ISBN#: 978-‐8-‐84682-‐537-‐7 2 Course Standards and Final Grade Components: Spanish 201 Course Components: Attendance 5% Participation 5% Homework 15% Cultural Project & Oral Presentation 10% Compositions 15% Chapter Exams 25% Oral Exam 10% Final Exam 15% _________________________________________________ Final Grade 100% A 93-‐100% B 82-‐87% C 71-‐77% F 0-‐59% AB 88-‐92% BC 78-‐81% D 60-‐70% Attendance (5%): Daily attendance is required and is the key to language success. You will be allowed three “free” absences throughout the semester with no points deducted. Each absence beyond these three will equal one percentage point off your final grade, up to 5 points off (four absences will thus equate to 4/5 for attendance, five absences will equal 3/5, six absences will equal 2/5, seven absences will equal 1/5, and eight or more absences will automatically result in a “0” for the attendance component of your grade). Please note that your absences can negatively affect other aspects of your grade as well, including your participation grade. If you miss one third or more of the total class days you will automatically fail the course. Three tardy arrivals will equal one absence. Participation (5%): Your participation grade is based on active and quality contributions to class en español. You must demonstrate that you are studying on your own and keeping up with homework assignments. English use will significantly lower your participation grade. You will be given a participation grade each week, which will be averaged together for overall midterm and final participation grades. Please be advised that an absence amounts to a “0” in participation for that day and will consequently affect your participation grade for that week. Homework (15%): You will have daily homework assignments, including but not limited to activities from the textbook and from the online Student Activities Manual (which I will refer to as “WebSAM” in this syllabus and in class). The WebSAM activities will be checked at the end of each chapter, and will be graded primarily on effort. WebSAM assignment grades from each chapter will be averaged for one combined homework grade for that chapter. Any grade of 70% or higher will equate to a “10/10” for that chapter, while grades lower than 70% will amount to a “0.” All WebSAM assignments must be completed by the chapter exam to receive credit for that chapter. Non-‐WebSAM assignments are due the day indicated on the course calendar and may be collected randomly. Incomplete assignments will result in a "0" for the entire chapter. Late homework will not be accepted for any reason. In addition, you must meet with tutors for a total of 3.5 hours of conversation practice during the course of the semester. After each session, you will have one week to post a reflection on my courses. Session attendance will be recorded and will count as a homework grade. Cultural Project & Oral Presentation (10%): Working in groups of two or three, you will research one Spanish-‐
speaking country, focusing on the history, politics and economy. You will then present this country to the class in a 8-‐10 minute presentation. At least two of your three sources must be in Spanish, you must include a visual aid, and you must turn in a list of your sources on the day of your presentation. Your grade will be based on both the content and the creativity of the presentation, which will take place on either Wednesday, November 20 or Friday, November 22. 3 Compositions (15%): This semester you will be writing three compositions. One will be an in-‐class composition on Monday, November 18, and the other two will include both a preliminary version (worth 75% of the total grade for that composition) and a final, revised version (worth the remaining 25%). Compositions will be graded on vocabulary usage, grammar, spelling and typos, creativity, content and overall effort. Topics will be assigned during the course of the semester. Late compositions will not be accepted for any reason. Chapter Exams (25%): You will have six chapter exams this semester. The lowest grade of the chapter exams will be automatically dropped and there will be no make-‐up exams. You can opt out of the last chapter exam if you are satisfied with your chapter exam average. Oral Exam (10%): At the end of the semester you will meet with me for an individual oral evaluation. We will practice in class beforehand, but you will not know the exact topic that you will be asked during the exam. The exam will take place on either Monday, December 9 or Wednesday, December 11, and will take approximately 5-‐
10 minutes. Final Exam (15%): The final exam will take place on Monday, December 16 at 8:00 a.m. Please be sure that you make your travel plans accordingly to avoid a schedule conflict, as the exam cannot be rescheduled. The exam will be cumulative, covering the grammar discussed throughout the course of the semester. Please note: Students with documented disabilities who may need accommodations or any student considering obtaining documentation should make an appointment with Ms. Martha Bledsoe, Director of Services for Students with Disabilities. It is strongly suggested that such students contact her office no later than the first week of class. She can be reached by calling 262-‐
524-‐7335 or via email at [email protected]. Counseling and Learning Resources for Students: Academic Integrity: The Carroll University Academic Integrity Policy is located in your student handbook. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with it. If a student violates this policy in any way, I reserve the right to impose a sanction of failure on the assignment/assessment or failure in the course. If you have questions about appropriate citations, please ask. o
While I encourage you to seek outside help in support of this class if necessary, please be aware that certain kinds of help – i.e. having a tutor revise your written work for you prior to your turning it in, using translation programs to write essays or complete assignments, or otherwise turning in work that does not genuinely reflect your own exclusive efforts – amount to a form of academic dishonesty. Please let me know if you plan to use the support of a tutor so that I may outline some important guidelines. Please keep in mind that plagiarism is defined by the Carroll University policies as "claiming credit for the work or effort of another without authorization or citation." Carroll Library Learning Commons and Spanish Tutoring: Spanish tutoring is available in the Library Learning Commons. Please check the online tutor schedule or the tutor board in the Learning Commons for the most current information. If you cannot meet during the posted hours, please fill out a Tutor Request form available at the Learning Commons Information Desk or on the above noted webpage. FERPA (Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act): The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (also known as FERPA or the Buckley Amendment) affords students certain rights with respect to their education records. Please consult the FERPA public notice found on the registrar's website: www.cc.edu/academics/registrar/. Counseling at the Walter Young Center for Counseling and Career Services: Please consult the WYC website for specific information and support: http://www.cc.edu/studentlife/wyc/.
