CALENDAR! This message goes out to everyone who is eagerly
awaiting the start of spring and is feeling the need to
warm up. Personally, I am not a big fan of the
winter, and I really hate the cold, and that's why I
am grateful that the WOFA Dance Company, our
West African Dancers and Drummers, is performing
in just two weeks. If you leave the theater after a
WOFA show feeling at all cold, please seek medical
help immediately!
As for this weekend, if you are fan of musical
theater, science fiction, horror movies, comedy,
dance, and puppetry, then be sure to get to PVPA for
the closing weekend of Little Shop of Horrors. I can
say with complete confidence that you will really
enjoy every aspect of this show tech, acting,
singing, dancing, and musicianship. And, unlike any
other other PVPA musical, it's only two hours long!
Even hard core Super Bowl fans from all over the
Pioneer Valley can accompany their theaterloving
family members to the Sunday matinee and be home
in plenty of time for the start of the game. So PVPA
friends and families, reserve your tickets and
transport yourself into the creepiest and most iconic
floral shop in the musical theater canon.
Yay for PVPA!

Introducing PVPA's New
Website!
After months of planning, and the tireless efforts of
our IT Coordinator, Thom Vreeland, PVPA is
launching our new website! www.pvpa.org. Watch
for a video tour soon of the new site which Thom is
creating. It will be sent out either as a separate e
mail, or in a link in next week's Friday Notes. In the
meantime, feel free to check out the site. Almost all
content from the old site has been transferred over
to the new one. Parents can find the links they use
most by scrolling down to the "Parent" Quick Link. As
with anything new, it will take some getting used to
and we will tweak things as we need to. Thanks for
your patience! And if you see Thom, thank him for
his hard work!
National School Counseling
Week
PVPA's School Counseling Department is excited to
celebrate National School Counseling Week,
sponsored by the American School Counselor
Association (ASCA), from Feb. 610, 2017. We'll be
joining more than 100,000 school counselors
nationwide in acknowledging our unique role in
helping students achieve school success, build
resilience, and plan for college and careers.
The profession of school counseling is nearly 100
years old, however, it has changed a great deal even
in the past 15 years. We'd like to take this opportunity to share some
information about the scope of our work. We
encourage everyone to visit the following links to
learn more about the role of school counselors. More
importantly, we welcome questions from anyone in
our school community! This Is Not Your Grandparent's School Counselor is
an article for anyone who has ever rolled their eyes
when someone says the words "guidance
counselor." Why Middle School Counselors? and Why Secondary
School Counselors? give a brief explanation of the
scope of school counseling at the middle and high
school levels. For those who prefer videos, here's What Does A
School Counselor Do?
Enjoy, and please feel free to be in touch with us! Dee Cullen, Middle School Counselor

DEL at Leeds Elementary
School
Students from the Dance Education Laboratory (DEL)
program from PVPA spent their Paideia time in
residence at the Leeds Elementary School for an
intensive choreography and teen leadership project.
Entering it's 6th year DEL's goal is to train PVPA's
middle school and high school dancers to lead dance
and choreography workshops in local Elementary
schools. PVPA dancers learn the fundamentals of
teaching dance to young children based on the DEL
teacher training model from NYC which was co
founded by Ann Biddle, Director of Arts at PVPA. This
program was designed to help middle and high
students broaden their understanding of dance and
dance education while acting as mentors and role
models for younger students. This unique
combination of community service, mentoring,
collaborative teaching and learning has proven to be
highly successful with both the PVPA students and
their younger mentees. PVPA DEL has worked in
many local schools in Northampton, Amherst,
Chicopee, South Hadley, and Holyoke.
Over 120 Leeds students (grades 3rd 5th), 36 PVPA
dance mentors and PVPA faculty, were involved in
this dynamic choreography project. DEL faculty
include Ann Biddle, Shakia Johnson and Remy
FernandezO'Brien. Students collaborated on dances
inspired by themes drawn for the Leeds curriculum:
Native American folktales, poetry of Maya Angelou
and the ABC's of Hip Hop. Culminating performances
were on Wednesday & Thursday, January 25th and
26th at the Leeds School.
For more information about the Dance Education
Laboratory, please contact Ann Biddle at
[email protected].

COLLEGE CORNER! It's Financial Aid Time! It's never too early to begin looking for
scholarships. Remember to check PVPA's
updated scholarships pagesome deadlines are
coming up soon! Most students will need to complete the FAFSA (Free
Application for Federal Student Aid).
To begin filling out the FAFSA, students need to set
up a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID). To set up
your FSA ID, follow this link. Students and families can access the FAFSA here.
You'll be using tax information from your 2015 tax
return. Want some help filling out the FAFSA? Attend a
Massachusetts FAFSA Day! More information
is here. Some colleges require the CSS (College Search
Service) profile in addition to the FAFSA. You can
access the CSS Profile here. Box Tops for Education!
Box tops can be found on everyday products you
may already be purchasing for your household. Each
box top is worth 10 cents. All you need to do is clip
them and send them in to PVPA! They add up quickly
and we can use the funds to help purchase needed
items for the new theater. Last year we raised
$87.50. This year's goal is $500! Help us reach it!
