I am sure you will agree that the range and quality of the experiences that have been accessed by our pupils is extremely impressive, including the stunning ‘Journeys Intertwined’ event which took place in the last few days of the summer term - a real highlight of the year. Elsewhere, we look back on the College’s work to raise money for charity, pupil leadership opportunities, a wide variety of trips, business links, the Leavers’ Ball, and much more! No wonder that The Fountain won Best Magazine Award. One last word: if you are reading this as the owner of a local business (or as a parent who has the ear of the proprietor), please do consider advertising with us. If you would like to advertise with us, please contact [email protected]. Jonathan Culpin, Principal Head Girl and Boy My name is Holly Bootman, and I am the Head Girl. Part of my role is to represent the school during events in and out of the College, alongside Joe Lever the Head Boy, and work closely with the Forum Leaders. Over the next year I would like to act as a link between pupils and the Senate and encourage others to put their ideas forward. I aim to make the transition to the House System effective and make everyone feel comfortable in the school environment. Hi – my name is Joe Lever and I am the new Head Boy. I am very excited to be working alongside Holly Bootman and the rest of the Senate this year to make things happen at Sawston – the things that you want to happen. We have some exciting projects coming up, which we would love as many of our pupils as possible to be a part of. So if any pupils have any questions, thoughts or issues about any part of life at Sawston Village College, we would love to hear from you. Holly Bootman, Head Girl Joe Lever, Head Boy 4 Sawston Village College Achieving Best College Magazine Sawston Village College was delighted when The Fountain, this magazine, won ‘Best College Magazine’, an award recognising local College magazines and newspapers. The judges commented that the magazine contained attractive photographs and had informative content on College-related activities. This award is testament to the hard work and commitment of the many College staff and pupils who contribute to each edition. For those that do not know or understand what Rugby 7s is, it follows the same laws of rugby as 15-a-side but is played with 7-a-side. The Year 11s had mixed fortunes in their group. Led by head boy Joe Lever, they lost 3 out of their 4 games but beat Linton to come third in their group. A strong, physical display against St. Bede’s took its toll as fatigue got the better of them. However, the boys should be proud of the display they put on for the crowd. The Year 10s, however, went further. An opening win of the group against St Bede’s School set the tone for the rest of the day as they began to dominate the group with further wins against Chesterton and, runners-up in the group, Parkside Federation. An aggressive 5-5 draw against Linton was the closest any team came to beating them. Tries from all over the team and great hands from centres in Jonty Searle and Captain Rory Webster meant that Sawston remained undefeated and in high spirits as they topped the group and progressed to the knockout stages. In the semi-final they took apart Bottisham 20-0 and marched onto the final against an undefeated Melbourn. It was at this point that fatigue began to settle in. The final itself was a pulsating encounter – end to end. Taking an early lead, Sawston then went down two tries to one in the space of two minutes through some lacklustre defending and went into the break losing. However, a try-saving tackle from Tristan Harris turned the game on its head as the boys then scored three tries without reply – Jonty Searle started off the turnaround, followed by the quick acceleration of Owen Moir, who capitalised after Melbourn had dropped the ball. Jack Brown’s try at the end sealed the win and ended all hopes of a Melbourn fightback. An outstanding second-half performance meant that Sawston were worthy winners against tough, physical opposition. The PE Department are so proud of all the boys who represented the school in terms of the quality of rugby they displayed and the effort and mental attitude they demonstrated throughout the whole day. Mr Brookes, PE Teacher Jack Brown’s try at the end sealed the win SAWSTON BOWLS CLUB A six rink bowling green located off New Road, Sawston. I entered the competition because the idea was very exciting and I like watching Master Chef. I also very much like cooking. I wanted to make something sophisticated that looked good and tasted nice. I chose to cook salmon just because I like it. The main problem I thought was going to be getting it done in time, but actually I was one of the first to be finished. What really helped me to finish on time was a very detailed time plan that my Mum and I had written. It was very off-putting because the judges came round and stared at what we were doing. At the end, I actually felt quite pleased with what I had done, but I was still incredibly nervous about the results. Obviously I wanted to win, but I never thought I would get that far because the standard was so high and I was really shocked when I heard that I had won. I am looking forward to the next round of the competition. I would like to say a special thank you to the Rotary Club who sponsored the competition. Isis Read, Year 9 Pupil Sam Carpenter in Year 10 was second. However, all 6 of the Sawston pupils who took part did very well, and recognition is also due to participants Alaska Bilbe, Elizabeth Nightingale, Lucas Burr and Jenson May. “Obviously I wanted to win, but I never thought I would get that far because the standard was so high” Platinum Success The College recently received the prestigious Artsmark Platinum award, Arts Council England’s highest level of achievement under its recently relaunched programme. Artsmark awards are designed to recognise high quality arts and cultural education, and so the school was delighted to have its exceptional commitment to this recognised nationally in this way. Achieving Young Chef Competition 7 8 Sawston Village College Achieving Hairdressing Competition The November Hairdressing competition was a resounding success with all pupils creating outstanding hair and beauty designs based on themes ranging from Halloween, the 1980s to fairy-tale princesses. This will be the 31st time the College has hosted the event, and the local Rotary Club is keen to raise further funds for the local community, which has benefited over the years from over a staggering £411,000. It is always a great day for the whole family, so ensure it is marked in your 2016 diaries. Such was the enthusiasm of those pupils who attended that a Sonic Pi Club has now been set up in school and is proving very popular. The Art Department was able to offer pupils the chance to work with our local community. A small group of KS3 and KS4 pupils volunteered to run the weekly after-school Art Club at Icknield Primary School. The experience was enjoyed by all and concluded with an exhibition of work for parents of the participating children. After the great success of our first sponsored walk in 2014, we recently held our second, larger, walk, on a glorious October day. Pupils wore house colours, staff humiliated themselves in fancy dress, and over 1000 people walked the 5 mile route through Sawston and Babraham. We were very proud of the way pupils conducted themselves and particularly pleased with their impressive efforts to raise sponsorship money. The total raised from the sponsored walk was £4,124.30. Our hope is A fun day at the College raising money for a good cause A group of Year 8 pupils took part in an Architecture Project in June, working with RIBA East and architect David Osborn to make designs for a new pavilion in Sawston. that we can then put the money towards outdoor equipment, including allweather table tennis tables for use at break and lunchtime, and additional bike racks, both ideas that have come from the Pupil Forums. Thank you to all pupils, parents, friends and family who donated money. Mr Woodcock, Assistant Principal Sawston Village College 11 Self-motivated Inspiring visit to Oxford On 16 November I visited Wadham College, Oxford University. I was apprehensive about this visit but found it to be extremely enjoyable and interesting. On arrival we went straight into a History lecture on the subject of Pompeii and Herculaneum led by a PHD student and Archaeologist, who was very engaging. We had a tour of the grounds including the students’ private gardens, the picturesque front quad, the Chapel, the round Music Hall, which is the oldest of its kind in Europe, and the breath-taking Wadham College has inspired me Great Hall, where the students eat their dinner. It was rich in history and incredibly impressive. Wadham was one of the first universities to accept women to study. The student guide described it as the most liberal College, being the only one to drop gown-wearing at dinner. My overwhelming feeling when leaving the College was how inclusive and down-to-earth it felt. The people were so kind, welcoming and friendly which, rightly or wrongly, I was not expecting. I felt at home there. It has given me a goal to work towards and has left me inspired. Clemency Hailes, Year 11 Pupil Huntingdon Gymnastics Trip As a result of their recent performance, both in lessons and extra-curricular commitments, 20 of Sawston’s talented gymnasts were selected to participate in an advanced training session delivered at Huntingdon Gymnastics club in June. Huntingdon is an internationally renowned purpose-built gymnastics facility, where British Olympic silver medallist Louis Smith still trains. During their visit the pupils were challenged to advance their skills through the use of specialist apparatus and the assistance of elite coaching, adding multiple somersaults, handsprings and back flicks to their repertoire. In addition to this, the pupils were fortunate enough to meet Louis Smith MBE and Commonwealth, European and World Championship medallist Daniel Keatings, seeing for themselves the elite athletes practising their Olympic standard routines in their preparation for Rio 2016. Miss Harvey, PE Teacher 12 Sawston Village College Positive Towards a Vertical House System As many of you will know, September saw the introduction of a vertical house system across the College. Staff and pupils are now members of a mentor group within one of four houses: Da Vinci, Earhart, Mandela and Turing. Each mentor group comprises two mentors and approximately 20 pupils drawn from across five year groups. Pupils meet with their mentors daily for 20 minutes each morning and collectively as a house once a week in assembly. Effecting these changes has been significant and says much about the values and ethos of the College. By incorporating non-teaching staff into the team of mentors, we are recognising their wealth of talent and increasing our capacity to support pupils on a one-to-one basis. By mixing age groups and challenging pupils to guide and support each other, we are redefining peer groups, and in creating the four houses, we are introducing yet further opportunities to share in and celebrate individual and collective success. Visit by Eminent Historian In November we were pleased to welcome Professor Sir Richard Evans to the College. He is one of the world’s leading experts on the subject of the Nazi period of German history. Professor Sir Richard Evans lectures all over the world, is the master of Wolfson College in Cambridge and a great supporter of Sawston Village College. He spoke for 30 minutes about how the Nazis attempted to control the German people and then took questions. Our thanks go out to the staff, parents and pupils who have risen to these challenges and we look forward to the weeks and months ahead. Mr Wallace, Deputy Principal Sawston Cinema Update If you have not yet had the opportunity to come along to a screening at Sawston Cinema, the cinema operated by the school, then we invite you to do so. As well as screening films, we have a satellite dish which enables us to live-stream events. This means, for example, that on Tuesday 8 December we will be broadcasting Jane Eyre live from London as part of the National Theatre Live programme. Many young people from the school are involved in our cinema operations and, as a result of this, we have recently been awarded funding from the BFI via our local Film Hub with a view to setting up a Young Programmers' Network, which Year 7 and 8 pupils will be involved in. This interest in film has also led to successful filmmaking, and the school is scheduled to take part in the 'Into Film Into Space' project which will see young people make a film on the theme of Space and Exploration, with the best 6 or 7 films submitted nationally to be watched by the British astronaut in the International Space Station. The deadline for film submission is the end of January. Sawston Village College As the winter term Rugby and Hockey fixtures draw to a close, the PE department proudly looks back on many fantastic performances on the sports field throughout the term, with the trophy cabinet now containing three District Championship trophies. All of our teams have now competed in their tournaments against the 18 other District Schools. The Year 7 boys became District Champions for the third time in four years with a 15-0 win over Chesterton in the final after coming through a difficult pool involving Bottisham and Impington. The Year 10 boys were also victorious in the Rugby 7s tournament held at Cambridge Rugby Club, and you can read the details of the thrilling encounters they had elsewhere in this magazine. The Year 9 boys went very close to bringing home another trophy as they ended up runners-up to St Bede’s, finishing 10-5 in their District Final. This was a fantastic performance improving from eighth in the previous year. On the girls’ side congratulations to the Year 9 girls who also won their District Tournament. After topping their qualifying group held at the Perse School involving Netherhall and Linton, they progressed to the finals afternoon where they overcame Soham and Comberton in a very hard-fought final to take the title. Well done also to the Year 10/11 girls who qualified for the finals, where they finished third overall. School catering environments, by their very nature, differ from high street competitors and are subject to greater scrutiny and legislation. However, Sodexo are bringing new trends to school dining room counters and they constantly try to find ways of providing food which is popular with young pupils while also meeting the requirements of The School Food Plan. As a forerunner to the new term, regional roadshows in July brought together Sodexo School Catering Managers from all corners of the UK to get some expert tips on how to pep up their food and the way it is displayed. Account Director Rachel Wilson and Executive Development Chef Paul Eastmead ran through a number of updates and additions that have been added to the style guide, which managers originally worked from. For instance, many have now introduced Sodexo’s own high street influenced brand, The Social, which uses carefully thought through typography, colour palette, image, style, composition and tone of voice to inform the pupil at the point of purchase. Rachael said the introduction of The Social plus the taking on of a number of new school contracts means the business is doing well, which in turn has provided a platform to make enhancements and to try out some new approaches. ‘We have come a million miles from where we were’, she told the managers. ‘It is making a difference. We are on a great journey; let’s keep going’. *New website coming soon! Josh Rise Up The show featured five industry sectors from Games Design to Robotics In October the school was pleased to welcome in a theatre company performing a new, award winning, hour-long piece called ‘Rise Up’, about the young ‘Freedom Riders’ who travelled through Mississippi and Alabama promoting peace and antidiscrimination. Geographical Association’s Worldwise Quiz 7 pupils from Years 9-10 competed in the Geographical Association’s Worldwise Quiz at Long Road on 25 November. The quiz teams did the school proud, with the Sawston A team (Lucy Main, Daniel Atkin and Aaron Cain) coming 6th out of 20 teams, and the Sawston B team (Emily Semple, Abigail Halliday, George Weston and James Goon) coming 7th. The Perse School had two teams which came 1st and joint 2nd with Comberton Village College. This meant that, sadly, for this year, Sawston had to return the trophy it had won previously. Miss Bow, Geography Teacher Sawston Village College - The Winter’s Tale Our multi-talented KS3 Drama pupils performed A Winter’s Tale at the Mumford Theatre on 9 November. Our focus was to work together as ‘original conditions’ players who all act, sing, dance, play live music and multi-role throughout. The Sawston pupils worked tirelessly and enthusiastically throughout to rehearse all hours, learn the complexity of Shakespeare’s language and re-tell the story with a big and bold ‘stamp’ of their own. Well done to everyone involved. The cast then performed The Winter’s Tale again at Sawston Village College for pupils, parents and staff. Year 7 pupil, Josie Rainsford writes: It was performed extremely well and the standard of the acting was very high ‘On 20 November I saw the Shakespeare production of The Winter’s Tale, which was performed by some Year 8 and Year 9 pupils. It was performed extremely well and the standard of the acting was very high. My favourite part of the show was all of it because of all the variety of characters. If the show was performed in national theatres, I would definitely recommend it to others.’ Ms Russ, Head of Drama Art and Science Project The Art Department has had a number of exciting opportunities for pupils. At the end of the summer term, a group of Year 9 pupils attended a workshop at University Technical College to learn about research careers in a well-known pharmaceutical company. They were then able to participate in an art and science project to produce designs which will decorate the site hoardings during the construction phase of the company’s new base at Addenbrookes. These are due to be unveiled in January 2016. When we were told that we were going to be singing in a chapel service at Corpus Christi College, I don’t think any of us thought that we would leave having been ‘within 10 metres of a quarter of the most important books in English history’, as the guide told us coolly, clearly amused at our gawping faces. We left the school at 1:30 pm and headed off to Corpus, where we rehearsed a bit, and were shown round the college. The students that showed us round provided a great opportunity to ask questions about what lots of us will soon be facing (college applications) and they really gave us a realistic idea of what applying to, and going to university was actually like, which for many of us, myself included, was very different to what we had originally imagined. During the tour, it was rather strange to be told that we were standing facing the building in which DNA was discovered, whilst the first edition of Newton’s Principia and real signatures of Henry VIII were held in their library 100 metres away. The separate tour of the Parker Library left quite a few of us, teachers included, utterly stunned to the point that convinced Mrs Macleod to purchase one of every single postcard on the souvenir stall, which certainly would have got us a good guest reputation! The guide seemed to enjoy handing round books and extracts, and then casually telling us that we ‘may want to be careful as they are worth a quarter of a million pounds’, at which point I saw some extremely worried facial expressions on Miss Irwin’s and Mrs Macleod’s faces, almost as if we weren’t the most trustworthy group of pupils to be handling books like that. Every book he showed us was more significant and famous, until we really were thrown in the deep end with the oldest edition of the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, made in 1013AD. Roughly a quarter of the most eminent books in British history are held in the Parker Library; the entire College’s history really is astounding and I felt extremely privileged to be there. The welcoming attitude of the College made the experience even better. Now, getting onto the actual reason for the trip, we sang through our pieces with the members of the College choir and their conductor, ironing out all the small details that would make the Sawston pupils at Corpus Christi performance great, and after that we headed upstairs to dinner. We sat in the hall at the same time as all the students, which was a tiny bit intimidating, and filled ourselves up on Thai green curry to ready ourselves for the big sing. Evensong began at 6.45 pm, and all those long after-school rehearsals finally came together to create a sound that I can comfortably say blew everyone away. The acoustics in the chapel, the addition of the organ majestically pounding out an accompaniment, and of course the brilliant Corpus choir itself all helped to give it that edge, but in the end I think it was our great attitude after such a wonderful day that made it by far our best sing of Herbert Howells’ brilliant and acclaimed Magnificat and Nunc Dimitis. Kate Rainsford, Year 10 Pupil Visit to Bletchley Park Over 50 Sawston Village College Year 11 codebreakers visited Bletchley Park for an educational visit including: using a ‘real’ enigma machine, a guided tour of the important historical site, breaking different types of codes and time to reflect and explore the historical, mathematical and computing elements of Bletchley Park. Pupils also learned about a key figure in the new house system, Alan Turing , and were able to contextualise the vital role he and the teams at Bletchley Park played in the war effort. Mr Tanner, Head of Mathematics Engaged Evensong at Corpus Christi 27 28 Sawston Village College Engaged Chess Club On 25 June the Chess Club had its annual games evening to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the UK Chess Challenge. The families of a number of our players joined us to play a variety of games, including four-way chess. Classics GCSE Day Sawston has been playing chess for many years and first joined the UK Chess Challenge in 2002. Members have participated every year since, playing between Christmas and Easter for prizes and the opportunity to progress to county and national competitions. 20 Year 10 and 11 pupils spent a day at the Classics Faculty in Cambridge University. On 26 September, Sawston’s ancient historians considered how the Classical world of Greece and Rome still resonates in the western world in our own day. They attended workshops led by academics about a variety of subjects including the study of epics, learning the ancient Greek language, and Athenian drama. In one session about Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, pupils considered how these ancient texts have influenced our own society’s view of heroism by considering the brave but flawed ancient figures of Achilles and Odysseus. A pleasant evening was enjoyed by all, and £10 was donated to ‘Chess for Africa’, which the UK Challenge was sponsoring this year. Mrs Sheridan Others attended a session about the way in which women were presented in the ancient world, in particular the last Egyptian pharaoh, Cleopatra, Agrippina (mother of the emperor Nero), and the assertive Greek role model, Antigone. The day was designed to encourage pupils to continue their study of the Classical world at sixth form and university. Learning all about the ingredients required to create an opera, pupils were then involved in a fast-moving version of Carmen, acting out the roles enthusiastically while supported by the professional performers. The visit was part of the wider SingFest project involving all of Sawston’s feeder primary schools. Babraham Institute Ethics Event 15 Year 10 pupils attended the Babraham Institute Ethics Event on 17 November. They listened to lots of interesting presentations and took part in discussions on the use of animals in research. The event broadened their knowledge of the Institute's research and encouraged pupils to think about the wider social and ethical implications of scientific discoveries. Following the customary early start, the group travelled by a combination of coach and ferry to the Belgian town of Ypres, where we visited the ‘In Flanders Fields’ Museum prior to sampling the culinary delights of Belgian waffles and chocolate. The evening was spent ten-pin bowling, where Harry Hood was presented with a bowling pin, signed by all members of the trip, in acknowledgement of his top score performance. Accommodation, as for the trip in 2014, was provided at the Oude Abdij (Old Abbey) hotel in the small Belgian town of Lo, situated approximately half-way between Ypres and the Belgian coast. Friday’s itinerary commenced with a visit to Hill 62, which Matthias Barrett was proud to discover is now a memorial to the sacrifice made by Canadian forces who successfully assaulted and held this strategically important ridge in 1917. Co-located, is the trench system preserved within Sanctuary Wood, where the pupils took full advantage of the opportunity to explore the trenches and tunnels that remain largely as the soldiers left them following the Armistice of November 1918. Pupils then visited the Tyne Cot Cemetery the largest Commonwealth War Cemetery containing nearly 12,000 individual graves and a memorial wall to over 35,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient after 16 August 1917 for whom there is no known grave – prior to visiting the German cemetery of Langemarck, where we were honoured to attend the reburial service for 44 German soldiers whose bodies were recovered recently from the Flanders fields. In the evening, we attended one of the traditional highlights of the trip, the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres. This ceremony, held at precisely 8.00 pm each evening, provided pupils the opportunity to pay their own respects to the fallen of WWI and a wreath was laid during the ceremony on behalf of Sawston Village College by Matthew Carter and Emily Pluck. On the final day we travelled to the Somme area of France, stopping at two cemeteries on the way, which enabled Harry Will and Samuel Arnold to pay their respects at the graves of family members who were killed during the fighting of WWI. At the Somme we visited Newfoundland Park - commemorating the sacrifice of the Newfoundland Regiment - the Thiepval Memorial, which is the largest memorial in the World commemorating British soldiers killed in conflict, and the Lochnagar Crater at La Boiselle, preserved in commemoration of the combatants from all countries killed in the battle for this location. On completion, we headed for home, returning to Sawston at 11.00 pm on Saturday, exhausted but having enjoyed a highly thought-provoking trip. Mr Reed, History Teacher During our history trip to Belgium we visited the Menin Gate in Ypres, a memorial for the 55,000 fallen soldiers that do not have a known grave. During the Last Post ceremony, Matt and I had the honour of laying the remembrance wreath on behalf of Sawston Village College. Emily Pluck, Year 10 Pupil I have always known that hundreds of thousands of soldiers died fighting. However, when you see over 10,000 graves in front of you, each telling a different story, that made a big impact on me. Matthew Carter, Year 10 Pupil Sawston Village College Year 11 pupils returned to the College for their Leavers’ Ball and were formally welcomed by Mr Culpin and Mrs Bucklow. They arrived in a cavalcade of interesting vehicles, watched by the many people who had turned out to see them make their entrances. Local web solutions ...
