KENYA THE 2017 PORTRAIT COUNTRY AT THE SPECAILTY COFFEE
ASSOCIAATION OF AMERICA (SCAA) SYMPOSIUM AND EXPOSITION
Kenya’s dream has finally come true. Kenya will be exhibiting in the 29th SCAA
Symposium and Exposition as the Portrait Country. The Event scheduled from
19th -23rd April, 2016 will be held in booth number 932 of size 20x60 ft. at the
Washington State Convention Centre, Seattle, Washington State, US.
As a producer of specialty coffee, Kenya has invited through the SCAA
management coffee roasters and experts across the globe to come and witness
the traceability mechanisms put in place through agronomic aspects of Kenyan
coffee production. The Origin Trip which is the “virtuous circle” of the 2017
Portrait Country will take place in Kenya as from 28th November to 3rd
October, 2016. The success of the Origin Trip has been made possible
through industry-wide monthly preparatory meetings to make sure that
the objectives of the coffee roasters visits are met and thus the country
gives the best specialty coffee to the buyers. The country’s SCAA
membership is 6774100.
Kenya’s pavilion booth has been designed to accommodate fifteen coffee
growers and exporters from Kenya who will be exhibiting high quality
coffee. The Kenya’s specialty coffee is in high demand globally owing to
its unique characteristics. Giving the best coffees to the world has been
made possible due to comparative advantage of nature’s gift to the
country. Most Kenya’s coffee is grown on the slopes of Africa’s second
highest mountain- Mt. Kenya. The features of the snow-capped mountain
help in the distribution of abundant natural rainfall which ranges from
1200-2400 mm of annual rainfall and temperature ranges of between 18
to 26 degrees Centigrade with good natural sun.
The Technical and Advisory and the Compliance and Regulatory
Departments of the Directorate ensure that Kenyan coffees are grown in
the correct agro ecological zones. This ensures that Kenyan coffee meets
the Kenya Coffee Standards and Coffee of Practice which are gazetted as
laws. Further, the Directorate’s Quality Section ensures that results of the
cup profile analysis are shared with the growers on a monthly basis to
help ensure that conformity with quality standard is maintained.
As the Official 2017 Portrait Country, clients and visitors of the Kenyan
pavilion booth will be treated to the renowned Maasai Troupe dancers,
coffee sampling, barista championship and give away of green, roasted
and ground coffees. There will be extra meeting rooms with coffee
roasters who would wish to clinch the deal through contract signing. Two
lecture slots have further been set aside to drive home some topics of the
success factors of the Kenyan coffee industry.
A lot more preparations are still on-going and these will be shared with
the public once the final details are confirmed.
