HISTORY
While Arron visited me at
Arizona State University, we
decided we wanted to do
something
different
with
our lives.
We wanted to
try to create something on
our own; we wanted to be
entrepreneurs. We were 18
years old and we didn’t have
much experience or assets,
but we had a lot of passion. We
kicked around a lot of ideas,
and we landed on the idea of
smoothies. The plan was to
build a mobile smoothie unit
and operate it in the summers.
In 2004, we opened up a
new restaurant in Thief River
Falls, MN. It was called Café
Rhombus and was a definite
learning experience.
We
ventured out from doing just
pizza to doing everything. This
turned out to not be the best
idea. It is very hard to be good
at everything, and we weren’t.
We credit this store for making
us the businessmen we are
today. After ups and downs
in Thief River, we decided to
open up another strictly pizza
joint.
We were gifted an old
snowmobile trailer, and we
went to work on it. As we
erected the frame, Arron
noticed
that
something
was off. The frame was not
square at all; it was tilted like a
rhombus. Our name was born.
We called our mobile stand
the Smoothie Rhombus, and
people started calling us the
Rhombus Guys.
We hauled that stand around
for the next two summers
and had a lot of fun. We
also learned a lot of business
lessons. . .usually the hard way.
Along the way, we decided it
would be smart to add a food
product to our business. Pizza
was not our first choice. The
first food we sold, or tried to,
were hot dogs. Needless to
say we ate a lot of hot dogs
and decided we needed to
come up with something else.
This is where pizza enters the
story.
In the spring of 2007, we
opened up Rhombus Guys in
Grand Forks, ND. We got back
to doing what we do best,
pizza! We ended up closing
Café Rhombus in 2008, and it
was one of the hardest things
we have ever done. But Grand
Forks was really taking off and
we needed to expand. We
expanded our location in 2009.
Our pizzas started winning
competitions and we were
being featured in multiple
publications.
In the summer of 2002, we
opened up Rhombus House
of Pizza in Mentor, MN.
Unbelievably, it is still open
today. We had no idea what
we were doing when we first
started making pizza. In fact,
Arron had never made a pizza
in his life. We worked hard and
people were very supportive
of us. Meaning they forgave
us for our crappy pizza and
many mistakes early on. We
were determined and got A
LOT better.
Late in the summer of 2011 we
opened up another Rhombus
Guys location in Fargo, ND.
We have been named the best
pizza in Fargo every year since.
The location has been a great
addition, and we couldn’t be
prouder for all that it has been
able to accomplish. We are
located in a cool, old building
downtown.
Arron and I cannot say Thank
You enough to all of our
customers, staff, and family.
We feel blessed to be given
the opportunity to do what
we love, and to do it in such
amazing communities. This
pretty much brings us up to
date with our journey, but we
plan to continue to innovate
and grow. Where we go next
