneously. Page 3 Bullfrog Bytes Several community members and area organizations took part in the parade to show their support of the Lake Worth Bullfrogs. Local dignitaries Tarrant County Commissioner J. D. Johnson and Lake Worth Mayor Walter Bowen shared a ride on a convertible Mercedes. Also of note was the presence of Mrs. Janice Miller who retired from Lake Worth ISD after serving as a kindergarten teacher at and then principal of Effie Morris Elementary School. In 2006, the Board of Trustees recognized Mrs. Miller’s dedication to the students of Lake Worth by naming Marilyn Janice Miller Elementary School in her honor. In addition to Mrs. Miller’s bright yellow Roadster, other easily recognizable vehicles were entered by the LW Police Department, the LW Fire Department, and the LWISD Transportation Department. Local Cub Scout Pack 319 entered a float, and it took several floats to carry the various participants from the Lake Worth Youth Association including multiple age groups of football players and cheerleaders. The Lake Worth Laugh Makers, a group from the clown ministry at Fellowship of Lake Worth walked in the parade and provided balloon creations for spectators. Page 4 Bullfrog Bytes Immediately following the parade, a community pep rally was held in the horseshoe drive behind Effie Morris Elementary School. Dr. David Fitts, Superintendent for Lake Worth ISD, and Mr. Mike Ellis, Principal of Lake Worth High School greeted the gathered crowd, thanking the community for their support of the district, the high school, and Bullfrog football. The pep rally continued with cheers led by cheerleaders from the Lake Worth Youth Association, from Lucyle Collins Middle School, and from Lake Worth High School. Rounding out the festivities were performances by the Bullfrog Marching Band and the Lake Worth High School flag corps. Page 5 Bullfrog Bytes Throughout homecoming week, students (and even teachers) showed their school spirit and supported the Bullfrogs with a series of “dress-up” days. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Friday Thursday Page 6 Bullfrog Bytes Homecoming Week 2013 came to conclusion with the varsity game on Friday, September 20 at Kittrell Stadium when the Bullfrogs hosted the Eagles from Hillsboro High School. During the half-time break, the Sweethearts and Beaus representing Lake Worth High School student organizations were presented. Afterward, the Homecoming Court was introduced to the assembled spectators. Senior Shirley Richardson was revealed as the choice of the student body to be crowned 2013 LWHS Homecoming Queen. The Bullfrogs and Eagles returned to the field to play the second half of their game and bring Lake Worth High School’s homecoming to a final end. The week which started with great community support during the long-absent tradition of the Homecoming Parade ended with a Bullfrog victory 0f 48 to 21! To paraphrase Mrs. Coker from page 1, Bullfrogs and their fans are looking forward to next year’s Homecoming. Go Bullfrogs!
