WHHO WEB SITE: www.whho.com WHHO Woodland Hills Homeowners Organization September 2013 P.O. Box 6368, Woodland Hills, CA 91365 President's Message Welcome to the last quarter of the Year. Fall begins in September as school used to do until this year. So while the seasons change on schedule there is no schedule in how or when Government does things. Change is one of the constants we should get used to always being there whether we want it or not. General Meeting Next meeting Wednesday September 25,2013 at 7:30 p.m KAISER PERMANENTE HOSPITAL Auditorium "c" Entrance #5 5601 DESOTO.AVENUE WOODLAND HILLS, CA 91367 We are supposed to be getting change in how the City's Planning Department, BUilding and Safety Department and Transportation Department will be amalgamated into one Department. For the Public this might turn out to be a good thing. AGENDA: We will have Information on the new proposed Warner Center Specific Plan And will have a Guest Speaker State Senator Fran Pavley to tell us what is new in Sacramento and to take questions from the attendees. Think how nice it would be if all three would work together to make Planning work because Building and Safety actually made sure that what was approved was what actually was built, and Traffic really made the mitigations were actually mitigated as proposed. As it is now, there is no way the public can make sure that a project is being built as approved in the planning process. There are no real check and balances on developers. In fact many times buildings get bigger or much smaller because the City rarely checks the specifics of the approved plans with the plans on site, if the plans are even on site other than the working plans used by the contractor. by being persistent and visible, have been very noticeably present on every public hearing on all requests that people ask us to do something that needs approvals. We are happy to work with everyone in the community to keep this a nice and safe place to live and work because we look out for each other. Once something is bUilt, even when done without permits, it is difficult to get the Courts to order anything demolished or even modified if it is totally out of line with what was permitted. This is why the WHHO has tried to keep the developers and the City on notice that they are being watched. This is difficult but we have had limited success. The Planning Committee for the Neighborhood Council is doing a good job in spite of the City Departments making it difficult. A number of WHHO members sit on the various committees of the NC and bring their expertise to help. We hope that you appreciate that so many members of the WHHO donate their time to attend 2 or more days to meetings to make Woodland Hilis a wellplanned and business conditioned place to live. We, President Gordon Murley The opinions expressed are those of the President and do not necessarily represent those of the Board of Directors or the members of the Organization. THOUGHTS OF OTHERS We are all salesmen every day of our lives. We are selling our ideas, our plans, our enthusiasms to those with whom we come in contact. CHARLES M. SCHWAB Mind is a most delicate evidence. Not a soul has yet seen it. RICHARD EBERHART When in doubt, tell the truth. MARK TWAIN NOTE:- IF YOU WISH TO BE SURE THAT WE CAN CONTACT YOU BY EMAIL TO INFORM YOU OF Woodland Hills Homeowners Organization HAPPENINGS BETWEEN NEWSLEITERS - PLEASE SEND US AN EMAIL SO WE CAN BE SURE YOU ARE IN OUR DATA BASE. So, if you want to help us get started you can email us and we will put you in the WHHO address directory. Email to:[email protected] BUSINESS THAT IS HElPFUL It is interesting that three businesses in the community have consistently brought emails telling me how gracious and helpful they have been. Franklins Hardware saves them time and usually money, PC4Less frequently quickly solves a problem and then Paul doesn't charge them for what he sees as a minor adjustment, and T & G motors seems to be very fair and generous also with minor fixes. It is nice to know that a business cares and treats people well. Please don't always expect not to pay because it is up to the owners to decide and they have rent, employees and taxes and fees to pay to stay in business. It is just that at times they return the kindness to a good customer even though they can't get their time back but felt the person so treated was well worth it. A lot of our businesses have great employees that serve us well and treat their customers with kindness. We hope that those who find a bad business make sure they weren't more demanding than they were willing to pay. Remember we are not the only ones who sometimes have a bad day. Remember the one about walking in another's moccasins. Check out our other advertisers. They all give more in use value to you than they extract in dollars for their service and products. How do they prepare for the shift from high school to college? With the help of GO Days-a comprehensive two-day new student orientation the week before school starts to help them Get Oriented, Get Organized and Get Onboard at Pierce College. The brainchild of a group of our faculty and staff under Counselor/Career Services Director Joanna Zimring Towne, GO Days grew out of the college partnership with Achieving the Dream, an acclaimed national nonprofit that fosters development and implementation of research-based policies and practices to help more community college students succeed. Success is defined as earning a certificate or degree or transferring to a four-year university. "An event like GO Days is an integral part of the new college experience," said Zimring Towne. "Many of our students don't know what to expect and are unprepared for the differences between high school and college. GO Days helps them make the transition and sets them up for success." On campus students took guided tours, had "Cookies & Conversations with Professors," and scurried to dozens of workshops with names like Picking the Right Major, Money for College, Work Smart Not Hard, How to Get an "A", the Top 10 Things to Avoid, and Plugging in at Pierce. These workshops answer questions about financial aid, transfer and associate degree requirements, campus services and resources, and proVide tips and advice for transitioning to college. The event is free and put on by dozens of faculty, staff and student volunteers. GO Days strives to demystify aspects of the Pierce experience. In a packed Transfer Basics seminar, Pierce Counselor Sunday Salter advised the students, "You don't need to decide now what you will do for the rest of your life. We want you to explore your options. This is your opportunity to redefine yourself." I hope you have enjoyed hearing about GO Days. Welcome to warm days of fall, which annually mark the start of another academic year at Pierce College. Sincerely, Dr. Kathleen F.
