The Barl of Sandwich

TheBarl of Sandwich
An earl is a British peer, or nobleman. When John Montague's greatgrandfather was made a peer by the
king, he decided to honor the town of
Sandv'ic'h,England, by making it
part of his title. He almost chose the
tov,n of Portsmouth; if he had, perhaps u'e'd all be eating "grilled
cheeseportsntouths" today!
hat could be more traditional than a sandwich
madewith leftover
Thanksgivingturkey?Before
you take a bite, though,take a
minute to say a big thanksto the
inventor of the sandwich,John
Montague,whosebirthday we
celebrateon November3.
Montague,the fourth Earl of
Sandwich,is said to have
inventedthe sandwichrn 1762
when he ordereda servantto
bring him "some meat between

two slicesof bread."Rumor
has it that he was involved in
a card tournamentat the time
and didn't want to leave the
table! Before long, others were
askingfor a "Sandwich," and
from there, the name stuck.
For almost250 years,
Americanshave enjoyedsandwiches.And there'sno wrong
way to make one-there are as
many kinds of sandwichesas
you can dream up. You can start
with two slicesof over 1,000
kinds of bread,from "A"
(anadama,a bread made from
commeal,molasses,and wheat)
to "Z" (zucchinibread, anyone?).So the next time you sit
down for a snackor lunch, you
can think of the Earl of
Sandwich.And remember,your
sandwichfillings are limited
only by your imagination!
