Photo by John Whalen Minnesota Hits the Water Do You Have Equipment Disposals? Read on p. 3 Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) launched Minnesota (SSN 783) into the James River on Saturday, Nov. 3. “Launch is a significant accomplishment in the life of a submarine,” said Jim Hughes, vice president of Submarines and Fleet Support. “It’s an opportunity for our incredible shipbuilders to stand back and take pride in their work. Thanks to their tremendous efforts and steadfast determination, Minnesota’s progress is nearly one year ahead of schedule and has been built using about 600,000 fewer man hours than the previous boat.” To achieve her latest milestone, the 7,800-ton Minnesota was moved out of a construction facility into a floating dry dock using a transfer car system. The floating dry dock was submerged, and Minnesota was launched into the James River. Once in the water, tugboats moved the submarine to NNS’ submarine pier, where final outfitting and testing will take place. At about 92 percent complete, Minnesota is on track to complete in 63 months. NNS Veterans Describe How Their Past Military Service Benefits Them at the Shipyard Read on p. 3 and 4 HII Donates $50,000 to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Relief On Nov. 6, Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross’ Disaster Relief Fund. The money will help provide food, shelter, supplies and comfort to the people affected by Hurricane Sandy. “With most of our operations along coastal waters, we truly understand the human suffering, loss of life and damage to property caused by Mother Nature,” said Bill Ermatinger, HII’s corporate vice president and chief human resources Nov. 12 - 16, 2012 officer. “HII has joined other companies and thousands of private citizens to lend support.” HII has also established a “microsite” for employees to donate directly. Donations will go toward providing food, shelter and supplies to people who have lost everything. If you would like to contribute, visit: american.redcross.org/ huntingtoningalls-emp. NNS was accepted into the VEEP because of its excellent environmental compliance record and environmental management program. The partnership with the Department of Environmental Quality will provide many incentives to NNS such as as permit fee discounts and reduced monitoring. CELEBRATE VETERANS DAY Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was “dedicated to the cause NNS Veterans Describe How Their Past Military Service Benefits Them at the Shipyard of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.’” As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans. In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress — at the urging of the veterans service organizations — amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. This observance is endorsed by the Newport News Shipbuilding Diversity Council. “It taught me how important it truly is to build these ships as if they are going to house your family, because some day they might -- and you want your family to be safe while protecting our country.” USS Enterprise Returns Home From Its Final Voyage On Nov. 4, USS Enterprise (CVN 65) returned to Norfolk Naval Station for the last time following a sevenand-a-half-month deployment. The nations’ first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is scheduled to be inactivated on Dec. 1 during a formal ceremony. All veterans of Enterprise, families, and friends who share pride of “Big E” are invited to attend the ceremony and visit the ship in the week leading up to the Inactivation Ceremony. RSVP is required via home computer at www.enterprise.navy.mil. NOVEMBER 11 Jim Minor Jr. (X70) U.S. Navy Photo Enterprise will return to Newport News Shipbuilding in 2013 to begin its inactivation. Minnesota Posters are Available Posters celebrating the christening of Minnesota are available for shipbuilders outside of the Communications Office on the first floor of Bldg. 520. “As a U.S. Marine, we are trained to fight battles, however, it’s the core values that the Marine Corps instills in you that prepared me. Honor, courage, and commitment. It’s an honor for me to continue to serve this country as a civilian by working here. Taking pride in the small part I have in building these great ships is one way to continue to support the brave men and women who go into harms way.” Corey Nichols (X76) “I spent from 1971 to 1975 in the Navy as an enlisted sailor. I helped literally hundreds of sailors with hardship cases, re-enlistments, change of duty stations and retirements. This gave me a sincere appreciation of what our sailors do to serve our country. We owe them deep gratitude for their service, but most importantly, we owe them the quality ships that they man.” Jerry Blasko (X10) Continued on p. 4 CURRENTS p. 4 NOV 12 SEEKING LEADERS: employment opportunities with Newport News Shipbuilding Job Title Requisition Number Department Location Foreman 2726BR X88/X42 NNS Foreman 2721BR X82/X32 NNS Foreman 2366BR X73 NNS Mgr Engineering 2 2566BR E86 NNS Mgr Engineering 2 2761BR E87 NNS Mgr Engineering 2 1301BR E86 NNS Mgr Engineering 2 2732BR E83 NNS Mgr Programs 3 2586BR O87 JAPAN Dir General Manufacturing 2 2764BR K89 NNS Mgr Quality 3 2776BR O61 NNS Dir Administration 2 2778BR O61 NNS DATEBOOK NOV 13 NOV 15 NOV 15 NOV 17 NOV 20 NOV 22 DEC 04 L.E.A.R.N. will host an after work presentation with Jennifer Boykin, vice president of Engineering and Design, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the VASCIC Auditorium. Continued from p. 3 “My time spent serving our country most certainly set me up for success at Newport News Shipbuilding and I am no more or no less proud of either career. I am very proud to have sailed the oceans on the world’s best ships in the world’s best Navy, now instead of operating those ships I build those ships, the best ships in the world for the world’s best Navy.” Louis Rajnys (X71) “From my Navy experience, I learned quite a lot about the daily operations, structure, maintenance, damage control and fire fighting, life saving, and day to day living conditions aboard a ship.” David Perry (X76) “In 1975 I enlisted in the Army and was trained in Power Generation and Electrical Theory at U.S. Army Engineering School at Ft. Belvoir. I worked in both fixed and field conditions in South Korea in 1976. That experience paid off 30 years later as I had the privilege to develop many X31 Electrical training courses during the Trades Modernization effort. Both the classroom training and field experience in the Army enabled me to better understand how to help create training that shipbuilders can use on the job.” Jim Wallis (O36) “Today, I am utilizing the supervisory and management skills I have obtained, primarily from my military service, as the Modeling and Simulation and System Test manager for my department.” Mark Friedrich (X70) For more Veterans Day coverage, visit www.huntingtoningalls.com/veterans.
