Theme Boxes for Hire
What are Theme Boxes useful for?
Theme boxes are a really useful way to support
term time class projects, or theme days and group
events, either as a starting point or as a review at
the end of a project.
Who can use the new theme boxes?
Although the theme boxes are marketed via
audience type, any organised community group or
school (within the boundaries of Stockton) can
hire any of the above theme boxes.
What is the hire charge?
All theme boxes are £25.00 each to hire with the
exception of the Victorian Costume box which is
£50.00 to hire. This is a non-refundable hire
charge.
How many theme boxes can I hire at one time?
You can hire up to two theme boxes
simultaneously within a half term period, however
these are not available for loan during holidays.
How long can I hire a theme box for?
You can hire a theme box for 4-5 weeks each half
term. Collection dates and return dates will be
given at the point of booking.
How can I book a theme box?
Theme boxes can be booked by contacting
reception on 01642 527375. All theme boxes need
to be collected by a teacher or group leader from
Preston Park Museum reception desk and signed
out by both parties. Payment will also need to be
made at this point. So please bring a cheque or
cash with you otherwise you will not be able to
take the box away. Theme boxes should also be
returned to the reception desk and signed back in.

Self-Led Visits
If you would like to visit the museum and explore at your own pace, self-led, we
recommend a full day in the spring/summer months, April — July and a half day
visit in the Autumn/Winter months, September — March.
Museum displays include the four following themes:
Please allow approximately 20 minutes per theme.
‘The Hall and its People’ - Here you can discover the Hall’s history and the
movers and shakers of the time, 1825.
‘Collections and Collecting’ - Here you can explore three significant collections
including; The Armoury collection, The Fine Art Collection, and the Ions collection.
‘Power House of Industry’ - Arrivals and dispatches to the town of Stockton;
from early Vikings to the humble match. Shipping and steam trains.
‘Clocking Off’ - What did the residents of Stockton do in their spare time after
work? Sport, cinema, toys, housework, arts and crafts hobbies, television,
shopping and the pub. Please note, Stockton’s overall collection also contains
many social and domestic artefacts and themes throughout.
The Victorian Street
A visit to our most treasured Victorian Street is truly recommended. You and your
class will surely want to see our highly acclaimed blacksmiths or our aromatic
chemists, maybe our drapers, print shop or toy shop? For all this and more please
ensure you schedule time during your visit.
Museum Shop
Schools can also enjoy a visit to our fantastic, well stocked museum shop. The
shop stocks a wide range of products and souvenirs. Many schools limit children
to £2.00 each.
Sweet Shop
Children will love dropping by J.F. Smiths the sweet shop; just be mindful if you
are bringing a large group you might want to ring ahead and book your order to
save long queues on the day.
Walled Kitchen Garden
For those wanting a more leisurely pace to the day, why not stroll through our
beautiful walled kitchen garden and view the stunning plants and vegetables.

Username and Password
Online Booking System
We now require you to make an online booking for
a self led visit and or selected workshop. This new
online booking system will invite you to enter your
username, which is a school email address; ideally
this will be the school secretary’s email address You will then be asked for a password, which all
teachers within your school will need to know along
with the username, should they want to make a
booking.
To help you along with this new booking process you can print the guidelines as a
download from our website www.prestonparkmuseum.co.uk ‘How to Make a
School Booking’ guide.
Booking check list
Before you embark on a booking please have the following ready:
• Several dates to visit in case the first date you select is not available
• Type of visit: i.e. self led or a specific workshop, or both
• Do you require a packed lunch space?
• A valid school purchase card: with relevant payment permissions/allowances
agreed, debit card or credit card. If your school does not have a purchase card,
an individual can use their own card.
• To avoid disappointment you are advised to book your museum visit before you
book your coach.
• If your school does not have a purchase card provided by the L.E.A. and staff do
not wish to use their own debit or credit card, due to potential double bookings,
we cannot bypass the online booking system. Therefore only a basic ‘self led’
booking without workshops and lunch spaces can be honoured over the
telephone and a cheque will need to be brought on the day of your visit, made
payable to Stockton Borough Council.
Packed Lunch Cabins
Please note, if you require a lunch cabin, they are seasonal and therefore available
from April 1st - October 31st. One cabin per school, per booking and each cabin
seats 30 children. If you are bringing a whole year group you are required to rota
your classes between 12.00noon — 2.00pm. Please will you clean up after your
school group and place any rubbish in the bin provided.
