Similes
and
Metaphors
Similes and metaphors make a comparison of two objects or things. The two objects are usually
different. Similes must use like or as. Metaphors do not use these words in the comparison.
Examples:
My mom who is a busy bee never takes a break. Metaphor
Mom is being compared to a busy bee. This means that she works a lot.
Rumors spread like a wildfire.
Simile
Like is used in this statement to make a comparison between rumors and a wildfire. This means that
rumors can get out of control and cause lots of damage.
Using “Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan, locate at least five examples of similes and metaphors. Record
