Tsunami Trouble December 2008 Green/ Blue Class page 1 This is a picture of La Plama off of the Canary Islands. Half a century ago (1950) a volcanic eruption shook off an enormous chunk of the island off. page 2 People said that geologists warn people that when the chunk officially breaks off it will trigger a wave. that wave will ram into Africa, and the east coast of North America. Scientists don't know when it will happen. page 3 The waves have struck before, like in 1958, Howard Ulrich and his eight- year old son named Sonny, went out boating in Lituya, Alaska. As they were boating , they saw a big pile of water, and then it all fell on them. page 4 Later, scientists determined that massive landslide wave was estimated to be 524 meters (1,720 feet) high-tall. After that, scientists think that the landslides cause the tsunami's attacks. They also say that underwater earthquakes cause most tsunamis, which usually reach about 10 meters (33 feet) in height. The Lituya Bay was 50 times taller! scientists now call those Mega-Tsunamis. page 5 Scientists have found geological evidence of island collapses in the past and determined that mega- tsunamis caused by landslides that have occurred throughout the Earth's history. The biggest known incident happened about 2 million years ago. A chunk an island in Hawaii collapsed to the sea floor. That chunk was 10 times the size of Mount Everest! Article write-up The article opens up by introducing La Palma, a part of the canary islands. An enormous chunk of the island crumbled loose after a volcanic eruption that occurred over a half a century ago. People say that on a random day the chunk will officially break off and caused a major tsunami. That tsunami will ram into Africa, eastern North America, and the canaries. The colossal waves have struck before , like in 1958 when a man named Howard Ulrich went boating in Lituya, Alaska. When he was fishing he heard a really big rumbling sound. He looked up and he saw a big pile of water right about to crash down on him. People say landforms cause tsunami's. A Tsunami is a large ocean wave that causes disasters when they crash. Most Tsunami's are often caused by underwater earthquakes. Who knows when we will get hit by the Tsunami.
