In January 2017 less meat was gained in Slovene slaughterhouses than a
month before.
Livestock slaughter in slaughterhouses, Slovenia, January 2017
In January 2017 about 3,064,000 poultry, about 23,000 pigs and about 9,000 cattle were slaughtered
in Slovene slaughterhouses.
In January 2017 fewer animals slaughtered than in the previous month
Compared to the previous month, the number of horses slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses was higher
by about 27% (i.e. about 30 animals) and of poultry by about 6% (i.e. about 168,000 animals). In the same
comparison the number of slaughtered sheep was lower by exactly 43% (i.e. about 400 animals), of cattle by
about 27% (i.e. about 3,000 animals) and of pigs by about 13% (i.e. about 3,000 animals).
The total carcass weight more or less followed the trends in the number of slaughtered animals. The total
carcass weight of slaughtered horses increased by about 33% (weight difference of about 8,000 kg) and of
poultry by about 3% (weight difference of about 130,000 kg). In the same comparison the total carcass
weight of sheep went down by about 41% (weight difference of about 5,000 kg), of cattle by about 26%
(weight difference of about 920,000) and of pigs by exactly 8% (weight difference of about 184,000 kg).
In January 2017 more animals slaughtered than in January 2016
Compared to January 2016, the number of sheep slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses in January 2017
was higher by about 48%, of poultry by about 9%, of pigs by about 7% and of cattle by about 5%. In the
same comparison a decrease was recorded only in horses; by about 4%.
Compared to January 2016, the total weight of dressed carcasses of sheep slaughtered in January 2017
increased by about 57%, of pigs and poultry by about 10% each and of cattle by about 5%. In the same
comparison the total weight of dressed carcasses of slaughtered horses went down by exactly 10%.
In January 2017 we recorded slaughter of 2 cattle imported from Italy; their total weight of dressed carcasses
was about 1 ton. In January 2017 there was no record of slaughter of imported poultry or pigs.

Data on the slaughter of animals in large slaughterhouses are collected with monthly reports sent by
slaughterhouses. Data on the slaughter of animals in smaller slaughterhouses are acquired from the
Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Food Safety, Veterinary and Plant Protection (AFSVPP). Data
on bovine slaughter are acquired from the Bovine Administrative Register (BAR), which is kept by the
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food (MAFF).
Monthly data for 2017 are provisional. With each First Release the data can be corrected and completed with
new data. Final data for 2017 will be published by the end of February 2018.
Detailed data
Detailed data and time series are available on the SI-STAT data portal, which enables simple browsing
and exporting of data in various formats. Registered users have the possibility to store tables for later
browsing and to sign up to be informed when data are updated.
