If a floor tile is 27cm × 27cm, how many floor tiles would you need to cover the floor of a
room that's 11.07m × 5.67m?
27cm
Floor
tile
5.67m
Room
27cm
Not to scale
11.07m
Answer
861 tiles are needed to cover the floor of the room.
First, convert the dimensions of the tiles to metres: 27cm = 0.27m.
Calculate the number of tiles that will fit along the length of the room:
11.07 ÷ 0.27 = 41
Calculate the number of tiles that will fit along the width of the room:
5.67 ÷ 0.27 = 21
Multiply these answers to find how many tiles are needed in total:
41 × 21 = 861

If a lawn turf is 1.5m × 50cm, how many lawn turfs would you need to lay a new lawn in a
garden that's 15m × 6m?
50cm
Lawn turf
1.5m
Garden
6m
Not to scale
15m
Answer
120 lawn turfs are needed to lay the new lawn.
First, convert all the dimensions to metres: 50cm = 0.5m.
Calculate the number of turfs that will fit along the length of the garden:
15 ÷ 1.5 = 10
Calculate the number of turfs that will fit along the width of the garden:
6 ÷ 0.5 = 12
Multiply these answers to find how many turfs are needed in total:
10 × 12 = 120

How many of these boxes can you fit sideways onto a
shelf that's 2m long and 12cm wide?
7cm
Answer
28 boxes will fit on the shelf.
Convert the width of the shelf to
centimetres: 2m = 200cm.
9.5cm
The boxes are 7cm wide, so:
200 ÷ 7 = 28.
9.5cm

How many of these cylinders can you fit into a box
10cm x 2m x 20cm?
Answer
20 cylinders will fit in the box.
Convert the height of the box to
centimetres: 2m = 200cm.
10cm
20cm
The diameter of each cylinder is 10cm,
so two cylinders can fit on the base of
the box, which is 10cm long and 20cm
wide.
The box is 200cm tall so 10 rows of
cylinders can fit in: 200 ÷ 20 = 10.
Multiply the number of cylinders in each
row by the number of rows: 2 × 10 = 20.

A plan of a room is drawn to a scale of 1:50. The drawing measures
12cm wide and 14cm long.
What is the length of the room in metres?
Answer
The room is 7m long.
Multiply each dimension by 50:
12cm × 50 = 600cm
14cm × 50 = 700cm
Convert the dimensions to metres:
600cm = 6m
700cm = 7m
The room is 7m long.
