A
Edward Jenner was not the first to inject a substance into a human being in an attempt to
stimulate the immune system to fight a disease. Nor was Jenner even the first to experiment with
a vaccine for smallpox, a malady which had plagued the world since at least 10,000 BC. Yet it
was Jenner who developed the first vaccine that did more good than harm, and which saved
countless lives at a time when smallpox killed an estimated 400,000 Europeans each year. Jenner
is often referred to as the father of the specialisation of immunology and it is claimed his work
has saved more lives than the efforts of any other human being.
B
Jenner was born on May 17, 1749, in Berkeley, a rural vicarage in Gloucestershire, England. The son of a
clergyman, who died when Jenner was five, he was raised by an older brother who was also a man of the
church. From an early age, Jenner became a keen observer of nature, and all things around him, and this
enthusiasm probably contributed to his monumental discovery which would come later.
C
At the age of 13 Jenner attended the local grammar school and at the same time, following a custom that
was common in his time, he became an apprentice to a local surgeon Mr. Daniel Ludlow, of Chipping
Sodbury, a market town in Gloucestershire. This experience allowed Jenner to acquire a sound knowledge
of medicine and prepared him for the next stage in his medical career, a position as pupil with the
surgeon, Mr. John Hunter. Hunter was on the staff of St. George's Hospital and was one of the most
prominent surgeons in London. Perhaps even more importantly for Jenner's education, however, and for
the future of medicine, Hunter was a first-rate experimentalist who nurtured in Jenner the desire to
experiment.
D
Smallpox was a major cause of death in the 18th century. The only way of treating the illness was a form
of vaccination known as variolation, an approach which involved infecting a healthy person with the
“matter” taken from a patient with a mild attack of the disease. Unfortunately, the transmitted disease did
not always remain mild, and mortality sometimes occurred. Furthermore, the inoculated person could
disseminate the disease to others and thus act as a focus of infection.
E
Jenner was determined to find a better vaccine. He noticed that people who had been infected
with cowpox, a much less serious disease than smallpox, became immune to the more dangerous
sickness. Jenner, therefore, tried an experiment. He took infected cowpox matter from the hand
of a dairymaid called Sarah Nelmes and injected it into an eight-year-old boy named James
Phelps. Two weeks later, the boy was injected with smallpox matter. No disease developed. A
cure for smallpox had been found and the first successful vaccination came into existence.

on the Reading section. You may write your answers on the question paper, but you MUST
transfer your answers to the answer sheet before the 20 minutes are over. You will NOT be
given any extra time at the end to do this.
A
Economics studies how a society uses and shares its resources and then assesses the
consequences. The word “economics” was used in the 1790s, but the subject was generally
called political economy until late in the 19th century. The word “economics” comes from the
Greek language and means “household management.” In 1776, the Scottish economist Adam
Smith published An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. It has become a
classic text and has provided the basis for all future study of economics. Most educated people
have heard of the work and it is usually simply referred to as „The Wealth of Nations‟.
B
„The Wealth of Nations‟ established Adam Smith as the most influential figure in the
development of modern economic theory. With exceptional clarity, the book described the
workings of a market economy where goods are bought and sold, and the division of work when
we produce goods. Smith also described how wealth is linked to money and the difference
between productive and nonproductive labour. Moreover, the economist claimed that
governments were unable to manage economies. In many countries today, a number of political
parties still follow his theories. Indeed, it is said former UK Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher,
carried a copy of the book in her handbag.
C
Smith‟s exact date of birth is not certain. However, he was probably born early in 1723 in Kirkcaldy,
Scotland. His father was a lawyer who died two months after Smith was born, leaving his mother a
widow. Although few events in Smith's early childhood are known, Smith‟s biographer John Rae has
recorded that Smith was abducted by gypsies at the age of three and released when others went to rescue
him. He attended the Burgh School in Kirkcaldy —characterised by Rae as "one of the best secondary
schools of Scotland at that period" —from 1729 to 1737.
D
At the age of fourteen, Smith entered the University of Glasgow to study moral philosophy.
Three years later he transferred to Balliol College, Oxford, and remained there until 1746. In
1748, he began giving public lectures in Edinburgh on wealth and its increase. Then, in 1751,
Smith was appointed professor of logic at Glasgow, and the next year he became professor of
moral philosophy. His subject matter included ethics, law, rhetoric, and political economy (now
called economics).
E
His first book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, was published in 1759. After this book, he
began to turn his attention toward law and economics. This is evident from student notes taken at
his lectures about 1763.
