The Provider’s Corner
Centers for
Disease Control
and Prevention
(CDC) have
partnered with
the American
Academy of
Sleep Medicine
(AASM) and the
Sleep Research
Society to create
the National
Healthy Sleep
Awareness
Project. The project is being developed
to reduce the staggering national
burden of poor sleep health and sleep
illness. Per the CDC insufficient sleep
is associated with a number of chronic
conditions: diabetes, cardiovascular
disease, obesity, and depression which
all threaten our nation’s health. Sleep
is one of the pillars of healthy lifestyle,
directly impacting every aspect of
health and well-being.
In this issue
To our patients, their families, and
partners, we are committed to
uphold the following values:
• Service that is unparalleled
• Listening and creating
individualized treatment
• Excellence in quality,
professional care
• Efficient and welcoming, with
easy access
• Patient-centered, innovative
& compassionate care
Eastern Iowa Sleep Center
The new partnership with the CDC
will amplify this message. Tactics will
include widespread public awareness
campaign, health care provider education and improved sleep health data
collection. The objective is to increase
medical evaluation of people with
symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea
in order to reduce vehicular crashes
due to drowsy driving and ensuring
more Americans get sufficient sleep
for overall improved health.

Hot Topic:
Microsleep
Microsleep is when extreme drowsiness
causes an episode of light sleep lasting
5 to 30 seconds. Several regions of the
brain go to sleep involuntarily while
areas controlling vision remain active.
Microsleep episodes can happen
anywhere. People who are likely to
experience them:
Just four years after opening the doors to
a brand new facility, volumes continue to
•Commercial drivers
increase. Contributing factors include the
•Shift workers (work the night shift or
improvement in their emergency departlong shifts)
ment and other ancillary departments that
•Drivers with untreated sleep disorders experienced growth by 10-35 percent.
such as sleep apnea
Growth was experience by EISC by a 24%
•Drivers who use sedating medications increase in sleep studies compared to 2012.
•Drivers who are sleep deprived
(inadequate sleep)
Drowsy driving warning signs:
Fixed gaze or the eyelids start to droop,
complete failure to respond and head
nodding are signs that there is a loss
of contact with reality – microsleep.
People often wake suddenly with a
sharp jerk of the head. The brain does
not remember such short naps. Sleep
has to last
beyond a
minute or
two for the
brain to
remember it.
With microsleep you are
left with a
feeling of not
knowing if
you are coming or going.
It is caused by fatigue. If the episodes
are not tackled they can become more
frequent.
