¡Bienvenidos a la clase de Español II! (Honors) Señor Carnevali Aula: 130 Ext. de teléfono: x5130 Email: [email protected] 2014-15 Plan del curso Course Rationale: Información básica del curso . . . In this course, we will continue developing communication skills that will help you communicate in realworld contexts outside of the four walls of this classroom. We will also be focusing on aspects of Spanish culture and its similarities/differences to your own culture. The goal of this Honor’s course is to help you enhance your proficiency with the Spanish language, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Since Spanish 1 was designed to help you build a strong foundation with such skills, this course will now build upon that foundation and push you towards the next level of proficiency! Required Materials for EACH class period: “Las necesidades de la clase” 1. A writing utensil- pencil and/or pen for each class period (I charge “Panteras” for my pencils!) 2. Paper for each class period in you binder (see below) 3. A large 3 ring binder to store and organize handouts and class materials • Please bring these materials to class daily. You do not need to bring a textbook to class. 4. A wallet or any other object to store, organize, and maintain your classroom “money.” Communicative Goals and Focus: Creating profiles for Spanish social media websites; Interviewing native speakers about their typical routines in Spain; Interpreting popular Spanish music, magazines, newspapers, legends/myths, and videos; Considering cultural responsibility in the household (i.e. chores); Comparing your typical school day to that of a Spanish student; Discuss and contemplate aspects of living a healthy life; Comparing/contrasting views of health between various cultures; and many other familiar topics . . . Grading & Tests: Examenes y otras actividades de puntos (calificación) 1. Participation– You will receive a participation grade using the Survivor game. 2. Speaking Activities & Group Work – If you are absent during these activities (and they can’t be made up), you will be exempt from that grade for that day. It won’t hurt or help your grade. 3. Formative assessments – meaningful homework and quizzes to help you prepare for larger tests 4. Summative assessments – larger tests focusing on multiple concepts from the unit 5. Project-based assessments – individual and group projects **For some assessments that you will hand in, you will receive a rubric beforehand. You are expected to refer to this rubric as a guide while completing that assessment. When handing in the assignment, you must hand in that rubric so that I can use it to grade you. If you lose it and I have to print another one, I will deduct 10% from your grade on that assignment. ** Classroom Procedures: Rutina típica de la clase 1. Sobrevivientes: Starting the first week of school, we will all be playing a game called “Sobrevivientes.” We will discuss this in greater detail to see what it entails and what you must do in order to not be eliminated. As soon as you enter my classroom, you are expected to speak only Spanish. 2. Absences: If you are absent, you are responsible for all work that you miss. Please check with a classmate or with me before class. You will have the number of excused days that you missed to hand in any make up work or assignments. If you’re absent during a test, the same number of excused days applies. 3. Late Work: Ten percent will be deducted daily from any work that is considered to be late. 4. Graded assignments: I will grade and return assignments as quickly as possible. Grades will be updated online via the school’s grading system. Since you have access to this grade book online, please do not ask me to tell you your grade. You are responsible for checking your own grades. 5. Classroom rewards: All possible rewards for my class are available in “Sobrevivientes.” You will have the choice to “purchase” extra credit, exemptions from quizzes/test, class parties, and other incentives. Classroom Rules: Students who do not follow these rules will be subject to: 1) verbal reprimand 2) call/email home to parents, 3) a referral to the office, 4) after school detention, and so forth. 1. Cell-phones & Other Technology: Use of any technological devices during the class period is not permitted. If I see any device in use (texting, games, headphones in ears, “seflies”, etc.), you will be “fined” from Sobrevivientes, the device will be taken, and it will be handed to the office. The best choice is to leave these items in your pocket or your locker before entering my classroom. NO EXCEPTIONS! If it is a recurring problem, every student will place all technology in a box or some other organizer upon entering the classroom. 2. Sobrevivientes: Every student will abide by the rules set forth in Sobrevivientes (explained separately). 3. Class schedule: Class begins and ends when the bell rings. Be prepared- pencils sharpened, notebooks opened, homework out, etc. before class begins. Don’t line up at the door or make noise putting your materials away while class is still going on. 4. Cleanliness & Organization: When leaving, make sure your area where you are sitting is neat and clean. You will not be permitted to leave the classroom until you clean up any mess you made. 5. Substitutes: During a substitute visit, respect and follow the directions of the teacher. S/he is in charge, and all classroom policies/procedures apply. Any negative report on a student’s behavior will be handled appropriately, and you will be “fined” from Sobrevivientes. Any work required of you during a substitute visit is important and will count towards your grade. No excuses. 6. Cheating: Cheating is defined as NOT doing your OWN work; that is, copying from a test, copying homework or classwork assignments, etc. This also involves technology in translator use – i.e. Google Translate. If you are caught cheating, you will receive a “0” on that assignment without the possibility of a retake. You will also be referred to the office according to the student handbook. 7. Late work: All work is due on the date that is designated. I will not accept excuses for technological issues, such as printer problems, no ink, no printer paper, lost thumb-drive, forgot at home, etc. When a project/assignment is due, you are to have it ready to turn it at the beginning of class. Do not come into class expecting to have time to finish working on it (i.e. printing things that day in class). I hope that you enjoy my class and take advantage of the unique opportunity to communicate in Spanish on a daily basis. I have high expectations of everyone in this class. With your cooperation, effort, dedication, and participation, everyone can and will have success with the Spanish language. I look forward to getting to know you and helping you progress with the Spanish language this year!! -Señor Carnevali ************************************************************************************** I acknowledge that I have read, understand, and will abide by the information on the Spanish 1 syllabus.
