Louis Braille
” …to open the eyes of the blind.”
Isaiah 42:7
Louis Braille was born January 4, 1809, in Coupvray, France. An
injury to his eye at age three resulted in total loss of vision. When
he was ten, he entered the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris,
the world’s first school for blind children. There he would live,
study, and later teach.
When Louis was fifteen, he developed an ingenious system of
reading and writing by means of raised dots. Two years later he
adapted his method to musical notation.
Mr. Braille accepted a full-time teaching position at the Institute
when he was nineteen. He was a kind, compassionate teacher and
an accomplished musician. He gave his life in selfless service to his
pupils, to his friends, and to the perfection of his raised dot
method, which is known today as Braille.
Louis Braille died at age forty-three, confident that his mission on
earth was completed.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American clergyman, activist, and
prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is
best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using
nonviolent civil disobedience. King has become a national icon in the
history of modern American liberalism.
A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his
career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found
the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957,
serving as its first president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on
Washington, where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. On
October 14 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating
racial inequality through nonviolence.
King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He
was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in
1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr.
Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986. Hundreds of
streets in the U.S. and beyond have been renamed in his honor.
