School Prospectus
2013-2014
Dear Parent / Guardian,
Thank you for your interest in Westwood Primary School. We hope that this booklet
will answer any questions you may have regarding the school.
At Westwood, we strive to create a happy, inclusive environment, where everyone
feels safe and welcome. The children in our school learn through the first hand
experiences provided by our exciting and creative curriculum. All adults in the
school work together to provide an education which is matched the needs of
every individual, as well as being really good fun!
As a school, we work closely with parents in enabling them to work alongside their
children, and to offer them opportunities to extend their own learning through
various parent classes we offer throughout the year.
If you need any further information or if you would like to look around the school,
please feel free contact the School Office to arrange an appointment to come
and meet us.

ADMISSIONS
The school is responsible for Nursery admissions whilst the Local Authority (LA) is
responsible for Reception admissions. The School works in close co-operation with
the LA at all times.
Places are not offered on a first come first served basis – where there are more
applications than Nursery places, the School allocates places according the LA
recommended criteria.
The Headteacher and Governors are responsible for ensuring that the LA
admissions policy is followed. Westwood’s Admissions policy follows the advice and
guidance provided by the LA concerning admissions procedures. A copy of this
can be obtained from the School Office.
CLASS ORGANISATION
On entry to Westwood, your child will be placed in a single age year group. At the
beginning of each new academic year your child will move into a new class and
usually into the care of a different teacher. Pupils also work with other adults such
as teaching assistants and, in some circumstances, special needs teaching
assistants.

SCHOOL CURRICULUM
The Foundation Curriculum
Children in Nursery and Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage
Curriculum which aims to deliver essential skills and knowledge on which they can
build as they progress through the school.
The National Curriculum
From Year 1 to Year 6 children follow the National Curriculum. This consists of 4
core subjects (English, Mathematics, Science, Information and Communication
Technology) and 6 foundation subjects (History, Geography, Music, Art, Design
and Technology and Physical Education). In addition, children follow the L.A.
Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. We use topics to make learning fun.
5
Assessment
Throughout the school year, children’s progress is measured in a variety of ways.
Teachers make regular assessments of children’s work and contribution, both
formally and informally, and these will be shared with you during parents’ days and
in written reports.
Children in Year 2 and Year 6 take Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs), in both English
and Mathematics. Children in Year 3, 4 and 5 take tests in the summer term.
Children in Year 1 undertake a Phonics Screening activity in the summer term.
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
We want all children to achieve their potential and, from time to time, we may
contact you to offer your child extra support if he/she is experiencing difficulties in
school. If we feel your child would benefit from such extra help, the class teacher,
special educational needs co-ordinator or headteacher will contact you to discuss
it further. Please let us know if you have any concerns about your child.
SAFETY
The safety of pupils is of great importance to us. Children are not allowed to leave
the premises during the day unless they are collected by an adult from the school
office.
PLEASE DO NOT SMOKE ON SCHOOL GROUNDS.
FIRST AID AND MEDICINE IN SCHOOL
A number of members of staff are trained in first aid and will assess injuries/illnesses.
If necessary, we will contact you to pass on information about your child and we
may ask you to collect them if they are unwell. In the case of serious injury/illness,
the emergency services will be contacted immediately. It is vital that you keep us
up to date with home, work and mobile contact numbers so that we can get hold
of you (or a close relative) quickly if we need to.
SEX EDUCATION
Sex Education is not taught as a separate subject, but as part of both science and
personal, social and health education (PSHE). Our aims are:
 To help pupils explore and understand the feelings, attitudes and values of
themselves and others;
 To give pupils a basic knowledge and understanding of human
reproduction and development;
 To help pupils to adapt to changes in themselves.
6
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
We believe that R.E. plays a vital part in helping children to understand the wider
community in which they live. Pupils currently explore the faiths of Christian, Islam
and Judaism in their lesson. Parents have the right to withdraw children from R.E.
but an alternative lesson cannot be provided. Please see the headteacher if you
feel this is necessary for your child.
PARENTAL CONCERNS
We have an “open door” policy which welcomes you to come into school to
discuss any enquiries you may have with your child’s class teacher. If worries
remain, an appointment can be made to see the headteacher. Should any
concerns still exist, or you wish to make a complaint, this must be expressed in
writing to the Chair of the Governing Body. The matter will be fully investigated by
the Curriculum Complaints Committee who will then recommend appropriate
action.
SCHOOL LUNCHES
School meals at Westwood are excellent and we would recommend all children
to have them. We ask that payment is sent into school every Monday (please can
this be given to the class teacher in an envelope clearly marked with your child or
children’s names and class on the front).
If you think you may be entitled to free school meals please go to Oldham Council
at the Civic Centre.
Children may bring packed lunches to school, but for safety reasons we do not
allow drinks in glass bottles or flasks.
PLAYTIME SNACKS
All children in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 have free fruit and milk each
day. We charge £1 per week for snack items throughout the day.
ATTENDANCE
Attending school every day is a very important. At Westwood Primary School, we
expect ALL children to come to school EVERY DAY unless they have a good reason
not to.
