GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Participial Phrases (5-6 minutes) Description: Participial phrases are phrases composed of a participle and its object (object of the participle). It functions as an adjective describing the subject of the main clause. Ex. Hearing the announcement, the passengers hurry to enter the departure gate. (Participial phrase = participle + object of the participle) Subject - being modified by the participial phrase There are two types of participial phrases: 1. Present participial phrase - This is made up of a present participle and its object. A present participle is formed by adding the suffix -ing to regular action verbs. Ex. Checking their passport, the immigration officer allows the passengers to travel. 2. Past participial phrase - This is made up of a past participle and its object. A past participle is formed by adding the suffix –ed to regular action verbs. Ex. Sam, worried he lost his passport, searched through all his things. The object of the participle normally answers the questions what, when, where, and why. Remember: Participial phrases may appear at the beginning or the end of a sentence. A comma should always be used to separate these phrases from the main clause. Examples: Present Participial Phrase Locating the departure gate, the couple walked hurriedly. The man became anxious, knowing the flight will be delayed. Past Participial Phrase The memo, attached to the flight schedule, indicated a possible change. She walked towards the gate, relieved that the plane is arriving soon.
