BILBAO, SPAIN
Arrive: 0800 Friday June 27, 2014
Onboard: 1800 Monday June 30, 2014
Brief Overview: The city of Bilbao sits on the northern coast
of Spain in the Basque region and is a metropolis home to
over 1 million people. With a long history of heavy
industry, the city is now characterized by the works of
many talented and world-renowned architects. While
Canadian architect Frank Gehry’s famous Guggenheim
Museum remains a modern structural marvel and attracts
millions of visitors from around the globe each year, there
are numerous other museums that this city presents that
are not to be missed. Head into the Old Quarter; Bilbao’s
700-year-old city center that was once the scene of the
city’s commercial and port activities. The area is now a
pedestrian precinct lined with numerous shops and fantastic restaurants. On June 29, join the city as it
celebrates the Renaissance Church of San Pedro with various activities, local cuisine, and outdoor
concerts. ISE will offer a shuttle on June 29 to the nearby town of Sopelana so that students may enjoy the
festivities.
Lush, green mountains provide a lovely backdrop to the city, as well as the Nervion River that runs through
Bilbao. Stroll across the many bridges that connect the city, each one with a unique architectural design.
Walk up and down the banks of the river, or catch a Bilboat to tour the city by boat.
Surrounding: Exit the bustling city center and find yourself in the Rioja Alavesa to take in the beautiful
landscape and expansive vineyards. Visits to the local wineries in this area are popular among visitors.

BILBAO & GUGGENHEIM
Bilbao is the industrial and financial
capital of the Basque country. The
Romans, who discovered iron ore
mines along the Nervion River which
cuts through Bilbao, built numerous
foundries on the banks of the river
which
today
are
undergoing
spectacular transformations and
renovations.
This tour explores Bilbao's Old Quarter with its famous narrow 'seven
streets', interesting architecture and Medieval heart; providing a stark
contrast to the ultra-modern and visually striking Guggenheim Museum,
which opened in 1997. The building and its remarkable structure are
rivaled by the contents of its galleries.

SAN SEBASTIAN & HONDARRIBIA
Few cities have earned such
appropriate
nicknames
as
San
Sebastian – 'The Beautiful', 'Pearl of
the Sea' and 'Incomparable'. A visit to
this charming medieval town built
around a crescent-shaped bay will
show you why. San Sebastian, or
Donostia, was made popular in 1886
by Queen Regent Maria Cristina and has been popular with Spanish
aristocracy ever since. The old town
is full of character and a perfect
place for strolling. Hondarribia, near
the French border is divided into two
parts – the upper town is the
medieval district and the lower
section is a fishermen's village.
