StoryJumper - Classroom Edition

StoryJumper - Classroom Edition
Why a Classroom Edition
The Classroom Edition is designed to...

give teachers an interface to manage and review students' work.

enable kids to share stories between the classroom and home.

maintain strict privacy controls over student information.

enable educational discounts when ordering books.
Let's see follow a hypothetical set-up for Sara Smith, a 5th grade teacher at Woodrow Wilson elementary in
California.
Step 1: Account Creation
The first thing Sara needs to do is create a Classroom Edition account. She can either convert an existing
StoryJumper account, or create a new account. Account creation is a one-time process. She finds the
"classroom edition" link on the homepage.
Teacher and School information.
Step 2: Activation
After creating her account, Sara needs to check her email for a message from StoryJumper that contains an
activation link. Clicking that link will activate her account. If she can't find the mail, she should check her
spam/junk folder, or contact us at [email protected]
Step 3: Class Set-up
Once she's activated her account, Sara clicks on the "Create a virtual classroom" link.
Now she's on the "Class Set-up page". Sara needs to enter:
1. A name for her virtual classroom.
2. A classroom password that kids will share to access the class.
3. The duration of her class. (This is for security purposes, explained below).
4. The first and last name for each student.
5. To save time, the Class Screen Name is automatically assigned with an easy to remember
adjective-animal combination. If Sara wants to change these, she can just delete them and enter
whatever she prefers.
Sara adds more students by clicking the "add more" button at the bottom of the screen. If necessary, a
student's ability to access their class account can be removed by deselecting the "home access" checkboxes.
Once Sara clicks "save" she'll be taken to her "my" page, and will see "my classes." She can also access the
"my" page anytime by clicking the yellow circle button at the top of the screen.
Step 4: Class Preparation
Before her first class, Sara will want to print the handouts for her class. Clicking "print" will create a teacher's
list or "roster" of all students and their class screen name, as well as an instructional handout for each student
that explains how to access their stories both in class and from home.
** To keep personal information secure, students' real names are not printed on the handouts. To help make
distributing the handouts easier, Sara can find the student's first letter of their first name and first two letters of
their last name printed in the upper-right corner of the handout. (For example, "Alicia Anderson" would appear
as "AAN")
Step 5: Starting Class
To begin a class, Sara clicks the 'Start' button next to her class name. Now class is in session and students
can follow the instructions printed on their handouts to access the class. The first time students access the
class they'll be required to enter a class ID. In later classes, they'll only need their Class Screen Name and the
Class Password provided by Sara. (Sara probably wants to keep the roster handy for kids that might forget
their Screen Names).
Sara's class will run for exactly one hour, as configured in the "Duration" for her class. She can change this at
any time by clicking "edit" and adjusting the desired class length.
Step 6: Ending Class
With a duration set to one hour, Sara can either let the class run its course, or if desired, click the 'Stop' button
and end early. In either case, when the class ends, the system will automatically save all work and log the
students out of their accounts. Students will not be able to access their work at school again until the class is
started by Sara.
Why duration? StoryJumper wants to ensure a student's privacy is maintained at all times. Setting class
duration significantly decreases the chance for students in a shared computing environment (e.g. computer
lab) to accidentally or intentionally access other students' accounts.
When Sara's students log-out of their accounts, they will be prompted to share their work with their parents.
Using a special link and a password that the child creates, parents can access their child's work by creating a
free home account.
If the child knows their parent's email address, they can enter it and our system will send them a message with
a link. (the child's personal password will still be required to access). If the child doesn't know their parent's
email address, s/he can simply create a special password and ask their parents to type in the unique link that
is printed at the bottom of their handout.
