August 2012 Dear Parents,
CHANG We are pleased to have your child in our rooms this year. We will PELLECCHIA be sharing many exciting experiences. Each teacher will instruct
their class in language arts and math. Mrs. Chang is the team’s science teacher
and Mrs. Pellecchia is the team’s social studies teacher. The class will make
a special effort to improve writing skills this year. We'd like to share with you
some of the things that we'll be doing throughout the school year.
1. All children will keep a journal for each subject. We would like you to
prepare two sets of six 70-page spiral notebooks. The colors of the cover
page for each subject are: Reading (red), Writing (purple), Math (green),
Science (blue), Social Studies (yellow), and Inventions (black). Students will
record their valuable thoughts and learning experiences in these journals.
This written record of what they have achieved will be taken home
periodically to be shared with you and discussed during conferences.
2. Other school supplies include: 5 packets of post-it notes, pencils, crayons,
markers, highlighters, five different colored folders, one flat zipped pencil
holders, two rolls of scotch tape, one box of gallon-size ziplock bags, and
one box of Kleenex tissues.
3. For the Columbia Writing Program, we will take writing samples early on to
serve as benchmarks for each student. Throughout the school year, we will
continue to teach them strategies that help them revise and have them assess
their own progress. At the end of the year we will evaluate their
improvement as writers.
4. Children will learn many different forms of writing, including stories,
reports, poems, and science experiment observations and social studies
reports. They will also write in all subjects for different purposes: to ask for
information, to express feelings, and to summarize as well as evaluate what
they have learned. They will build strong vocabulary skills with the Ganske
spelling program and Vocabulary Workshop (more information will
follow.). They will study synonyms, antonyms, and apply effective
vocabulary to make their writing more descriptive.
5. Children will write for different audiences and in different subject areas. By
speaking to others through writing, they are acquiring a "voice," a sense of
an important author who has something important to say. They will build
their confidence, competence, and self-esteem.
6. We will talk about good writing and analyze good literature books we read.
Children will learn to revise by organizing their ideas and to edit their
writing to improve word usage, style, and mechanics. Certain selections will
go through several drafts as students polish their writing for publication in
some way.
We hope to assist your child in growing as a writer and enjoying the process of
writing while they learn across the curriculum. Let’s work closely to help your
child perform at the best potential and enjoy this precious and rewarding learning
experience.
Cordially Yours,
Mrs. Chang and Mrs. Pellecchia

Dear Fantastic Fifth Grader,
We are excited to welcome you back to school and can’t wait for you
to begin your journey as fantastic fifth graders!
This year you are part of
a dynamic team; I am your teacher for language arts, math, and science,
and Mrs. Winterstein is your social studies teacher.
We are happy and
honored to be your teachers for an exciting year of learning and growing.
As we begin our journey, we will venture to new places and discover
interesting characters through our various literary units.
In addition, we
will continue to improve our skills as authors as we focus on writing
techniques to develop meaningful personal narratives, memoirs, fiction stories,
and expository essays.
In addition, as mathematicians we will use many types of strategies
to help solve a variety of math problems.
Some units of study include place
value, algebraic thinking, fractions, probability, and geometry.
As scientists
we will explore mixtures and solutions, forces and motion, and
microorganisms to help us better understand the world around us.
Finally,
as historians we will focus on America’s story by understanding how the
Civil War, Great Depression, and Civil Rights Movement shaped 21st century
America.
The fifth grade curriculum is challenging, but exciting.
With your
parents, Mrs. Winterstein and I will work together as a team to help you
succeed as a learner and become a valued member of our classroom
community.

The first day of school is right around the corner, and I’m looking forward to
meeting you. There are a lot of exciting activities ahead. Our year starts out with
“Fourth Grade Record Breakers” Day. We have field trips, and class activities that
you will enjoy. We are going to create many fourth grade memories this year that you

I have had a very busy summer. I visited my daughter, Kristen, in Los Angeles,

art work. Kristen is the Assistant Director for Screen Writing School at the
University of Southern California where she graduated with her Masters Degree in
screen writing. She also is a professor there.
My younger daughter, Ashley, is a fashion designer. She works in New York
City. She loved her visit to China last spring where she was sent to select beautiful
silk fabrics for dresses. I am very proud of both my daughters. I’m sure that your
summer has been filled with wonderful adventures also. I am anxious to hear about all
of them.
If you are busy getting organized for the first day of school, the list below
contains suggestions for you. The list contains items that will be helpful for you to
have in school this year. Please be sure to put your name on each item that you bring
to school.

Up A GREAT Year!
Dear Boys and Girls,
Welcome to Millstone River Elementary School! I hope that you are enjoying your
summer and looking forward to lots of fun and learning this year. My name is Mrs. Hyer, and
I will be your teacher for Language Arts, Social Studies and Math. Your Science teacher
will be Mrs. Mulloy-Rasheed.
I am really excited for the school year to begin! One reason is because there are
going to be many enjoyable activities in math this year: math labs, collages, spreadsheets,
math art, and many more projects.
In order to get your math skills “cooking”, it is time to start reviewing the basic
multiplication facts that you learned in third grade! Below you will find the equations that
should be memorized.

7x8=56 8x9=72
7x9=63
During the first few days of school, we will have a "Knights of the Round Table"
multiplication test. I am hopeful that you will become a "Knight"! So, practice your basic
facts nightly!
I am equally excited about Language Arts. We will be writing poetry, personal
narratives, essays, and realistic fiction, as well as reading many exciting books on our "just
right" reading levels.
As you plan to get ready for fourth grade, these items are recommended:
4
sturdy pocket folders with pockets on the bottom
(1 blue, 1 green, 1 yellow, 1 red)
4
wide ruled, 100 sheet, marble composition books
1 pkg. adhesive plastic tabs (Post It flags work well....25 per pack)

you on the first day of school. I am anxious to meet you!

Up A GREAT Year
Dear Boys and Girls,
Welcome to Millstone River Elementary School! I hope that you are enjoying your
summer and looking forward to lots of fun and learning this year. My name is Mrs. MulloyRasheed, and I will be your teacher for Language Arts, Science and Math. Your Social
Studies teacher will be Mrs. Hyer.
2x2=4
2x3=6
2x4=8
2x5=10
2x6=12
2x7=14
2x8=16
2x9=18
3x3=9
4x4=16 5x5=25 6x6=36
3x4=12 4x5=20 5x6=30 6x7=42
3x5=15 4x6=24 5x7=35 6x8=48
3x6=18 4x7=28 5x8=40 6x9=54
3x7=21 4x8=32 5x9=45
3x8=24 4x9=36
3x9=27
7x7=49
7x8=56
7x9=63
8x8=64
8x9=72
9x9=81
1
small flash drive with minimal storage (Basic stick type – rectangular in shape, empty
please)
4
pads of lined post it notes
1
soft pencil pouch containing 24 sharpened pencils, a highlighter, a black erasable pen,
a red pen, and a self contained pencil sharpener
1
small box of colored pencils….no more than 12
1

small pair of scissors
2
extra large book socks
1
novel of your choice for free reading time
1
box of tissues
1

*Please do not bring a trapper keeper or binder, since the desk is not large enough to
accommodate them*
In order to jump start the year, feel free to send me a letter, and tell me a little
about yourself and your interests. You may send your letter to my home or bring it with you
on the first day of school. I am anxious to meet you!

August 2013 Dear Parents, We are pleased to have your child in our rooms this year. We will be sharing many exciting experiences. Each teacher will instruct their class in language arts and math. Mrs. Chang is the team’s science teacher and Mrs. Pellecchia is the team’s social studies teacher. The class will make a special effort to improve writing skills this year. We'd like to share with you some of the things that we'll be doing throughout the school year. 1. All children will keep a journal for each subject. We would like you to prepare two sets of six 70 page spiral notebooks. The colors of the cover page for each subject are: Reading (red), Writing (purple), Math (green), Science (blue), Social Studies (yellow), and Inventions (black). Students will record their valuable thoughts and learning experiences in these journals. This written record of what they have achieved will be taken home periodically to be shared with you and discussed during conferences. 2. Other school supplies include: 5 packets of post‐it notes, pencils, crayons, markers, highlighters, five different colored folders, one flat zipped pencil holders, two rolls of scotch tape, one box of gallon‐size zip lock bags, and one box of Kleenex tissues. 3. For the Columbia Writing Program, we will take writing samples early on to serve as benchmarks for each student. Throughout the school year, we will continue to teach them strategies that help them revise and have them assess their own progress. At the end of the year we will evaluate their improvement as writers. 4. Children will learn many different forms of writing, including stories, reports, poems, and science experiment observations and social studies reports. They will also write in all subjects for different purposes: to ask for information, to express feelings, and to summarize as well as evaluate what they have learned. They will build strong vocabulary skills with the Ganske spelling program and Vocabulary Workshop (more information will follow.). They will study synonyms, antonyms, and apply effective vocabulary to make their writing more descriptive. 5. Children will write for different audiences and in different subject areas. By speaking to others through writing, they are acquiring a "voice," a sense of an important author who has something important to say. They will build their confidence, competence, and self‐esteem. 6. We will talk about good writing and analyze good literature books we read. Children will learn to revise by organizing their ideas and to edit their writing to improve word usage, style, and mechanics. Certain selections will go through several drafts as students polish their writing for publication in some way. We hope to assist your child in growing as a writer and enjoying the process of writing while they learn across the curriculum. Let’s work closely to help your child perform at the best potential and enjoy this precious and rewarding learning experience. Cordially Yours, Mrs. Chang and Mrs. Pellecchia August 2013

Dear Parents & Students,
As your child’s 5th grade teacher, it is my pleasure to welcome you
to the Millstone River School.
Millstone River is a remarkable school full of numerous educational
opportunities that are provided by enthusiastic teachers. This will
be my 13th year as a 5th grade teacher at the Millstone River School.
It is without question that I consider myself extremely fortunate to
be a part of such an outstanding school district.
I realize that teaching your child is a privilege, as well as a
tremendous responsibility. I will do my best this year to ensure that
each student has a motivating and safe learning experience in the
classroom. However, I cannot do this alone, I need your help. We
both need to be partners in the learning process. I need each of you
to encourage your child at home by helping to ensure that they
have completed all their assignments, as well as help them study
for tests and quizzes if necessary. I will keep you informed and up
to date on all assignments, activities & happenings with both daily
& weekly email updates.
Much of our learning will be done through the computer this year
utilizing Google Drive. Have no fear; we will get through it
together. One thing the students can start to do is to memorize
their Student ID Number (the same number they punch in for
lunch). If you don’t know that number, you can logon on to infinite
campus to find it out. Their Student ID number will serve as their
username/password for most of our online programs.
I will not be your child’s only 5th grade teacher this year. This will
be my 3rd year of team teaching with Mrs. Cao. Mrs. Cao will teach
Science, while I will be responsible for teaching Reading, Language
