PDF - SJI International

13 January 2017 SJI International Newsletter
Term 1 - Issue 1
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
This year is a celebration for SJI International as we reach our 10th Birthday! We give thanks to our
Founders who had the vision to create our wonderful school. The 2017 Academic Year has again started
on the B of BANG! Our students are immediately back into Season 2 of the ACSIS Sports competition,
with 7 fixtures taking place in Week 1.
As you receive this newsletter I will be arriving in a bitterly cold London, where I (and Mrs Amy Lee) am
attending the Teacher Recruitment Fair, run by Search Associates. This fair involves over 100 schools and
about 600 teachers.
This week’s newsletter includes the following: a collage of the 2016 Graduation Ceremony; an
introduction to the new members of our teaching team; celebration of our top achieving IB
Diploma students; a reminder about the procedure to follow if your child is absent from school; the
names and email addresses of the Pastoral Team (including Heads of Grade and all Tutors); two
student Field Trips from the end of 2016; and Sports Results for the past week and finally upcoming
Sports Fixtures.
Welcome to Our New Teachers
I would like to welcome all the new members of the SJI International teaching team. Please see a short
introduction to each of our new team members in the body of today’s newsletter.
Celebrating Our Excellent IB Diploma Results
As detailed in the letter sent to all parents last week, the Class of 2016 has again done very well in the IB
Diploma examinations. Highlights were:
 Biggest cohort ever - 185 students
 Average score of 37.0 points (3rd highest out of our 8 cohorts)
 30.8% of students achieved 40 points or more
These results place us as one of the highest achieving international schools in
Singapore.
Please see the names and photos of
the top achieving students in the body
of today’s newsletter.

Important Dates
Reminder about School Timings
I would like to remind all parents about our school timings.
Starting Time of School (unless otherwise notified during special occasions)
Monday mornings
School starts at 08:00 hrs
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings
School starts at 08:05 hrs
Friday mornings
School starts at 08:55 hrs
School ends at 15:00 hrs every day (unless otherwise notified during special occasions).
Mass is held every Friday morning, starting at 07:45 hrs.
Please see the very important Process to follow if your child is absent notice, in the body of this week’s
newsletter.
Activity Programme for Term 1
The official Activity Programme for Term 1 of 2017 starts on Monday, 6 February, with the sign-up for
activities opening on Thursday, 19 January. As informed last term, payment for all Paid Activities will take
place through our new RedDot system – via credit card. We will be sending all parents details about the
activities and process for registration next week.
Advanced Warning about Days with Special Timings
Late Start of School on Wednesday, 1 February:
School will only start at 08:55 hrs on Wednesday, 1 February (first day after the Chinese New Year Long
Weekend - which includes Tuesday, 31 January). On Wednesday, 1 February, we will be using this
Enrichment Period time for a special training session for teachers. We have been fortunate to invite Sir
John Jones to address all High School and Elementary School teachers. Lessons will follow the normal
Wednesday timetable. We will remind parents again, closer to the time.
Make-Up Curriculum Days:
Each year, due to public holidays and school events (such as Founder's Day and Sports Day), certain days
of the week– and as a result, classes taught on these days– are impacted more often than others. This
year sees Monday, Wednesday and Friday being hit the hardest, while Thursday is almost never
impacted.
To address this imbalance, we will be running either a Monday, Wednesday or Friday curriculum day on 4
different Thursdays. This will have no impact on the starting and ending times of classes, but will impact
the books your child will need to bring. We will highlight these dates prior to each event in the weekly
Newsletter. The following are the planned changes:
Thursday, 2 February, will follow a Monday [Week B] timetable
Thursday, 30 March, will follow a Monday [Week B] timetable
Thursday, 18 May, will follow a Wednesday [Week A] timetable
Thursday, 24 August, will follow a Friday [Week B] timetable
Reminder about Drop-off Area for High School
A very big thank you to all parents who have continued to use the Drop-Off and Pick-Up area located on
Toa Payoh West Road. Please do not use the main Thomson Road entrance.

Service Learning and Activities Fairs and Auditions
As we start the new academic year, students are required to sign up for both Service Learning Projects,
Sports and Activities.
To facilitate this we will be hosting a Service Fair (for all Grade 10 to Grade 12 students) on Wednesday,
18 February, and an Activity and Sports Fair (for all Grade 7 to 12 students) on Thursday, 19 February.
Both of these Fairs will take place in the Assembly Hall, running from 15:15 to 17:30 hrs on each
afternoon.
Please encourage your children to attend these Fairs to find out more about the various Service and
Activity options available in 2017.
We are also holding Auditions for this year’s production (Grimm Tales). Auditions for Grade 10 to 12
students take place on Monday, 16 February, while Auditions for Grade 7 to 9 students take place on
Wednesday, 18 February. Auditions run from 15:15 to 17:00 hrs on each day (Venue = Drama Black
Box).
SSSC Individual Sports
On Wednesday morning, at our first Assembly of the year, all students were given the
following very important announcement about SSSC Individual Sports:
Any students hoping to participate in an Individual Sports through the Singapore Schools Sports Council
(SSSC) must see Mr Bergeron or Ms Fe as soon as possible – they are located on the 4th Floor of the main
High School block, in the Senior School Office. It is vital that you inform the school of your intention, as
we are required to send a teacher to the respective individual SSSC meeting, if we plan to enter students.
Reminder about our Policy for individual sports:
As a school, SJI International always strives to support individual students who wish to participate in
National competitions.
Although we facilitate entry into all Individual SSSC Sports (e.g. Taekwondo, Aikido, Shooting, Fencing,
Sailing, Golf, etc.), all costs associated with entry and participation are paid by parents. These costs include
both the entry costs and the cost of staff supervision (a requirement of SSSC - we are required to send one
or 2 staff with each group). The cost of staffing is split between all students participating, therefore, this
cost will be higher if only a small number of students are involved.
Please email Mr Mark Bergeron, the Head of Sports ([email protected]) should you
require any additional information.
1-to-1 Laptop Programme
As you are all aware, we have introduced a 1-to-1 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Programme this year. All
students (Grade 7 to 12) are required to bring a laptop to school. I would like to remind all parents about
the following important requirements:
i)
ii)
iii)
All students must have a laptop for every lesson;
Students must arrive at school with a fully charged device;
All devices should ideally have a battery life of at least 8 hours.
Parallel to the introduction of the 1-to-1 programme, we have also informed students about the following
‘Rules’:
a)
Grades 7 and 8 students MAY NOT use their laptops during Break or Lunch.
b)
Grades 9 to 12 are allowed to use their laptops, but only for school work (no games or videos
allowed).
3
We have also informed all students that we will be monitoring their use of mobile devices. Again,
students should not be using these for games, videos or non-educational activities. As a school, where
students will be using devices in most classes, we believe that it is vital students have some times in the
day without being glued to screens. Instead, we are encouraging our students to use Break and Lunch as a
time for quality face-to-face communication. As you will appreciate, this change is probably not the most
popular of policies – but we are very sure it is the right policy for our school. Please note, we have not
banned mobile phones and you are still able to communicate with your children as normal. (Not during
lesson time of course).
Badminton and Tennis Trials
Will be taking place on the following days next week:
January 17 - 19u Girls Badminton
January 18 - 19u Boys Badminton
January 17 - U14 Girls Tennis
January 19 - U14 Boys Tennis
3:15-4:15 pm - Indoor Sports Hall
3:15-4:15 pm - Indoor Sports Hall
4:30-6:00 pm - Tennis Courts
4:30-6:00 pm - Tennis Courts
Enhanced Student Medical Accident Plan
As we did in 2016, the school has arranged for parents to purchase an enhanced Student Medical
Accident Plan for $26.75 per child (for the year). This scheme is underwritten by Lonpac Insurance Bhd
and administered by AB Lim Pte Ltd. It supplements the Basic Plan already provided by the school. Please
see the letter attached to this email for more details.
The insurance representative will be in school next week on Wednesday 18 January and Friday 20
February from 15:00 to 16:00 hrs – and will be located in the Conference Room (next to the High School
Security Office). They have advised it would be best if parents can issue cheques instead of paying cash.
The payee will be "AB Lim Pte Ltd".
In Closing
Finally, I would like to welcome you all back after the break, and I especially welcome all the new
members of the SJI International community. We start 2017 with the school filled to its capacity at 1039
students – almost identical to 2016 (we will remain at this size for the next few years). Due to the
reduction of class size in Grade 7 and 8, these two Year Groups now have 7 Tutor Groups.
I am very excited about the coming year and know that 2017 will be another
‘best year ever’.
Wishing you all a very Happy New Year!
Yours Sincerely
Bradley Roberts

New Staff
Katie Collins - Teacher of Psychology
Katie is joining the school from the UK where she gained her
Psychology and Masters degrees. She is passionate about her
subject, specifically Positive Psychology and Mental Health.
She volunteered for many years with Mind, a mental health charity in
the UK, working with service users who suffer from severe mental
illnesses. Her understanding of Psychology also led to her work with children with special learning needs. Katie feels that the compassion and
patience that she has learned through these roles have contributed to
her success as a teacher of Psychology.
Fuelled by her interest in different people, communities and cultures, Katie enjoys travelling and has
recently returned from a two-month trip around South America where she loved learning about
everything from the Incas to the Galapagos giant tortoises!
Drew Thomas - Teacher of History
Drew is originally from South Wales in the UK. He has a BA and MA in History
from Swansea University. He has taught in the UK where he worked at
Chepstow Comprehensive and has also spent time working in South Korea. He
is passionate about humanities subjects and their potential to challenge
preconceptions and give learners an insight into past and present societies.
Drew loves sports, particularly football, as well as cooking and eating great
food. He is married to another member of staff at SJI International: Learning
Development teacher Cara Love.
Oliver Millar - Teacher of Geography
Oliver is from the UK, where he graduated with a Geography degree before
training to become a teacher. After a couple of years of teaching in the UK, he
decided to pursue his passion for Geography and the wider world so he moved to
Thailand to teach. Since that relocation, he has never looked back and has held
various teaching posts in the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar. With the Middle East out of
his system, he and his wife (a fellow Geography teacher) look forward to
exploring Singapore.
As a keen adventurer, sportsman and Tiddly-winks enthusiast, he enjoys new experiences and meeting
new people.
Angelina Trueman - Teacher of English
Angelina is Singaporean, and graduated from NUS with an MA in English
Literature. She has just returned from teaching for fourteen years in the UK,
where she was a Key Stage 4 Coordinator. Angelina also led a team in the
local GCSE Literature exams for AQA, an English examination board; and in an
AS level composition paper Internal Examinations, where she held the
position of Principal Examiner for the last eight years.
She has come back to Singapore with her husband, and they have two
children studying at UK universities, in Durham and Hull. In their spare time, the family enjoys travelling
around different parts of the world, having a particular passion for the variety of South Africa's
immense landscape; and for the austere and spiritual beauty of the tiny land of Israel.
9
Pilar Chavez - Part-Time Teacher of Spanish
Pilar is originally from Spain, where she got her degree in Special Education. In
her endeavour to embrace new cultures, she moved to Sweden and lived
there for 5 years. While living in Sweden, she worked as teacher of Spanish in
an international Montessori school where she discovered the passion of
teaching her mother tongue and culture to locals and children from other
countries.
Before coming to Singapore, she pursued one of her main passions: travelling. For 6 months she
discovered the beauty of Southeast Asian countries.
Bianca Ward - Middle School Maths and Science
Bianca is from Cape Town, South Africa. She completed her Education degree
majoring in Maths and Science at the University of Stellenbosch. She always
knew that she wanted to become a teacher and taught in Dubai for a couple of
years before making her way over to Singapore. She looks forward to
making a worthwhile contribution to SJI International.
Bianca enjoys travelling and cannot wait to explore more of Asia. Her other
hobbies include horse riding and hiking. Her favourite hike is heading up to the top of Table
Mountain where the view is just incredible.
Audrey Wu - Teacher of Chinese
Audrey completed her Education degree in China. A passionate educator, she
is experienced in teaching students of different competency levels, ranging
from Foreign Language to First Language and IB DP.
Audrey enjoys reading and cooking Chinese cuisine. When she is not teaching,
she spends quality time with her husband and nine-month-old daughter.
Pushpa Pandey - Teacher of Chemistry
Pushpa is of Indian/German background and has worked in international
schools around the world for most of her teaching career. She has taught in
schools in Switzerland, Hong Kong, India, Australia and Singapore. Even after
20+ years of teaching she remains passionate about working with students,
teaching them about Chemistry and Science.
10
Gao Zhenguo (Tony) - Teacher of Chinese
GAO Zhenguo is from China and graduated with a B.A. in Teaching Chinese as
a Second Language from Yunnan University, China. Over a number of years,
he has taught the Chinese language in China, Thailand, and now, Singapore. During his time in China and Thailand, he also worked as University lecturer (Chinese language) and high school language teacher.
As a professional educator, he always believes that teachers should be able
to understand students’ psychological problems in learning at different stages
and develop strategies to improve their situations.
Shelley Barton - Teacher of Mathematics and Theory of Knowledge
Shelley is from Canada and has degrees in Mathematics, Education and
Counselling. She is currently working on a degree in Mathematics curriculum,
where Shelley is investigating the connection between the philosophy
and practice. The joy and energy that comes from exploring
ideas while surrounded by students and colleagues who enjoy
learning
keeps
Shelley
motivated
to
continue
studying.
Shelley has taught in Canada, Switzerland, Pakistan and Hong Kong. Each
opportunity has broadened her world view and she is looking forward to experiencing Singapore.

Experiential Learning @ Kampong
Glam Grade 7 Malay & Indonesian
Students
Tuesday, 29 November 2016
3:15 pm – 5:30 pm
The trip to Kampong Glam was extremely eye opening. Not only did it teach me more of Singapore’s
past, it also taught me more about the Malay culture.
Visiting Masjid Sultan and eating the traditional
Malay food helped me see a different side of
Singapore I never knew. The experience was also very
enjoyable, as Cikgu Su’ad made the activities
interesting and fun, which helped us stretch our
knowledge even further in the Malay/Indonesian
language.
Safira Meacham
The trip to Kampong Glam was very fun.
We were able to see some historic buildings and
artefacts as well as read and hear about the
Malay History.
We also ate some food and drank some drinks
like Bandung. We ate this cracker that was dry
and crunchy. I had a lot of fun and I learnt more
things.

Experiential Learning @ Kampong Glam
Grade 8 Malay & Indonesian Students
Thursday, 24 November 2016
My friends and I went to Kampong Glam to learn about its history
and visited some interesting places like Masjid Sultan and heritage sites. We also bought and tasted the food and drinks there
which were good. We were lucky because there were not many
people who were visiting Kampong Glam that morning, so we
could go to the other places quickly. This is a fun experience. I also
learned about Kampong Glam and can now share information
with my friends.
Russell Robleado
On 24 November 2016, our Indonesian / Malay class went on a
field trip to Kampong Glam to learn about the Malay heritage.
During the trip, we went to four different places. We went to
Kampong Glam Cafe, Masjid Sultan, Rumah Makan Minang and
Malay Heritage Centre. At Kampong Glam Cafe and Rumah
Makan Minang I experienced ordering food in a new and different
society. At the Malay Heritage Centre, I learned about the region’s
first newspaper. Finally in Masjid Sultan, I learned about the Sultan who used to live there and how many people could fit in the
Sultan Mosque. Overall I think that it is a fantastic educational
trip. Shafi Borhan

Lasallian Reflection
Br Lawrence Humphrey
“Act in such a way through your zeal that you give tangible proof
that you love those whom God has entrusted to you.”
(St John Baptist de La Salle, Ninth Meditation for the Time of Retreat)
How many of us can remember our 10th birthday? I cannot. But whether we celebrate this year the first or second, or the fifth or sixth decade of our life, a decade of ten years is noteworthy.
St Joseph’s Institutional International opened its doors to its first students only 10 years ago this month, on 7th
January 2007. The first high school classes were held in what is now the Raphael block of the Elementary
School. With 104 students and 14 teaching staff, led by Br Michael Broughton, the first Brother President, and
Mr Andrew Bennett, the founding principal, our school was born. The Elementary School would open one year
later when the High School moved into the current HS buildings.
In 2006 SJI International was just a dream. Mr Lawrence da Silva, for whom our Sports Hall is named, along with
a committed group of SJI Old Boys, inspired and cajoled others, including the De La Salle Brothers, to work
together to make this dream a reality. They were risk takers and men of faith. The school they founded was and
is a wonderful reflection of the vision of St John Baptist de La Salle, offering clear and tangible proof of their love
for young people which extends to our students today. In every way possible, it seems to me that SJI
International demonstrates a kind of care for students that is tangible, that we can see and touch. This is
confirmed every day in conversations I have with students and parents who are so enthusiastic about their SJI
International experiences.
Although the students in the first High School classes have already graduated, among the current student body
we have seventeen students who entered the Elementary School in 2008. We are likewise blessed to have
several members of the original teaching and administrative staff still on board today. Over the next eighteen
months or so, there will be numerous observances and celebrations of our 10th birthday that will include all
members of the school community. Next Friday evening, 20 January, we will pay special tribute to our School
Founders.
SJI International has grown tremendously in these first ten years, with a combined enrolment today of 1700
students. I suspect that the success of our school may have surpassed even the expectations of our founders.
But their vision of an international school with a Catholic ethos and Lasallian mission, that would bring together
young people from Singapore and the world (today our students come from some 40 countries), is now well
established in our community. And our outreach to the last, the lost, and the least among us, through both the
service experiences of our students, and well as through the opportunities for an SJI International education
made possible because of our Scholars programme, is a part of the legacy our founders have passed on to us.
St John Baptist de La Salle used the words Faith and Zeal to best describe the spirit of the schools he envisioned.
In the Josephian schools of Singapore, we use the Latin words of our school motto, “Ora et Labora” (pray and
work) to similarly describe our faith and trust in God, who thus inspires our zealous commitment to the finest
young people of Singapore and the world. May God continue to bless and inspire all that we do.
