Plans are underway for our Madonna Parish Picnic to be held on the great lawn on Sunday,

Since this is a parish event, we are reaching out to our parishioners, to volunteer to help make
this Picnic a huge success. Anyone interested in helping to make this Picnic a huge success is asked to contact the

Spirituality
20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 16, 2015
First Reading: Proverbs 9:1-6
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 34:2-3,45, 6-7
Second Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20
Gospel: John 6:51-58
Wisdom is personified in the Old
Testament world as a woman. Alongside Folly, also depicted as a woman,
Wisdom invites people to join her in a
banquet. She extends her invita on to
join her in her house, one with “seven
columns” (v.1), an image implying
greatness. Her invita on is extended
to those who are “naïve…(or) lack
sense” (v.4) that they might learn from
her and benefit. To dwell in her house
is to “advance in the way of understanding” (v.6). And so hers is an invita on worth considering. To choose
Wisdom over Folly is to choose the
way of God and the way of life.
In John’s gospel today we con nue to hear Jesus’ Bread of Life Discourse. Jesus declares himself to be
“the living bread that came down from
heaven” which is “my flesh for the life
of the world” (v.51). Whereas the
manna in the wilderness was only for
the Israelites, Jesus’ gi will nourish
the whole world. But the crowd does
not understand Jesus and asks, “How
can this man give us (his) flesh to
eat?” (v.52). Again John’s audience
knows that this bread is a reference to
the Eucharist, which is a sharing in the
body and blood of Christ. As Jesus has
“life because of the Father” (v.57), so
whoever “feeds on me will have life
because of me” (v.57). Our union with
Christ unites us also to the Father.
The le er to the Ephesians con nues to call us to live lives worthy of our
bap sm, “not as foolish persons but as
wise” (v.15). “The days are evil” (v.16),
Blessing Religious ArƟcles
by Paul Turner
Many Catholics like to use religious ar cles
Medals, crucifixes, statues, pictures, scapulars, rosaries
and other items made from common elements may be
set aside for religious use. They are usually obtained from
dealers of church goods, but they may also be fashioned
at home by hand. Some religious ar cles are hung on the
wall at home, at school or at work. Others are worn beneath or on top of clothing. It is customary for such ar cles to be blessed by a deacon or a priest.
Religious ar cles can be a means of evangeliza on.
They depict a symbol of the faith that Catholics hold.
They prompt discussion about biblical figures and events,
as well as the holy people who have kept the faith
throughout history. Many Catholics carry religious ar cles
with them as a reminder of God’s presence or to seek
divine protec on. A blessing sets the ar cles apart for
our author warns us. So we must
strive to live as God calls us to live,
“filled with the Spirit” (v.18). As Chrisans our lives ought to be in conformity with God’s will.
For ReflecƟon: Do I believe that
the Eucharist is intended “for the life
of the world”? Do I seek to dwell in
the house of Wisdom?

this sacred purpose.
The blessing of religious ar cles may take place during
liturgical prayer. People bring ar cles with them to
church, where the celebrant introduces the service. A
Scripture reading is proclaimed. For example, in Paul’s
Second Le er to the Corinthians, he says, “All of us, gazing with unveiled face on the glory of the Lord, are being
transformed into the same image from glory to glory, as
from the Lord who is the Spirit” (cf. 3:17b-4:2). Intercessions are made, and the celebrant concludes with a blessing over the objects and the people.
Alterna vely, the priest or deacon may say a very short
formula apart from a liturgical service: “May this (name
of arƟcle) and the one who uses it be blessed, in the
name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy
Spirit.”

A Note from the Pastor
Praised be Jesus Christ!
It came to my a en on that some people were complaining about the size of the bulle n. Last week we published
an eight page bulle n, two more than our “new usual” and three more than when I arrived. The addi on of two new
columns necessitated enlarging our bulle n to six pages, but last week’s eight page edi on was an excep on. Hopefully
many of you are finding these columns beneficial. The first column is a reflec on on the weekly scripture readings and
is intended to give you something to take home and reflect upon during the coming week. I have been wri ng this column for nearly ten years for Ministry & Liturgy magazine, a na onal publica on. In Isaiah God tells the prophet that His
word “shall not return to me empty” (55:11). By reflec ng on God’s word we allow it to take root in our lives and bear
fruit. This column, “Lec onary Spirituality” is featured in church bulle ns throughout the country and I hope you find it
beneficial as well.
The second column, by Fr. Paul Turner, addresses various topics of interest to people. It is published with the intent
of being a “bulle n insert” and is also subscribed to by many parishes in our country. Addi onally, last week we had
much informa on to convey to you and so we found ourselves in need of the addi onal space. Our bulle n company
was willing to accommodate us and our adver sers are picking up the bill. Please thank them when you visit their places of business. They help us spread the word and the Word.
Next Saturday we will be holding a “Spruce Up the Parish” day. We have already gathered a list of volunteers but
there’s always room for more. We intend to address a number of areas on the parish property including the fences
surrounding the rectory and the school and the cafeteria and kitchen. Addi onally we are planning on adding some
plants to the islands in the parking lot and to the area facing the church. Along with volunteers we would also be grateful for financial angels who would be willing to underwrite some of this work. Please contact Joseph Arcilla, our Music
Director or Marvin Espinal, our Maintenance Supervisor, by calling the church office.
Finally, I’d like to introduce you to a new member of our parish staff, Donna Cole. Donna is coming on staff as a partme Pastoral Associate. I will let her introduce herself to you below. Please welcome her with the same warmth and
enthusiasm that you welcomed me. She will be a very valuable asset to our community of faith.
In the Lord’s Love… Fr Bruce
A Note from Donna Cole, MPM
Gree ngs good people of the Church of the Madonna! It is with great joy that I begin to share in your community
journey of faith. My name is Donna Cole and I was recruited by Fr. Bruce to work with and for you as a Pastoral Associate. My ministry will encompass broad areas of administra on, spiritual life and worship, faith forma on and a variety
of pastoral services to all members of the Madonna community. I come to you with an eclec c background including
30 years in parish ministry, 13 years edi ng the publica on Ministry & Liturgy, a Master’s in Pastoral Ministry (as well
as a BA in Microbiology and an MS in Biology). Along with a variety of ar cles and columns, I have published 2 books:
Liturgical Ministry: A PracƟcal Guide to Spirituality (available as an e-book) and Last-Minute Liturgies: CreaƟng Prayerful Responses to the Unexpected. I am recently re red a er 27 years as a research scien st at Rutgers: New Jersey
Medical School. I am an occasional Lecturer in Theology at Caldwell University where I most recently taught Chris an
Bioethics. I am a member of Theta Alpha Kappa, the Na onal Theological Honor Society and I try hard to keep up with
current thinking in the Church! I am also on the Na onal Staff of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and am responsible for
Con ngency Planning; I am devoted to Emergency Preparedness in every area of life.
I am en rely commi ed to the Church in every dimension. 18 years ago I professed vows of chas ty and obedience
as a Consecrated Virgin (in accordance with canon 604). My iden ty as a consecrated person gives me great joy and
great freedom in serving God’s people and I look forward to sharing all of that with the parish community. My greatest
passion is for the liturgy, and I will be working with the development of a pastoral team for liturgical prepara on, ongoing forma on and enrichment of liturgical ministers, the Bethany team forma on and adult programs on liturgy and
the sacraments. In addi on, I will be working with parish safety programs to improve our level of preparedness and to
develop plans for outreach in the event of disaster. I look forward to learning new names and discovering new gi edness as we journey on together. Thanks to all who have already welcomed me so warmly.
Blessings on all!
Donna Cole
