THE MESSENGER JUNE 2016 CHRIST OUR SAVIOR LUTHERAN CHURCH (Missouri Synod) 2035 IL Route 26 Dixon, IL 61021 Church Office: 815-284-4554 Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to Noon Email: [email protected] Website: www.coslcdixon.org Pastor David Andermann Phone: 815-499-9801 Sunday Worship Service: 9:00 a.m. OUR MISSION STATEMENT - Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church exists as a congregation because of Jesus Christ our Savior to spread the Good News of Christ our Savior; to make disciples in the name of Christ our Savior; and to share the love and caring of Christ our Savior. On Saturday, June 25, 1530, at three o’clock in the afternoon, the Augsburg Confession was presented to the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Charles V. The entire Augsburg Confession was then read aloud. A large crowd gathered around and through the open windows the words were heard by the people with great anticipation. When the reading of the Confession was completed, a German copy and a Latin Copy were handed to the emperor. As the copies were handed over to the emperor, these words were said, “Most gracious Emperor, this is a confession that will even prevail against the gates of hell, with the grace and help of God.” On June 25 of this month we remember the giving of the Augsburg Confession to the emperor. This was the Protestants’ confession of what they believed to be the true exposition of the Bible. As a unique confession of the Word of God as we have it in the Bible, the LCMS still holds this confession as being the true interpretation of God’s Word. As it has stood the test of time, it will continue to stand and the gates of hell have not, and will not prevail against it, because it is based on the Word of God. This day really should be remembered alongside the Reformation on October 31, 1517. If we were to read the Augsburg Confession out loud today, I wonder if the people would come to listen attentively, or would our apathy be very apparent? The teachings of the LCMS would be in jeopardy if the truths of Scripture as interpreted by the Augsburg Confession were not accurate and true. One of the main teachings espoused by the Confessions is that we are saved by grace through faith. This continues to be a tenet of our faith; one that we hang our salvation on. In 2017 we celebrate the 500th year of the Reformation. This was when Martin Luther questioned the beliefs and teachings of the church at that time. The Augsburg Confession came in the years that followed and espoused the teachings of the Reformation. We will have opportunity to celebrate 500 years since the Reformation. Watch for those upcoming opportunities in 2017. Pastor David BIBLE CLASSES - The Thursday morning group will meet every Thursday in June at 10:00 a.m. with the exception of June 16th . You are encouraged to continue the study of God’s W ord every day wherever you are. 2 SERVING OUR LORD IN JUNE Elder: Altar: Bill Sigler Jenny Heuser & Barb Hatfield HAPPY BIRTHDAY IN JUNE! 2nd 10th 12th 13th 14th 17th 19th 23rd 27th 28th Phil Heuser Matt Heesaker Kim Oborski, Lois Kleinschmidt, Derek Lindstrom, Kirstyn Carter Jennifer Sheaffer Valerie Miller Dorothy McBride Mary Bendickson, Pam Miller Allison Bandera Jeanette Heesaker Gordon Meyer, W.C. Note change in date! We will continue the Bible study DVD Series “Overflowing Abundance,” by Donna Pyle, by viewing the video for Lesson 5, “When Provision Overflows.” After the Bible Study, we will have a short business meeting. Then we will continue working on the “recycled” greeting cards. Bring your paper scissors! Gloria Kunde from Messiah is hoping to be able to return to teach those of us who weren’t able to attend the May meeting. Those who were there said they REALLY enjoyed making the cards! If you weren’t able to join us in May for this new servant opportunity, we hope you will join us on June 4. REMINDER: The registration deadline to receive the lowest registration fee is JUNE 11, for the LWML Northern Illinois District Convention, September 23– 25, 2016, at Belvedere Events & Banquets in Elk Grove Village, IL. On June 12 the fee goes up $10 and another $20 on August 11. See Joy Meyer for a registration form or more details. Keep saving those used greeting cards for Sisters in Christ. There is a collection box in the fellowship hall for this purpose. Thanks! STAMPS FOR MISSIONS - Since 1997 LWML NID has been collecting postage stamps to help fund mission grants. Several thousand dollars every year are generated through the sale of cancelled postage stamps. Stamps should be cut off envelopes leaving a ¼ inch edge around the stamps. Flag and Bell stamps should not be saved. Postcards are welcome. Please save the whole card. Do not just send the stamp. Cutting the stamp off postcards makes them lose their value. Stamps in albums, foreign and commemorative stamps are especially welcome. The LWML NID also collects eyeglasses, sunglasses and eyeglass cases for eyeglass mission trips. Both the eyeglasses and stamps can be placed in the boxes in the Fellowship Hall in the bookcase at the end of the tables with the coffee pot. These will then be taken to the LWML NID. Thank you! HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! 4 OUTREACH COMMITTEE NEWS Fellowship Hour always brings wonderful coffee and treats from your fellow church members. Please come and join us each Sunday! Under Dennis’ watchful eye, you can sign up to bring treats or ask questions about how everything works. Last year, a new policy was started—“If funds are needed for the coffee fund, the green basket will be placed out on the table. Should enough funds be present, the green basket will be taken off the table and returned only when funds are needed.” Remember that when treats are not supplied by a member, the coffee fund will also be used to buy donuts—please support the green basket. Thanks again to all who provided the treats this past month. Petunia Parade will be held on Sunday, July 3, 2016. Outreach will be passing water out again this year. It would be nice if the church could provide 2 or 3 “watering holes” this year. If you have a truck, or are interested in helping to pass out water, please talk with Samantha Dopke. The parade theme this year is Dixon Pride. Spuds and Splits Update and Final Report Our “Third” Annual Spuds and Splits was very successful! Eve, Sarah, Rebecca, Jochebed and Miriam all had courage and trusted in God. If you do not recognize Jochebed's name you may want to open your Bible and start reading. Hint--she was a very courageous mom and defied an evil Ruler. For faithfully attending our youth group each Sunday, our youth will be going to the Milwaukee Zoo on Friday, May 27th. This ties in with our Noah's Ark project and the skits they did for the Sunday School children. They will be on the lookout for the animals God saved by sending them to Noah to put in the Ark. SHILOH NEWS - Bringing Comfort to the Czackowski Family The response for K-9 Comfort Dog team was tremendous after receiving the call from Glueckert Funeral Home that the family of Tracy Czackowski had requested the Comfort Dogs for her visitation. The story from earlier in the week touched the hearts of people across the country. Tracy was shot while driving home from a family weekend in the Wisconsin Dells with her husband, Greg, and two children, Matthew and Sofia. Tracy later died from her wound. Prior to the visitation, as the family gathered for prayer, Shiloh Comfort Dog (Christ Our Savior - Dixon, IL) and Damarius (in training) were invited to join the family. Fourteen Comfort Dogs and their handlers were present at various times throughout the visitation, which was a great comfort to both the children and adults. Matthew and Sofia spent much time with all of the dogs as they frequently watched photos of their mom flash above on a monitor. Please continue to lift up the Czackowskis in your prayers. (From Lutheran Church Charities Making a Difference Newsletter, May 11, 2016) You can keep up with stories like this one about Shiloh and see how she is bringing smiles and comfort to so many people every day by “Liking” Shiloh Comfort Dog on Facebook! 7
